This and your “do a week with me” video is the best and most helpful video I’ve seen on IEW. Thank you! I noticed you mentioned a pro was that you didn’t feel the teaching videos for the parent were necessary, but then you listed a con as wanting more teacher hand holding. Do you think the teaching course would have solved that? I’m also wondering for myself if the teaching course is worth the investment. I’m looking to start my oldest in a couple years when he’s in upper elementary.

Ok. This is such a good point. The con of having to edit their work. I am not good at English. Therefore, I am not going to be able to edit their work in the upper levels. EIW offers grading services, which may be a benefit to us. Your video was great.

$169 For a single subject is a big no for me. Not even Calculus, Physics and Chemistry college books for my oldest cost this much. I appreciate you always have great content.

So, that is exactly what I needed to hear. I don’t have time to watch 14hrs of instruction prior to beginning my child in the program. I’ve heard it said that people could use the teacher videos with the teacher and student together. So it makes sense you could do it with her with the student videos alone.

Thank you for this! This year we’re using All Things Fun and Fascinating from IEW and although we’re only 3 weeks in, my 3rd grader is really enjoying it, so looking to stick with IEW if it all continues to go well!

Thanks. Right now we are using Building Writers for my 2nd grader and IEW Fix It Grammar. I love Fix It Grammar but I am not sure if I am down with spending that much money on Structure and Style. We are looking around before I buy anything for when she is older.

I just started watching. This curriculum was a game changer for my 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. They used MBTP for years prior and it was lacking in formal writing. This really helped them to organize their thoughts and improve their writing and grammar! With that being said, they did not love the videos 😅 so we are going to try EIW next year and if it doesn't work out, we'll be back to IEW.

I have an 8th grader and was thinking of getting 1A structure and style because we haven’t done that writing curriculum ever before (we’ve used writhing with ease, excellence etc).

I am still on the fence because of the length of videos but talked to a representative at a homeschool convention and it really made a difference in our decision.

@ambers4524 there is no question that IEW works. The videos are forever stream so you can pace the videos as you like to accommodate you kids

How do you think this would fair for a kid that has special needs? Mine has ASD, ADHD and Dysgraphia, which is a sister to Dyslexia but plays out with trouble in writing.

We use it in a co-op setting. It works great but you have to consider how often the co-op meets to have the perfect timing schedule. We meet once a week and squeeze it all into a 2 hr session.

Program worked for my 6th grade daughter, but videos were too long for my 7th grade son. My kids are in high school now.

My daughter would not respond well to me editing her papers. Upper Jr high and high school have been essentials in writing with the grading component. It’s ok. But I’m probably a harsh critic bc I was a high school and college English instructor

What would you recommend before using this? my daughter is going into second grade I want her know to know more about noun, verbs, homophones, adjectives, synonyms and all of that stuff would that fall under grammar? I don’t even know where to start for language arts curriculum for her.

Depends on the 2nd grader. This is perfect for my 10 year old, and my very advanced 7 year old, but my 8 year old probably wont be able to do it, and my 10 year old is just now ready... all kids are different.

Structure and Style can also be paired with the fix it Grammar workbook to practice the Grammar portion of language arts. This is a very unique writing program as it teaches grammar through writing papers as well. Each week the student will have to apply grammar as they write, for example they will need to learn how to use ly adverbs in their writing in the first unit, they add new styles for each writing assignment and it is done not in an overwhelming way. The program also includes reading suggestions for each week, which you can use to cover the reading portion of language arts or choose other books that your child is interested in. You will have to add spelling, IEW does have a spelling curriculum too or you can just choose another company for that.
