I thought I'd do my first health update of 2019 which is mainly about my IBS today! I finally got the appointment I'd been waiting MONTHS for, but it wasn't what I'd been hoping for...

Becky I’m in a very similar situation except I’ve literally just went to my GP for help. He was equally as dismissive, I have had ibs for 10yrs, and this is only my second time trying to get help. This one has said he’s testing me for ibs??? What? I talked about Fodmaps and he had no interest whatsoever I told him I was gluten intolerant I know my own body I know some of my triggers and would like to see a specialist, so he’s giving me blood tests to see if I am coeliac, I said I’m not I’m just gluten intolerant and need someone to help me with Fodmaps. He just wanted me out of the surgery and looked at me as if I’d lost the plot! I believe the only thing to do is go privately. I said to a friend it’s a lot of money and her answer was what’s more important, health or money? Bottom line is no one in the UK at least the gps have any understanding of ibs and Fodmaps. 😢

Monika Thank you for your reply. I have done the Elimination process and re introduction of foods that’s why I would like professional help from a dietician who works specifically with Fodmaps. I do not believe it’s connected to my mental health I am a bible believing Christian and my mental health is in excellent condition, and my hope is in the Lord, I don’t believe in holistic therapies. I appreciate your advice and you mist do what you believe to be true, thank you. God bless.

Hi Becky, it’s always sad to hear when you don’t feel like you’re being taken seriously, especially when IBS is having such a big impact on your life 😔!!! You’ve probably already tried these, but I’ve suffered with painful bloating and nausea (especially at night) for a few years now and have recently discovered Charcoal capsules...I’ve been taking them on and off for a few months now and I’ve never had such relief...I still get bloated after eating occasionally but it’s nowhere near as bad! Hope you find something that helps you soon! xxx

Hi Becky, Here’s some things I do - Turmeric, Ginger for nausea, peppermint or chamomile for bloating, chia seeds and flax seeds in the morning to keep things “regular” Drink water with lemon (lemon is an alkaline which neutralises acid in body and helps with GERD symptoms Another thing I’d advise - magnesium And then - the pain you’re experiencing might be what specialists call “neuropathic pain” which basically means when the nerve fibres are slightly damaged due to a condition, like IBS as a lot of people have what they call a “spastic” colon with IBS, and that can mess up nerve fibres which then causes your autonomic system to be hypersensitive and send a lot of pain signals - medications which could potentially help this are - Amitriptyline (you’re given a low dose of 10mg) and although it’s an “anti depressant” the dosage you’d be given wouldn’t be for depression and it’s got many other benefits like helping neuropathic pain Another thing I’ve been using recently is what they call a TENS machine recommended by NHS. Research it if you’d like And then other good things to try - cinnamon, cumin, slippery elm bark, liquorice root, charcoal tablets and even perhaps CBD oil for the pain you’re experiencing Another good herb is - Ashwagandha I think these things are worth a go.. I do believe SIBO testing might help as if people have bacteria overgrowth it can be rectified by specific antibiotics to break down the bad bacteria Other things to consider - dairy free, gluten free & grain free for a while, whilst you put your body in a restorative mode and a reset Then another good thing is getting fresh organic foods if possible and kefir Other good things to do - try to avoid meat or processed foods as takes longer to digest Another thing I’d suggest you do is actually go for a gynaecology examination (this might seem random for bowel related issues) but you’ll be surprised that a lot of gynaecology issues can be misdiagnosed as IBS so might be worth looking into this Also, a good thing to do is perhaps try and find a hormonal specialist. If your hormones are out of whack then your neuro-transmitters will be and it can cause problems with the gut so a possible avenue to look into All these things haven’t helped me massively in resolving the bowel issues but they have made a difference so might be worth giving it a go - it’s always good to do everything you can xx

We just want them to listen and not make us feel weird or stupid when we're trying to explain our symptoms to them. I just wish you find the right person and/or treatment that really helps you. Don't lose hope. Wishing you all the best, sending good vibes from Germany! xx

