I purchased this pressure washer very recently and finally got a chance to really use it today. (I bought it after doing some research and seeing that this washer had one of the highest number of positive reviews I'd ever seen.) After my first test a couple of days ago, I'd written to Westinghouse to ask about the motor stuttering momentarily if I let go of the trigger while it's running. I just wondered if that was normal. Then today I came across this video. Imagine my surprise when lo and behold you were using the washer and let go of the trigger and the engine stuttered for a moment. I loved the way you slowly looked at it as it did that, then gave the thumbs-up a few seconds later when the engine smoothed back out. Ha, I replied to Westinghouse and told them everything was okay and sent them a link to that exact point in your video! Thanks Steve... Miller time!

regarding the generator: Some important details that you did not mention: Is the output full wave? Is the output analog or stepped square wave? Can it handle having too large a current load? What is the fuel burn, per hour, for propane? What is the fuel burn, per hour, for gasoline? What is the dba noise level?
@VoluntaristSociety4 жыл бұрын
the only generators without full wave output are inverter generators. this always spins at the same rpm, and always outputs the same voltage, thus no inverter needed, albeit for increased low load fuel usage.
@VictorSilva-rq4kz4 жыл бұрын
All generators that produce electricity from a spinning generator will have a sine wave output. You're thinking of 12V to 120/240VAC inverters that produce modified square wave, which is really bad for electronics.
@rkwill1004 жыл бұрын
@@VoluntaristSociety I had a champion 3500 watt generator that used square wave stepping for voltage production (I.E. it (sort of) looked like a sine wave output, but closer examination (on a scope) showed it was actually a series of square waves. The result was: it did not do well with certain motors on power equipment. This characteristic is typical of several low cost generators. Therefore, I'm asking.
@rkwill1004 жыл бұрын
@@VictorSilva-rq4kz please read: Which states: "Standard, construction grade generators produce a stepped wave that will destroy anything that needs a clean sine wave. An Apex would be ruined in short order. Controllers for pumps, same story. Your microwave oven or computer won't run on one either. Honda's i series have inverters, correcting the wave form to a true sinusoidal wave. Yamaha has there own series. I've owned both and they're excellent. They're also much quieter and more efficient. The Honda I have now runs 4 hours before needing a refill. "
@VoluntaristSociety4 жыл бұрын
@@rkwill100 its not possible to produce a square wave if it isn't an inverter generator. The lowest cost of the low, budget chinese generator will have pure sine wave if it doesn't have an inverter. Non inverter generators spin at a fixed RPM regardless of load.

During assembly, they sometimes do not assember the auto choking feature and it will not work properly without it. There are numerous videos online that can show you how. It would start and smoke (because its on full choke) and then die. It took about 10 minutes to fix, but It was disappointing. I did overload it accidentally trying to run the AC, Electric water heater and microwave, without thinking. I just reset it and worked fine afterwards. Hi Steve, Propane produces fewer BTUs per gallon of fuel then gasoline and natural gas is even less. Power is as follows: Gasoline 100%, Propane 90%, Natural Gas 80%. So you loose 10% from propane and 20% of power from natural gas compared to straight gasoline. As far as the RPM's. I know my Generac EXL7550/13500 portable generator requires (as per Generac) to set the RPM'S To 3750 no load, the volts to 125v no load, and HZ 62.5 No load. Again, as per the service manual. The reason I believe is when the generator is under load it will be pretty much at the standard 3600 rpm and so on which is required to keep things running properly. Please keep your videos coming.

Propane has fewer btu's per unit than gas does.. Fewer btu's means less power. The engine rpm does not indicate the power available. As you well know you can run and v8 engine at 2000 rpm even if it is missing on one cylinder and you can run a v8 engine at 2000 rpm that is firing on all cylinders. Even though the rpm is the same the power available is not. Rpm does not necessarly= power. Thanks for all the good information your channel provides. I have learned a lot. I never know there were so many good beers out there.

Steve, I believe gasoline has a higher energy content than propane that is why generators have a lower rating on propane. Similarly if you run your car on propane it will have less horse power. By the way, the Westinghouse Gen looks suspiciously like my Firman Gen. When I picked up my Firman at Costco I did some research on the brand and Firman is a Chinese manufacturer that actually builds small engine equipment and they are highly rated. I have been very happy with the Firman. It is a 9500W (on gasoline) for $649 at Costco. Firman actually builds the units for many other "manufacturers".

