I love this! I also think that there is now a growing social work community on KZbin! I just started a series called ‘What the Social Work?’ and reflecting on my journey, growth, etc. I too looked for people as inspiration when I was in my program, and could not find any. I’m super excited to find someone else who loves connecting and sharing with others about the field! 💛 P.S.- you mentioned Atlanta. I’m also in GA too!

I am watching this a year later as I am starting my last semester of my MSW, after having to extend my time in the masters program due to financial issues (I was stubborn and refused to pull out any loans). I became emotional because my first internship was also in the prisons (a la fall 2021) and I ran into similar obstacles as you. Throughout the video, I have also reflected on my time in grad school and I couldn't help but really evaluate how far I have come as a social work student, how I got my first job in the field my first semester of grad school, all of the amazing people I've met, and even being pregnant during my last year of school (baby is due a couple weeks before graduation). Thank you for sharing your experience! ❤❤

omg wow. you are amazing! thank you for this comment! first off, i'm so happy to hear you've had such a transformative grad school experience. also, I am amazed that you got through pregnancy while being a student. im at a stage in my life where id love to have my first child within the next 3-4 years, but that may conflict with grad school/early career times -- im applying right now for the coming fall. id like to wait until im a little settled in my career to have a child, but I have to say it's really comforting to read your comment, just incase things don't go as planned. reading your comment reminded me that anything is possible, and it will all be okay regardless. keep killing it sis! :)

Nurse makes a lot more. Social Work is great for former addicts, battered women and veterans. This profession is really hard mentally and you see crazy stuff...

I have been watching you for a while. I started an MSW at a local university and it was horrendous. After completing my first semester, I decided to drop the program, take the summer off, and apply to other locations. I have applied to University of Denver and waiting for a letter of recommendation to finish out my application for Fordham. I want to thank you for putting Fordham on my radar.

@@AnnaBea thank you, thank you! I am praying that taking this break and transferring programs will result in a less dysfunctional environment. The foundations advisor for my former program was reluctant to help (did not respond efficiently) throughout my first semester but excited to drop me from my courses (replied within the hour and did it with a smiling emoji).

Thank you for vlogging your journey, Anna, so informative! Are the majority of BSW and MSW courses writing-emphasized?
@AnnaBea2 жыл бұрын
I would say more writing heavy than test heavy, but it didn't feel too excessive of writing to me! Lots of papers are moreso reflection papers than academic papers, though there are a few of those sprinkled in there as well

Can you become a LCSW with a specialization in advanced generalist ? My goal is to be a therapist and I know that there is the clinical specialization but not that many schools offer that online 😊
@AnnaBea Жыл бұрын
check the specifics of your state but usually, yes!! LCSW eligibility is typically determined by your hours of experience after you graduate more so than the specific classes you take in grad school

I def agree that an MSW can open doors, but you can also build social work experience by being out in the field and getting experience. You can definitely climb your way up a job area with a BSW (if that's even a goal to climb a job ladder); check out job listings in your area to get a gauge of what types of jobs could be obtained with a BSW! I would (with a whole lot of bias lol) recommend a BSW because it will shave a year off a masters if that is the path you do want to take in the future, but also, neither option is a bad choice :)

how did you choose social work vs mental health counseling? i’m trying to decide between the two right now or see if either are an option for me at all. previously i did a masters in SLP but didn’t finish and it wasn’t the field for me
@AnnaBea Жыл бұрын
I personally preferred the versatility of the social work degree! With SW, I could do everything I could do with a mental health counseling degree plus more but with a mental health counseling degree, I couldn’t do everything I can do with a social work degree. Good luck! 💗

Hi does the MSW school you go to matter? For example going to like an ivy league vs a non ivy league?
@AnnaBea Жыл бұрын
I think it matters more to find a school that is a fit for what you're looking for in a program. For example, some are more academic, research, reading, paper heavy and some may be more practical skills, experience, role play, self-reflection heavy (just as an example) and so you would get a much better experience at the school that fits you even if the other is considered one of the "top" schools! make sure you're program is accredited, but other than that, just find a good fit for you and you're set :)
