"Forty years ago, it was considered by some a risky move for the guys who play professional golf to break away from the group created for golf professionals." This was about the PGA Tour splitting from The PGA of America in 1969. "The golf breakup occurred largely because of the influx of money that television had started to pump into the game. The top players (Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer among them) wanted to use the additional TV money to pump up the purses." "The PGA of America wanted to put the money in the general fund. That's when the compromise was reached, with the golf professionals and the professional golfers going their separate ways." Sounds a bit like today... The PGA tour categorized itself as a non profit so it could avoid hundreds of millions in tax revenue. That decision is now haunting them since it also means they can't hand out guaranteed money contracts like other professional sports.The LIV tour is doing exactly that so it's not surprising top level golfers want guaranteed money. If someone loses their PGA tour card they're gone with very little support. I don't see how you can treat people as independent contractors and then complain when they go elsewhere.

To me this feels like the attempt to create the European Super League - raid the best players (clubs) from an already established system to create an elite league. Instead what's happened is basically two categories of players jumped to LIV 1) past their prime, very unlikely to win on the Tour, but not old enough for Champions League (think 35 to 49 year olds) and 2) complainers and dissenters on the Tour (Mickelson, DeChambeau, and Reed).

We just got back from London. Once the people found out we were Americans, we were treated terribly. Me, my wife, and my two teenage daughters (all golfers). We were actually refused service in a couple of places. We went to a cool little place to order some fish and chips, she told us the kitchen was closed and they weren't taking orders, then we watched the girl take 4 more orders after us. I said, "hey, I thought the kitchen was closed? I told my daughter that England was the home of Fish and Chips, she loves it, so she couldn't wait." She said, "kitchen is closed...for you". I was like wow. The people in Liverpool were pretty cool though. What a beautiful country. Hopefully your trip to New York was better.

G'day Rick, totally respect your opinion and appreciate everything you've done for golf and the people in which all of your work extends too ($100k to charity? Absolutely unreal!). But c'mon man. This LIV thing is about so much more than just the tournament. It's all about the money. You danced around the sports washing claims but at the end of the day you are just sitting on the fence. Your voice and reach is huge. I'd love to see you take some time, do some research (No Laying Up and The Fried Egg has some great pods on this) and then come back to us with where you stand.

The fence is a legitimate place to be right now. If Canada had started this new league, would it have been received any better by Jay M. or the PGA in general? No. He would still find ugly controversy to spill all over the media, for the benefit of his PGA monopoly. It's just throwing rocks. Any rocks he can find, to protect against threats to his interests. Rick Shields personal, or political beliefs are not on trial here. This is his opinion and I am glad that took all of that media generated hate, and set it aside for the sake of a meaningful conversation about golf and it's players and it's future.

I agree with 99% of what you guys are putting out…I was hoping LIV would really shake things up a bit…54 holes is not new despite some PGA Tour pundits saying it’s stupid (Champions Tour), or having no cuts (hmm…WGC events)…I want to see more like an F1 atmosphere, or like an all star game week…have a day of skills competitions…long drive, chip and putt, team competitions that earn you some privileges on the course like they did with that Golf Channel show some years ago…loud music, crazy uniforms for the teams…some Ryder Cup style stuff like 4 ball, or alternate shot, instead of 3 rounds of stroke play…if they really want to grow the game, they need to showcase the fun aspects of golf…the shotgun start is good, but not crazy. Add a shot clock to showcase golf is fun and you can play it in a reasonable amount of time…Lastly, the 1% where I disagree with you guys…the PGA Tour is the one making the source of the money a big issue, trying to create a moral aspect to selecting LIV over the PGA Tour…No one attacked Jack Nicklaus last week at the Memorial about him taking money from the same Saudi group (his words) to build a signature golf course in Saudi Arabia…yet, he’s a starter at the Masters, host of a PGA event, etc…without any issue…so, not buying it. The PGA issue is two-fold…losing current players (so they use the allegiance card and cut them off from competing), but the bigger issue will be the new guys who are in college or other non-PGA tour competitions. They have no allegiance to the PGA or anyone else…so, the PGA Tour is trying to play the morality card with the source of the money argument…

I recorded the Scandinavian mixed and watched ‘as live’ later. In the final 9 holes I noticed that a few of Linn Grant’s second shots were really close to the green so I was curious to see what the course length was for the ladies. I couldn’t find any mention of it so I replayed her full round and wrote down the distances for each hole. This is the results: Hole 1 - Par 4. Men 434 - women 357 Hole 2 - Par 5. Women 5,911 This was just for the final round so whether the ladies tees were longer in earlier rounds - ie 6,400 as Rick refers to I do not know. Now don’t get me wrong I really wanted Linn Grant to win and she was pretty amazing under pressure. But the ladies were playing for the same purse and I am not sure if I was one of the male professionals that I would be entirely happy that the ladies course was so short. I do agree that there needs to be some compensation for ladies in these events but over 1,000 yards difference for 18 holes seems a lot to me. On the other hand the top of the leaderboard was not packed with ladies so if only 2 ladies finished in the top 20, it can’t have been that easy for them!