Hey Becky, I've seen all my specialists and doctors privately in the UK, US, and NZ and all my gastros have been completely stumped by why my digestive system is so messed up. And on top of that I have had a lot of other symptoms, not just pertaining to my bowel and so I have been seeing specialists in aaaaall the alleys. Gastroenterologists, rheumatologists, gynocologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, cardiologists, ear nose and throat doctors, and a dietitian, even chinese doctors. I've done nerve conduction studies, biofeedback, breathing therapy, a colonoscopy, gastroscopies, laproscopies, ultrasounds, mris, xrays, colonic transit tests, heart event trackers, hydrogen breath tests, a million labtests, a thousand different laxatives, heartburn meds, anti-nausea pills, I have done the works. And everytime theres something a little wrong with my test results but not enough to be conclusive. My body is an elusive mystery and everyone seems to agree. I've had kind doctors and rude doctors and everything in between. Yet I still have no answers. I would say if you're going to go privately maybe try do some research to find the best doctors. I've seen 3 gastros in NZ and one in London and we are still workin on it. I know its so frustrating and it makes you feel so helpless, frustrated and hopeless as time wears on but hey we are troopers and we have to keep going. These days I am doing my own research and being much more assertive with my doctors and trying to not feel bad when I tell them whats happening is not enough. I'm here to talk if you ever need, and i can tell you more about my experiences but just remember to be kind and empathetic to yourself and other than that we just have to keep at it i guess. I really hope you find answers soon!

I'm going to ask about gallbladder and bowel endometriosis, just to cover all my bases. I just don't want to be in pain anymore 😭 I don't love the healthcare system here in the US, but the benefit is I don't have to wait super long for testing if I need it. So thankful for your channel❤

I'm really sorry to hear this Becky! I actually just had the same experience. I waited for over a month for an appointment with a Gastroentelerologist here in Germany where I'm studying. He didn't even let me speak for more than 5 minutes about my symptoms and he told me I had to get tested for food intolerances, sending me home with the test substances and saying if I found something, I should make another appointment and come back. I felt horrible! I told them if I had to take the tests at home then I would need a doctor's certificate for my university (because it takes a couple of days), and they told me to just take the tests on the weekend. I said I was already feeling very sick and didn't know if the tests might make it worse. They didn't care and sent me home. It was so demotivating, sad, and exhausting for me. I also don't really know what to do anymore.

Hey! I totally feel you! Here in Costa Rica is even harder to find someone who knows or even things to eat. Have you ever consider a psychologist? I am one so I know it works and I am visiting one and ir really has helps coping with the frustration and all the bad feelings that IBS can make us have specially when is a crisis. My therapist has really been a nice support because I was getting depressed specially at the begining

Have you ever seen a naturopath? I had the exact same experience with 4 different GI doctors and finally gave up on conventional medicine when it comes to my IBS. I've been seeing a naturopath and a registered dietician specially trained in digestive disorders and it's been SO helpful. My symptoms still flare up, but I'm about 3 months into the ND/dietician route and it's already helped me leaps and bounds more than 5 years of GI appointments ever did. I know how awful and frustrating IBS can be - sending you healing thoughts and wishing you the best!

IBS is frustrating I completely sympathise with you. IBS doesn’t have a cure it’s just something we live with he is right, but he could have been more sympathetic. A Gastroenterologist really only specialises in inflammatory bowel disease mainly and ruling that out. Have you heard of professor Peter Whorwell? he is a top IBS specialist in the UK. might be worth trying to see him. Have you tried hypnosis? Buscopan injections? Those are what Peter Whorwell recomments, maybe something like motillium to help things move better.

I am so sorry you have go through this. My IBS took a very turn for the worse over the holidays - very constipated and I couldn't get it going with no matter how much clean eating and water and fiber, etc I took and I actually found help in the most unlikely of places. My massage therapist is going to school for osteopathy (not sure if it is called the same in the UK) and was learning a bunch of stuff for the visceral/gut area and asked if she could practice some general listening, nerve and fascia releases on me because she knew I have a bad gut. She immediately felt that I was blocked up and did some nerve releases and now all things are moving along wonderfully. Never in a million years did I think releasing nerves and the connective tissue would be the thing to help me. I am just throwing this out there because perhaps what the nerves do when they sense you have eaten something is also malfunctioning and maybe some tight thing is pulling on that thing when you eat which is irritating some other thing which causes the brain to improperly handle the whole situation. This might not help at all but I was so amazed at what she was able to do and accomplish and how I never heard about this before and I wish I would have gotten this kind of help earlier because it might have prevents a whole lot. My other thought is that why didn't the doctor ask questions about SIBO and perhaps other parasites? I hope you do find some one private or non private that can really sit down and go through all the possibilities to why digestion problems may be occuring

