Hi, Justina. I just want to thank you for telling me about Sydney Cummings, and I thought your newest video was as good a place as any to do it. Sydney's workouts have completely transformed me with their functionality, and I feel like a different person. I was in dire need of a KZbinr who isn't fixated on aesthetics and understands how the body works. Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction. Love your content, keep up the good work.

Justina, I haven't gotten into this video yet, but I just wanted to say that I've implemented some of your functionality/mobility exercises into my routine and I'm able to squat without knee pain for the first time in years! So a weird thing. I have actually found that lifting heavy has increased my bulk by quite a lot. I’m a lesbian so…it’s increasing the popularity haha but I will say when I was just doing high reps low weights I wasn’t very bulky I was more runner body. But then once I started actually lifting heavy weights…honestly my arms and legs got kinda huge kinda fast. I don’t know sometimes what to tell women worried about the bulk because honestly within a month I looked pretty different. I do have a tendency to put on muscle fast but…yeah. I will say I am not in a calorie deficit and I am eating a lot of protein so it might be more that then anything else but I sometimes wonder if it’s misleading to tell women lifting heavy won’t make them bulky….cause it definitely increased my bulk (again great for me in my subculture) but yeah it’s definitely not for everyone.

Same, weights made me bigger to the point where I went up a clothes size. I still do it because I like the muscles but I've definitely built big thighs and shoulder muscles especially.
@MsKoik2 жыл бұрын
It's a combination of genetics + diet. Most women won't get bulky without serious effort and meal planning. Lucky you, though ! Bulky women look amazing ;)
@JustinaErcole2 жыл бұрын
I think this depends on your definition of bulky. A lot of women tell me that I look bulky. Personally, I think I look strong. I'd highly recommend focusing more on the long term health benefits of strength training instead. Just one example as women, we have a much higher risk of osteoporosis as we age. Strength training helps reduce that risk immensely. But if you'd rather prioritize aesthetics then maybe strength training isn't for you!
@Karentulla2 жыл бұрын
@@JustinaErcole Kinda mindblowing how we are trained to see female bodies - I definetly think you look strong and not bulky at all, but a few years ago before I started consuming more health and strength related content rather than „fashionable“/ „female aesthetic“ stuff I would probably have thought otherwise. I am putting aesthetic in quotes, because this also depends on your own definition.

I had to skip the barre re-review section because -- I think you were being so hard on yourself! This is a personal opinion, but watching the review quite some time back helped me figure out what I could and could not achieve from a barre workout. I still ended up doing barre as cardio for a while (and as an occasional alternative to yoga and pilates), while incorporating it into into a weekly schedule that prioritised strength workouts. And I have girlfriends who find it beneficial to do both barre and strength for different reasons; your video articulates why this is the case for those of us who feel the reasons but lack the education to articulate them as well. As frank as you are, I think you have been fairer than other reviewers of other influencers. Eg: if I recall correctly you pointed out how Chloe Ting works out different planes of motion, and how she gets people moving (while also acknowledging across your videos how messaging by influencers can impact what audiences understand about fitness, for better or for worse). The "getting people moving" message you gave in more than one video, made me a lot kinder and more considerate of people close to me, who wouldn't exercise if they were made to feel overwhelmed over what fitness should be, not until they had a routine figured out and felt comfortable with exploring what "functional" means for them. I have learnt a lot from your videos.

You come across honest, to the point, you don't sugar coat and it is YOUR OPINION of the workouts after you have tried them. I have been an avid multi-sport girl, but as I am getting up there in age, my over-used body parts have been complaining and as a result I have been looking for good workouts (without cheer-leading) so when I found you and your reviews, it was like I hit the jackpot. Your barre review - I totally got it. It is hard to find functional workouts that are real workouts and through you I also found Sydney Cummings. I also like Caroline Givan workouts (especially the no-talking), I am in total awe of her, but man those workout are HARD, but I will still do a few of them just to watch her. So keep up the good work and don't be so hard on yourself.