The shotgun start will prove to be huge for LIV golf. The average fan can’t sit and watch a tournament for six hours or more in a day. Even if it’s a major and they really want to! Life often steps in, as it tends to do, and we’re pulled away to do something else. That being said, if a tournament round on the LIV tour only takes as long as a football game, most of us are able to tune in to the full program, and become more invested as a result. I personally love what LIV golf is doing. I think it’s good for the game. I think it will ultimately force the pga to make some changes that will make life better for their golfers too. The one thing I think that is detrimental in all of this is the PGA Tour has turned this into an Us vs Them situation when there's no need for it. This has made the majority of the golfing press take sides, as well as a bunch of the players! There's no reason these tours can't co-exist, and there's no reason that players shouldn't be able to play events in both. The PGA Tour already has requirements to remain on it, as long as a player fulfills those requirements, why can't they play any other events that they want?

Things that are not mentioned: 1) All golfers got to play with the same weather unlike some tournaments where the weather changes massively between morning and afternoon. 2) Not a lot of time wasted waiting for golfers to choose an iron or eye a putt. 3) No time wasted establishing some sort of narrative behind particular players. The anti LIV arguments are pretty contradicting and hypocritical: - LIV is not a "proper field" of "subpar players", yet we're so bothered they're not playing in the PGA? - LIV players taking money from Saudi is so bad since Saudis are horrible, but it's OK to buy the Saudi gas for the rich PGA players' luxury cars & the course maintenance equipment. - It's also totally fine to buy all the golf club heads, golfing equipment and broadcasting electronics and smartphones from China, though China does all the things we complain about Saudis doing. Every PGA player uses and accepts sponsorship from Chinese made equipment and clothing - Jack Nicholas designs golf courses for Saudi Arabia, yet he is the all time hero of the game while the LIV players are unethical I'm not any more a fan of what Saudis have done than anyone else, but I'm not in a position to judge people for doing business with them

Yeah competition is the major thing for sport at least for me. When there is nothing really on the line then what's the point. It's the same thing when the teams tried to create their own super league, Sure it's having good teams face good teams all the time but over time it will get boring and when you have no promotion or relegation basically a gate kept league then what's the point. I do however think the tours should support more financially though, See it all the time up and coming and even veterans of the game are struggling so hard to make ends meet and must play on peoples minds all the time. This is where you might see more people go over to LIV golf. To put in perspective Ian Poulter made around 1.5mil last year or the year before. He would of had to play semi decent to do this making cuts etc etc. Now all he has to do is to turn up to 8 events and come last and make 960k.

I believe these discussion regarding the LIV Tour have been pushed towards two points by the media, social media, and the PGA Tour. Crazy amount of money and being in bed with the Saudis. I believe it is about having a "Free Market". Here is what I mean. The guy that owns one of the famous golf shops in the town of St Andrews, finds out tomorrow that the UK government has decided that Decathlon Sporting Stores will be the only store in the UK allowed to sell Golf equipment, clothing and accessories. All other golf shops throughout the UK must close their shops. Also the only automotive company that can sell cars is Tesla. The PGA owns and runs the World of Golf. Do you want to talk insane money. Think about how much money the PGA gets from televison coverage each year. They also controls the players of golf, these independent contactors that do not get health insurance, profit sharing travel expenses, nothing. So of course the PGA is going to fight. Next the Saudis. Next month, President Biden is visiting the Saudis to beg them to produce more oil. The Saudis are America's largest and most important importer/exporter. Let's talk about some small companies that deal heavily with the Saudis. Chase Manhattan Bank, RBC is listed as an underwriter of a 1.2 trillion dollar deal for the Saudis. The RBC is the Dustin Johnson's sponsor who cut ties with him because he decided to play in a LIV Tournament. Ford Motor Company that owns Bentley. Also Marriott Hotels, Hyatt Hotels, and the list goes on and on. You see a small independent golf cannot make money for him and his family but The major World Corporations can. There is something very wrong with all of this. Sorry for the long comments. Love your channels Rick.

For me this is simple, if players can fulfil their PGA contracts and their LIV contracts then they have the right to do what they want, without the fear of being suspended as they are not in breach of their contracts. They should only be suspended if they breach their contract. Does anyone know if these players are in breach of their contracts, as I haven’t seen any evidence that they are.