OK Becky....I am so triggered. I'm not a Doctor. I have the same symptoms as you...down to the constipation IBS-C and a more recent change. What you have is Visceral Hypersensitivity. It is a part of IBS, but not everyone with IBS has it. I cannot find a lot about it online. I was diagnosed with it in October. Since then, I have got my life back for the most part. Yes, I still have IBS. To start with, I was terrified of food. All food hurt...not just the fodmaps. Any type of fibre. The reason for this is, in visceral hypersensitivity there is a communication problem between your gut and the brain. It is not fully understood, but it means that NORMAL digestion is interpreted as something wrong. The nerves in your gut go crazy sending signals to the brain and inducing a pain response. But, don't take my word for it. I can recommend the gasteroenterologist who diagnosed this for me and it would probably be a couple of hours drive for you to see him. You could get an appointment within a couple of weeks privately. I'm not sure that all gasteroenterologists understand this symptom. It is treated with low level anti-depressants which block the signals. I take 25mg of nortriptyline. It allows me to function with those pain symptoms reduced to a point to where I know they are there sometimes but they are really mild now. I don't get any side effects from the nortriptyline because it is such a low dose (psychiatric dosage is 100mg to 150mg). I also am not against taking anti-depressants because I have suffered depression in the past and took fluoxetine for a total of 7 years. Some people seem to think that being prescribed anti-depressants means that these symptoms are 'all in their head' or something. But they don't understand the biochemical response of pain or chemistry. Your body IS producing a pain response when it shouldn't be. The pain is NOT imagined. Please find a gasteroenterolgist that understands this. I can recommend Dr Hanson at the BMI Ridgeway near Swindon. Look at the website and phone the hospital if you want to try this. Privately, you will get an appointment within a few weeks and it will cost no more than £220 for initial consultation and £150 for the follow up. For me, he has written to my GP and I am on repeat prescriptions for a year. There is really no need for me to see any doctors or have any more of the tests now. You could see a gasteroenterolgist closer to where you live privately, but not all of them are as good. I saw Dr Hanson as I wasn't getting anywhere with my previous gasteroenterogist. I wanted a second opinion. He asked a lot of questions of my history and was able to look at my whole case (nearly 4 years of tests and symptoms) with fresh eyes. He did perform a distention test to confirm this. I hope you can find a doctor who understands this and can work with you to find a medication that will help you. You do not need to be in this constant pain. Good luck.
@sarasimm6668
@sarasimm6668 5 жыл бұрын
Oh, and Dr Hanson does not recommend the low Fodmap diet as he feels it is punitive. He is right. Denying yourself all those foods doesn't really help. Sure, some of those foods produce gas, but I have been eating properly now for a couple of weeks. (I was too scared initially to try the foods). I have had wheat, onions, etc. I don't go overboard on fibre, so not wholemeal things and am cautious with fruit and vegetables. The problem with those foods is not the fodmaps, but the fact that they expand the gut more and irritate the nerves more. You probably won't believe me on this as, like me, you think the answer is in the foods we eat. It will take longer for you to test more foods until you feel confident that the pain response is significantly reduced. I have been on the tablets for around 10 weeks and have only just started to eat fodmaps and other carbohydrates again. So far, it is going fairly well.

Sending a hug hun! The IBS cycle is a massive downer isn’t it. That’s why I’ve not pushed the issue at my doctors. They don’t seem to care. I’m toying with the idea of going back and being referred as they never have done before. They always say to cut things out my diet, to lose weight etc etc, and it’s never worked. I think I find my triggers but then sometimes it’s other foods or not those foods. I’m at the point where it doesn’t really matter what I eat 🤷‍♀️ I know you know this, but you’re not alone. And as shitty as it is I’d second going private - wrongly it’s sometimes the only way to go. Sending hugs xx *freefromnat*

Sooo frustrating, I'm sorry you're still going through this. I am currently in a battle with my doctors because of a shit experience with a doctor where he completely dismissed me, and refused to refer me for support from a gastroenterologist/dietitian on the NHS even though I explained when I was diagnosed Coeliac I was never offered any further support, never had a endoscopy or further tests. I pushed it and he wrote me a horrible referral letter saying I can go privately if I want although he feels I only have symptoms due to Coeliac Disease. I'm trying to explain I shouldn't have any symptoms as I am gluten free! The latest is I complained to the practice manager, asking for further support and copies of my test results and she told me (when I rang her after hearing nothing for a month) well the doctor is off for a month so I will have to wait until he can look into it!!! So annoying.