I own a very similar "PowerHorse" brand (sold by Northern Tools) pressure washer. I paid about $50 USA more than the Westinghouse, and it came with a totally different pump that has an oil fill / level check dipstick and a drain. The plastic hose is a pain to coil and uncoil, but livable. Same Chinese-made 212cc Honda-Clone engine. I'm very happy with mine. THREE SUGGESTIONS: first, change out the spark plug with your favorite USA / Japan / German made plug as the originals can be of poor quality. Second, the engine works REALLY HARD and gets REALLY HOT - I've measured crankcase temps over 100 deg C on mine in the heat of summer. I'd highly recommend a very high quality synthetic engine oil. THIRD - change after the first hour (to get the wear-in particles out) and then frequently after that. If you can change the oil in your pump, do the same with the pump! (it uses a different oil than the engine, so check your manual.) Oil is cheap! I'm very happy with mine, especially having gotten it on sale for just under $300. I've probably got 10 hours on it at this point in time. I also own a Westinghouse iGen2200 inverter generator. While totally different being a "suitcase" style generator...I think it's similar good-for-the-price point level of quality. It's run everything I've thrown at it up to full rated load. Mine had a metallic ringing noise which I found was a slightly over-length starter pawl in the recoil touching the cup on the flywheel. Three licks with a file and it's gone, although took me about an hour to get in there, figure it out, and replace everything. Same three suggestions as above - replace the original plug, use a good oil, and change the oil after the first hour and then frequently after that. Even with the starter pawl "ringing" the flywheel, I'm very happy with mine. I've put probably 25 hours on mine at this point.

I keep it on a trickle charger to maintain the battery and start it every month or two. The 6500W peaks at 7500W surge. I'm able to power my whole house in outages. Of course I'm careful about which circuits I use during those outages, but it powers my boiler, refridge, a freezer and sump pump along with all lights and such. If my wife wants to cook, I shut off the fridge or freezer or both temporarily. I ended up buying another for my daughter and her husband for their house.

Over the years and having used and maintained a lot of different pressure washers, I always have a look at the pump, first thing. I prefer a CAT pump. The darn things are just the best! Expensive, I know but they last and repair on them isn't too bad. What I have found is that 3500 psi @3.5 gpm is about the best that the average guy will need, in a cold water unit. It will peel even heavy grease off of concrete fairly well. What really wrecks these units is running them over 2 minutes with the nozzle closed. At those pressures, the heat build up is almost instant! Pretty much destroys the bypass valve. To avoid this problem you would have to go to a very expensive commercial unit. Personally I wouldn't buy one with less than 3500psi@3.5 gpm, or something close to that but it depends on what your needs are.

I feel it makes less electrical power on propane because it'll probably de-power the unit while running propane and will likely produce less horsepower than running gasoline (my opinion) however the versatility of being able to use dual fuels outweighs the lower electrical power output while on propane. It still starts first or second pull every time on pull rope. I have a 30 amp generator panel 10 circuit box that runs most of the outlets in my house and will has no problem running my gas furnace in the winter. It gets run at least 4 times a year or more due to Southern Thunder storms and an occasional tropical systems. What I meant to lead with but got sidetracked is I have a GenTent which is rated to withstand a Cat1 Hurricane winds and rain. The highest wind we have had has been 70mph gust with 50mph sustained and both the Generator and the GenTent perform well. The old generator due to its size is not near as fuel efficient as the model you demonstrated but I agree with your rating on their generator.
@holmiumh3 жыл бұрын
It's really down to two things: 1, Stoichiometric Combustion Ratio: The ideal air/fuel ratio for propane is about 6% leaner, that means there's simply less chemical energy per combustion, air/fuel ratio is set by the carburetor. 2, Engine optimization: In an overly simplified explanation, we are running propane in an engine designed for gasoline here, some power and efficiency are sacrificed in the process. But hey, if you put gasoline in a propane engine you get a bomb so.....
@professionalidiots1014 жыл бұрын
I think the outputs from propane are typically less than petrol when under load on most things. I bought a Westinghouse generator a year or so ago. Used it for one week and it completely stopped producing power. They sent out some new receptacles for me to replace, and that wasn’t the issue.. sent new AVR and brush. Also wasn’t the issue. I was told to take it to a service shop affiliated with Westinghouse because it sounds like a internal engine problem. Only thing is, there aren’t any service shops affiliated with them in my city.. so I was basically stuck with a brand new generator that can’t be used.

Oh come on! Three things. Those low oil shut offs are prone to failure, and that's fun when you need the damn thing. Another Great video.

I had a brand new, top of the line Generac die after maybe 6 hours due to a bad oil sensor. Fixed under warranty, and running smooth since 2005, but it was down for a month. Later, I had a pressure washer die for same reason. I unplugged the oil sensor, and it's running great years later. I do check the oil level from time to time. Sometimes, a feature is nice, but not really needed. Realistically, if your 6.5 HP motor stopped splashing oil, you would just buy a new motor or pressure washer, not go inside the engine to fix the problem. Especially when a new engine is only $99 from Harbor Freight Tools.