@@michaelhutcheson5897 I don't have a copy. I don't know if it's something that's obtainable to be honest ... I know PGA professionals are allowed to play any number of co sanctioned events. And they can request up to 3 releases a season for non co sanctioned events. My understanding is that the releases for Centurion were denied because LIV is not an official tour, it isn't recognised by any governing bodies. Hence why there are no ranking points.

@@WayneCatlin well if that is in the pga contract then yes if they want to play LIV they should resign from the PGA. I haven’t seen that though, and I heard that isn’t the case, but happy to accept it is until I know otherwise.

If for whatever reason you wanted to start or thought there should be a competitive tour to the PGA tour or the DP tour, what way besides money would you be able to convince the best players in the world to play on this new tour? Or personally if they can keep the format such that the golfers enjoy it and the fans can enjoy it similarly to a normal tour, then the challenge is to only get players over to your new tour…

Hey Rick, i have one kind of statement/question that has been picking at me thru all of this LIV golf ,PGA back and forth. I've been a fan of golf for a long time thanks to my love of the underdog story and Tiger of course, but have only been playing since summer of 2020. I've played at hundreds of courses now and have met a ton of great people, and everyone ive talked to has said how since Covid the game has grown. ive watched more golf on television and follow numerous channels on youtube,(by the way would love to see you have Good Good play with you in some of their formats and yours in europe of course and maybe in the U.S. later if we're lucky)and on these platforms and in person have some amazing young talent. ive also seen the struggles of guys trying to stay on the tour and others who just want to make a single tour event.I feel like with a world population of as many of us as we are, whatever that number is, is there not enough "good golfers" that deserve to actually make some money?. i understand the importance of playing well during a tournent to earn better, but does that devalue what a person has gone thru to even just get there? to me a 150 man field seems easy to me to fill with people who can play good golf, while inviting and inspiring viewers to watch. i have about thirty people i could think of and there are probably tons more i havent been lucky enough to even know for whatever reason that i would love to see play and get paid for the hard work it took to get there.How many times have you or me or anyone played well one day and other days not so well? it doesnt make these guys on the brink of qualifying or "making it to the money" any less deserving of something so that they can continue the fight for par!!!!i think over the upcoming years we are going to see some really good young golfers that can fill a roster on any league..curios as to your thoughts!!!! big fan i hope to break 75 someday!!!

Having another option for the players is obviously great, however I don’t agree with all them jumping on board with the Saudis. Morally, not real real sure how the American players can do it especially.

Guess we can’t put fuel in our cars or PGA pros can’t fill up their private jets then if you are concerned about morals…or are you just concerned about taking money from them vs products?

I get the complaints about the Saudis, but can we really complain that people take their money when we give them money for their gas? And when we have all the golf equipment, electronics and all that manufactured in China which is clearly no better than Saudi?

@@WilliamDunn1 all good points so when do we draw the line regarding being self sufficient?
@WilliamDunn1
@WilliamDunn1 2 жыл бұрын
It's hard to make arguments about self sufficiency if we also consider arguments about China relationships. Corporations like TaylorMade and Nike choose to manufacture their products in China despite the same kind of unethical practices, and the profits they make from that relationship directly sponsors and funds the PGA players and tour. Rory for example is sponsored by and promotes both companies, and even drives a gas guzzling Ferrari that uses more gas than any normal person. I'm thinking it's probably not fair to then trash LIV players on such grounds when we hold guys like Rory in such high regard

I won’t lie, this stinks of Rick and Guy trying not to slag off something that may be able to become a great fee earner for the company. See out the initial backlash hope it fades out and then take a pay day (potentially). I like the channel and have no beef with the guys. Just found it very cynical and would have preferred if you are going to talk about both sides of the tournament that they had educated themselves on the Saudi royal family before briefly skirting the ‘human right issues’ If you think a golf tournament / series is making a dent on their pockets your dreaming. It is a way to make us think they are a great bunch of lads who like a kick about and a thwack down at top golf. When really they only let women be educated without the permission of a male guardian in TWENTY SEVENTEEN! It was really disappointing seeing influencers there on the weekend. Who are they not willing to take money off to do #ADs off

I feel like LIV needs the PGA & DP World tours. These tours give a yardstick to measure a players level, global position and therefore their pull factor. If the players are off those tours long enough people will begin to disregard their then and their level of game . LIV has a cool idea with team competitions but why not just have a handful of Ryder cup style competitions a year for absurd prize money. More hyped and less disruptive for the proven tours. My two cents…