Becky I feel your pain (literally and metaphorically)!!! Yesterday I went for a pointless colonoscopy, not at all nice, because I recognise that my issues are like yours more functional than physical so they can never get to the bottom of it. I’ve got confirmed IBS but also acid reflux disease and voice loss so my system doesn’t function at all from top to bottom and you are right it completely affects the quality of your life and they don’t seem to care at all! The only reason I got sent for a colonoscopy is because I admitted to addiction to loperamides and laxatives so they started to take me a little more seriously! I just feel like they don’t understand enough about it. What I will say is that I went for my first colonoscopy 15 years ago privately and had one follow up private appointment as that was all I was offered as I was dismissed as just having IBS... I have to say my private colonoscopy was traumatic beyond belief and would say paying doesn’t necessarily equate to better treatment or answers because 15 years later I’m in exactly if not worse place!!! Good luck with your endoscopy, been there got the T-shirt, my thoughts are with you xxx

I can understand what your going through with the doctors not listening. I was diagnosed with IBS about a year ago. So far I haven't been back to the doctor, they keep putting it off and not giving me an appointment. Then when I went to a nutritionalist they didn't help at all or put me on the Fodmap diet. They just told me to include some melons into my diet. the doctors around where I live don't care and won't help.

This one didn’t suggest anything not even a colonoscopy. He suggested an endoscopy and when I said that I’d had one 15 years ago he said ‘oh well that’s good you won’t need another then’, what the heck!! 15 years!! Good luck with your endoscopy hope you get it done soon. I’ve had 3 appointments through my trust with a dietician and tbh they weren’t that great. I’m saving up to see someone privately too. Hi Becky I can really to relate to the lack of empathy and care you felt from the doctor. I was diagnosed with Ibs in December and my doctor basically told me to look up the low fodmap diet, prescribed me buscopan and didn’t seem to care that I was in pain and afraid to eat. I was getting diarrhea and then the odd time constipation, however the pain in my left side under my left rib was horrible. It then spread nearer to the centre. I just feel like your going along living your life and suddenly you can’t do anything cause your afraid to go out in case the symptoms flare up. My gp suggested an abdominal ultrasound as I had thought due to the left side pain it could be my spleen causing the pain. Turns out I have 2 moderate sized gallstones however my gp doesn’t think it’s causing me the pain. I had to ask to be referred to the hospital (I’m in Ireland). Since researching gallstones I now know it can cause bowel problems. Just a suggestion but have you had an abdominal ultrasound. I was relieved when I found out I had gallstones as I thought oh maybe then I can have my gallbladder out and my problems will be gone. However some people say getting your gallbladder removed can make Ibs symptoms worse others say their Ibs cleared up entirely after suffering for years. If you haven’t looked into it, it may be worth a try. I’m terrified of being sent for an endoscopy or colonoscopy as I’m such a baby the dentist has to be prescribe me Xanax. Anyway I just wanted to let you know your not on your own. My whole life has changed since December and it’s horrible. I’m gone from a happy care free person to an anxious person afraid to eat most days and consumed with thoughts around my health. It’s horrible. I definitely find meditating and listening to relaxing videos on KZbin helps along with continuous cups of peppermint tea throughout the day. It can be so disheartening but I just really hope your ibs improves for you or that you get some insight that helps. Take care of yourself and I know it’s hard to stay positive as I get down being in pain nearly every day or even the fear of the pain coming on can be horrible. I try my best to stay positive and literally give myself a Pep talk most days in the shower, telling myself there is people much worse off than me. Unfortunately that doesn’t always work but I try to really enjoy feeling well when I’m not in pain and I appreciate the good patches when I’m feeling unwell x

Hello Becky, I know it gets very frustrating when doctors don’t show they are not interested but it is because they do not understand and have no suggestions. I cannot you understand why you can’t go see a gastro dietician. If I was was you I would demand a referral from your GP and say I am only repeating past experiences which lead to no where I need to try another option. The definition of insanity is said to be doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. I really do feel for you and anyone else suffering from food issues.Good luck and God bless you.

Hello Becky. A few months ago my naturopath suggested to do a “food comparability test”. I was somewhat sceptical but decided to proceed with the test recently just before my next hair cut. The test involves taking a small clump of hair from your head enough to cover a one centimetre by five centimetre rectangle. It took just over a week for the results to return. It is not a food allergy test per say but a food compatibility test and this is clearly stated on the first page of the 16 page report. Look I will be honest and say I was somewhat surprised how accurate it was, It not only covered food but also common products a person would use such as soap, cleaning products etc.. I would say it is 95% accurate as it missed one or two foods I know my body does not like. Having said that it presented a number of foods I was eating which according to this test I should not eat one being chicken. I am going to exclude those foods and see how I feel. The test picked up foods I knew I had issues with and the naturopath did not really know exactly which specific foods I had issues with so I can say this particular test is genuine, remember I was high,y sceptical. The cost of these tests at least here in Australia vary greatly so anyone contemplating thinking about this I would suggest ask around I fin someone who is well known with a good reputation, the cheapest or most costly are not necessarily the best options. I had to pay out of my own pocket, but when you are in pain and have issues one just has to try something different even though my GP said it was a waste of time and money. I won’t tell them. Ha ha.

