I'm interested. I understand that the instruction comes from the recordings, but I don't understand who grades the papers. Does the student send them to IEW or does the homeschooling parent grade them? Thanks.

My 5th grader does Structure and Style Level A, he is on week 21. I have seen a huge improvement in his writing, his editing, and in his confidence in writing. The key to success, in my opinion, is to watch the videos for the week on Sunday night (or along side your child) to know what is being taught and what is expected for the week. Also editing your child's paper and discussing the edits so that your child will then begin to recognize their own mistakes in the future. By watching the videos yourself you can also familiarize yourself with the examples given to make sure your child doesn't copy ideas from the students in the videos! We will be doing level B for 6th grade. For other language arts we use Abeka, we've never used other IEW programs.

Forgot to add, my son loves it! He loves the jokes, he feels connect to the class. He talks about the students in class as if he knows them. It's a great program!

I actually love fix it grammar for my 2nd grader. I bought it for third grade, but she wanted to jump on and start the book. She has understood it really well, and the lessons are very simplified to teach your child. Thanks for your structure and style review. I believe I should probably get it for my daughter. I didn’t know they had a free trial! Thank you! I was going to purchase but my son (he’s 13 but loathes writing so wanted to start from the beginning because I’m all about the foundation) is not a fan of most writing curriculums and it’s a bit pricey so this is perfect to see if it is a fit for us.

We are working on week 5 right now and this is the most they had to write which is 2 paragraphs. But it’s broken up pretty well. They are essentially rewriting the same excerpt they read. Atleast that’s how it’s been all the lessons so far. My oldest isn’t a huge fan of writing and she is liking this because it tells them exactly what to do. We do spread out 1 week over 2 weeks, I don’t make them spending more than 45 mins on it which 30 of that is the actually video lesson. I highly recommend doing the 3 week trial to see if it works

Thanks for the video. Curious if you have an update a year later? Did you take/purchase and complete the full teacher training in order to properly teach your child? I purchased the IEW curricula, but I haven't had the time yet to complete the Teaching Structure and Style program for myself. Is it possible to effectively use this program with my children, even if I didn't complete the teaching training portion to teach my children well?? Can I just primarily learn right along with my children and still learn to effectively teach them to write well using IEW techniques? Thanks.

We did the three week trial for SS1A for my 3 kiddos, end of 2nd grade, 5th and 6th at the time. We loved it and bought the curriculum. My youngest loves writing and does very very well with writing so she started it pretty young as a tag along and loved it at first. But the lessons quickly became too long for her writing stamina. Since we were doing it all together, we couldn't really slow down for her, so I would scribe for her for a while but eventually it just became too much. As the course progresses the videos become longer and longer and my older two even became annoyed with how long the lessons were taking. The first 1/4 of the lessons or so were perfect, but we struggled through the later lessons. My son is in 7th and just started the grammar and it is ok, but I don't think my kids without as much grammar could do it. Curious what will you be switching to for grammar.