I do wish you probably delved into what is true among those claims made for barre, rather than simply the marketing gimmicks that were fed to us. That way it tilts the review video to something more balanced. I have been doing Les Mills Barre for almost a year (once a week only though) and I love it. I combine this with 3x resistance training per week, so I agree with many of your points there. p/s: I noticed the videos of the ballerinas were taken from the Les Mills promotional video for their barre program haha! Justina - you are completely spot on calling out the “long lean muscle” BS that Barre use in their promotional material (they are far from being the only ones - the world’s biggest provider of studio classes use the same phrase in relation to their resistance training class). I have had many clients ask me about this idea. While it’s possible to restore muscle length that has been lost due to poor posture / injury / inactivity - but increasing it? Not so much! (I’ve often wondered what would do with the extra muscle length if it was true. Tie it in a knot to stop it flapping about?😳). On a side note - from my brief experience of living in New York - that is not a small kitchen! You really should have been subletting it!😉

I have been doing barre for years and I LOVE it. The algorithm gods must have known this because the first video of yours I watched was the barre video. I don’t disagree with anything you said but there isn’t just one “barre”. There are many barre brands and they all do things differently. The brand I do is my ride-or-die and I HAVE experienced and continue to experience positive changes. That said, your barre video was a bit of a “truth hurts” experience because deep down I know some of the claims they make are absolutely ridiculous. I didn’t keep watching you but then I saw Obese to Beast’s video and came back. And stayed this time. 🙂 It’s so cool that you did this video because your barre video kind of rubbed me the wrong way and now I know I wasn’t just being overly sensitive. I’m kind of snarky myself and I love snark when it’s deserved so I’m out here watching your videos. 🍿 As an online fitness community, we have to pull the masks off some of these people who are lying and KNOW they’re lying. Hmmn..I'm a scientist with a Serena body before there was a Serena. I went into the military and bulked up where I gained 3 lbs but was considered overweight. For my wedding my trainer put me on a program with Hiit and heavier weights and things got worst. Barre workouts actually changed my physique and high reps definitely gave me those sculpted arms without me being ashamed to show them or get snarky remarks from strangers. Genetics will play a role and for endomorphs..it definitely sucks for us. We have to find the best blend for the overall goal. Those live barre classes definitely kick butt even if you are a cathe or kelly fan.🤣
@JustinaErcole2 жыл бұрын
I think it's important to remember that "bulky" is a relative term. A lot of people call me bulky, but I don't see myself that way. Genetics absolutely play a huge part in muscle gain, so we can definitely agree there. But I think it's important to remember the health benefits of strength training, which are completely different than aesthetic. If you enjoy barre (just like I do) then I think that's great! But sending the message that lifting something heavier than 10 pounds will only result in bulk with no other benefits is irresponsible.
@dloganable2 жыл бұрын
Like others here I also found that video helpful at that moment in my life. Question: your videos and other finger-wagging reviews often point out that “feeling a burn” in a particular muscle is not the same thing as hypertrophy. But clearly something is happening. So what is happening?
@JustinaErcole2 жыл бұрын
So hypertrophy (or visible muscle growth) needs enough stimulus to grow. A lot of the workouts that “feel a burn” simply don’t have enough resistance for that specific adaptation. Often you’re simply stabilizing or working for endurance. Hopefully that helps! I tried to simplify as much as possible :)

Still not explaining whether barre works for what people usually want when they go to it. "Long and lean" doesn't mean you'll be taller or your arms will be actually longer. It usually means that it'll give you more of a "model-esque" look. Of course, bf% plays a huge role, but what people are usually looking for is a look, rather than a function. I'm not saying this is right or wrong, I'm saying what "long and lean muscles" usually means in this context. The word "toned" will continue to be used until a better way to describe the image in our minds comes to exist. Yes, looking "toned" might require someone to gain a bit o muscle, but what we are usually looking for is "muscle definition without the bulk" and "bulking" is very subjective🤷🏼♀️, i know. For example: Sydney Cummings, great instructor, great fitness, beautiful, whatever...if i looked like her, I'd think i look bulky. Pamela reif and lily sabri, on the other hand, look more "long and lean" regardless of their height. I hope i was able to clear this up for you/anyone reading

It’s literally impossible for me to explain if barre “works” without me knowing your goals. I don’t need clearing up on my own video.

@@JustinaErcole i wasn't talking about "my goals" i was just explaining what people usually mean when they say "long and lean". I doubt someone thinks that their bones will become longer (and hence muscle insertion points more separated) because of a workout. And if we're talking about goals specifically, i again doubt that people who want to actually build serious muscle think barre will achieve that. No need to get defensive 💕

Coming from years of experience coaching, you would be very surprised what people think is possible. Would love to hear your experience as a coach!

@@JustinaErcole i never said i was a coach😂 so idk where those assumptions are coming from. If you're a coach, though, i would think that you would appreciate understanding more about what people usually think when they hear or say certain "buzz words" or what they're actually looking for when they think about starting pilates, barre, ballet-inspired workouts or similar. Sometimes we as "regular people" don't know exactly which "correct" words to use to describe a goal, and we'll use the popular ones/the ones we know in order to communicate "i want *that* look". Again, no need to get defensive or talk/write in a way that makes you "sound like an asshole", something that you seem to be able to recognize, according to your own video.