Try Chlorophyll from iherb it’s almost the only thing that kinda worked with my IBS, my IBS is the worst I’ve had it for years, try it with probiotics but when you stop it the problems comes back :( but better than nothing :(

hi, becky! to be perfectly frank - that sucks completely. (remember, american here so that could take on a whole new meaning for you). i am so sad for you - obviously he doesn't listen or care. i did look to see what you got in response from your followers and i saw a couple with some good information. visceral hypersensitivity struck me as significant. it's something i have thought about regarding myself. this could be an issue in any part of the gastro tract and makes me think since the bloat and pain start post meal for you that it may be upper for you. i suspect mine is more large intestines. also the mention of gastroparesis - that's my issue. some people have stomachs that do not function at all and others have function but the muscles are not in synchrony. that is where i suspect i am. also some have very slow motility. meaning what is eaten sits there until more comes in to push it into the small intestines. i'm thinking you should save up and go to a private doctor. i'm not sure you need an endoscopy but prolly a motility study. i am no expert - but that kind of thing would make sense to me. also prolly a good talk with the doctor about what your poop is like - sorry, it's kind of gross but there are a lot of telling things about digestion regarding what comes out. i'm not sure that i am much help but do know, we all struggle with this in one way or another, and genuinely care about you. BIG HUGS! ~k

In the states we have IBGuard. Do you have that in the UK? You shouldn't have to get another endoscopy.

Becky your issues are chemical within your body something is not agreeing with you. Have you tried avoiding products with yeast? This test I had showed incompatibility with wheat and the naturopath suggested avoiding yeast products ie bread, vegemite etc. I did not realise wheat is found in products including confectionery.

Exactly what is happening to me. I am very disappointed with the doctors now. what they say is that you are ok and you don't have any problem. do more yoga and drink more!!! It is nice to know you are alone, but I am sorry for your situation also

You poor thing vi feel so bad for you. Are you able to go private? I live in Israel and when I can’t find a good doc through the healthcare I will go private. It’s worth it. Private docs will treat you with more respect. I wish you good health. I hope you can find a solution. I have ibs d. Right now I’m ok after a course of Lormyx. Don’t know how long this normalcy will last but I’m feeling good right now. All the best!

Hi Becky, I never comment on KZbin videos but I would really recommend seeing Hannah Kieldson. She is a kinesiologist and has been more helpful than any GP or hospital appointment I've ever had in my past 2 years experience with IBS - and her approach is completely holistic. Its about £80 for an appointment with her but I would say its absolutely worth it if you can. Here is her site: www.hannahkeildson.co.uk/

If you're seeing conventional doctor for food related issues , most often than not they will tell you eat fiber and get over it... I would rather see a naturopath or functional medicine doctor , someone who believes and studies the effect of food on the gut. This is what I'm doing in the next few weeks , I've been sort of diagnosed with IBS C, without any tests, I've had some problems with digestion and anxiety for the past 10 years, they come and go...one day I can eat anything , the next the healthiest of food sends me into terrible colon spasms. Following low FODMAP has been saving me but I still want to check if perhaps my gut flora is completely out of whack and get some answers...who knows maybe it's gluten or whatever....But change the doctor. Good luck Becky, and I hope we bough get some answers.

My gastroenterologist never said I had to take probiotics, and my naturopath said that the first time she saw me. They understand and really listen to us. I just start feeling better after seeing a non conventional doctor. It's expensive but well, the money was make to be spent... Good luck to you!

Hi Becky you are smart to take healing into your own hands. I would recommend reading Weston A. Price's book "Nutritional and Physical Degeneration" and the original GAPS book by Natasha Campbell Mcbride. Wish you the best.

Hey Becky, I'm so sorry with the issues you've had. I have experienced the same exact thing for the last many years, with lots of endoscopy and colonoscopy, the NHS unfortunately doesn't care for minor issues like ours even if our minor issues aren't minor at all in fact can lead to more serious issues too over 10 yr period. There is a KZbinr who I have been getting help from, #askgojiman check out his channel @gojiman, I paid and did the tests and again I came back positive for SIBO and other issues. Working with Gojiman now. I would recommend you to check it out. Message me if you need more info too. Best.of luck.

So it takes months to get in to get an endoscopy? This is the UK health care? 🤭my friends in canada say the same thing. I sure hope we dont go there in the u s. I havent been helped by the gastro drs but i can get into them pretty quickly. I have had 5 gastro dr and none have helped. So maybe you havent missed anything.