I was disappointed you didn’t comment on the engines. Who makes them. Do they have plastic carbs? Are the cams and other internal parts plastic.

In 2013 Costco was selling the 7000 Watt blue Westinghouse gas generator for $700. I bought it, have had no trouble with it, I start it monthly and it starts right up. My town has very few power outages so have not had to really use it. Looks the same but has no outlet covers. It came with a 25' power cord.

Like the ones that are tri-fuel. Great for home use. Also you can get a new regulator and be able to convert it to tri-fuel.

Regarding the generator, does it make too much noise for an RV park? I was looking at this model, but when I asked about it on one of the RV forums I belong to, I was told it was way too noisy. What do you think?

First time viewer. All I can say is awesome video Steve. I'm getting ready to buy a generator and thanks for not making me watch every tiny aspect of you running this generator. You cut all the right corners on this video just straight and to the point. I already have the pressure washer and it runs great love it! Thanks again for the run down and not making me sit through a drag out.

Hi Steve, I really would like to see you do a video with the generator using residential natural gas which has about the same WC (7" to 10" water column) pressure. So just plumbing a hose downstream from a house gas meter (like maybe a gas clothes dryer connection) into the dual fuel (propane) regulator on the generator. Reason being, in natural disasters and power outages natural gas supply is usually unaffected and more importantly "infinite" supply relative to gasoline and propane. Also realize that full power output on natural gas will likely be yet again less than propane due to BTU difference in the two fuels so maybe 4500 watts? But not having to worry about the fuel supply in my mind makes up for this. Oh yeah, and natural gas will be a lot cheaper than gasoline & propane per kilowatt generated too.
@jimpikul85514 жыл бұрын
That is if you can get it off the street. I was told by two different gas mechanics that I could not do that. I have gas boiler, stove, water heater and dryer. Sure , not all things would run at same time, but geez!
@hvac4u24 жыл бұрын
You'd need a manufacturer specified conversion kit IF possible at all to run it on Natural gas. A little more complicated than changing a pressure regulator...
@jagardina4 жыл бұрын
Propane has less BTUs per volume than gasoline, all the dual fuel gens have lower power output with propane. Also the speed will affect the frequency of the sine wave (AC) that it puts out. So it might be interesting to see what the frequency is being output. Some equipment won't be happy if it's not close to 60Hz.

Always test a generator under load. Do a 15-20 minute routine run every month or so. Plug in a couple of hair dryers. I have a 5500w and I try to run it close to max with 3 hair dryers. My brother-in-law has a 7500w that he ran for 4 days straight, never changed the oil (normally recommended every 25 hours) and it's been sitting now for 3 years. When he needs it and it won't run, I'll offer him $100 for it.

I have been using my Westinghouse for about 6 months now. It runs about 4 hours a day, 2 in the morning , 2 in the evening. I have run it about 10 hours a day when it was hot out.I am boondocking. It's been good, but now I am having eradict power fluctuations, with the generator taking a couple of minutes to actually start supplying power. A total of 5 months of use and it looks like it's not going to make the end of the season which is in another month.

I have a question for ya --- I have a westing house generator - 3600DF....It has been stored for a year inside garage and started it today with a jump from my truck and some starter fluid ... well she started up and ran for an hour really good ....Theeeennnn it started making horrible air leaking hissing noise super loud , so i shut it off , tried to restart it on its own battery but it was dead big time too .....WTF was that air leaking hissing noise ? Have you ever heard of that ? sounded like a air compressor hose rupture noise .....anyways thats my question , Bought it brand new and this thing is a year old and trying to get it to work .....Thanks

The soap storage on the psi washer is very neat, never seen that before! I have an option for that on my craftsmen but you have to find a way to mount the chemical and such it's not plug and play like that one. On another note, I don't think my craftsmen (similar size) has the oil shut down on the motor, the sight glass or psi adjuster. Think that's all on the higher grade psi washers.
@eosjoe5654 жыл бұрын
I just wish they would make the soap tanks easier to remove so you could rinse them out after each use. Soap can dry in there and clog the line. Some pressure washers have a soap reservoir tank and a siphon tube so you have the option to draw from a gallon jug of detergent.

just went through hurricane Ian and I have a gasoline only model and I've run over 100 gallons through it so far and it's worked flawlessly. other than the pull start is too hard for my wife to turn it on without the electric start would be my only complaint great generator tighten the bolts after use because vibration will make a lot of the motor mounts and whatnot loosen
