This video is a review of the Lutterloh pants pattern found in supplement 306.
For size reference, my waist measures at 35 inches. My butt measures at 42 inches.
I have received some advice on how to fix the short crotch, and I do plan to do another video using the same pattern to sew some shorts using the adjusted pattern to see if the crotch problem can be fixed.

Good for you attempting a not-so-easy garment as a novice. Nobody mentioned the front crotch winkles that NEVER should point to that part of your anatomy. That needs some adjustment but the fit across your bum looks great. Also a big tip is to press your seams after you sew them for a guaranteed professional, not- homemade look. Keep going. Practice does make perfect.

Practice does help. Sewing has a learning curve. Pressing between steps is crucial.

One great tip I learned in bra-making -which has lots of little bits- is to use tiny different coloured dot stickers to keep pieces labeled and to help with matching up seams. With larger items you can use post-its, tape, different types of pins. Try not to worry about sewing mistakes. If they still fit and flatter I often leave them in now, so I can “prove” that I make my own fabulous clothes.

Something I never understood about sewing pants is why every book, every video, every commercial pattern has you sew the front panel to the back panel first, then join the two at the crotch. You’re right, that does get confusing. So I just do it my way. I sew the two fronts together first at the crotch, or the “J” so you have the front two pieces as one. Do the same for the back pieces, the lay the front and back right sides together to sew down the sides and then sew the inseam.

I have been sewing for over 55 years and I have NEVER put together a pair of pants the way the pattern companies would have you do it. Just so stupid and a very easy way to make mistakes. Also when constructing a blouse they say sew the side seams and then insert the sleeve. Nope...flat construction is the only way to go.

I always sew the crotch first and then sew the side seams. Just do it the way you think it makes sense for you.

❤Every pattern you put together, you will learn something new. Never give up. It may not be perfect, but you actually did a nice job. New sewing projects can be intimidating at first. Just take your time and go step-by-step. You will get it tovwhere you know yourvown tricks. It just takes practice.

finally an honest review! i was thinking about getting a kit but i am new to sewing. This made me decide to wait till i am more advanced before attempting trying to sew garments with out proper instructions. It seems great to make your own patterns but if your new to sewing i can already feel the frustration. Esp with the cost of fabric and the cost of the kit. thank you for making up my mind.

You did great. The back is perfect. I bought a system called Sewing the American Way years ago and it was designed the same way. I had forgotten how to use it. This refreshed my memory so I'll try it.

I think that the waist band is the same as the rest of the system! Measure to 80 from one end of the pattern with the waist measurement pin in place and it would have added the extra you put in! But also, this was so lovely and I’m going to make the same ones this weekend!

Hi! I love how you show your mistakes, after all we all make them! I just got my Lutterloh system a month ago, and from what I understood, the "ca" is approximately, so it's ok to add or subtract from that measurement. Thanks for sharing your experiences! The pants are pretty!

I like the way the pants fit you. You did great with the pattern. I did notice from your video that you don’t really know how to sew pants together (the order and placement of the pieces) and that may have contributed to your frustration. I do hope you make more pants, these fit you so nine. I’m one of those people who gets the weird gap in the back. Just watch a random pant tutorial video ( Mimi G style comes to mind) and you see what I mean. There is an order in which pants should be sewn. Good luck, you did great!

Omg, I had the same issue sewing the lutterloh shorts. It was all user error. Since I also did a plain fabric (no print), I lost track of the "right sides". I ended up using embroidery placement stickers to keep track.

Unfortunately in my Lutterloh kit there are no instructions for anything so you have to have sewing knowledge to use the system. But you did a great job with trial and error...You might want to check out some of the online sewing schools....that's what I did. Mimi G has a great one that I'm still in at the moment...I also looked into the beginner sewing school from " Sew Over It" All the sewing schools are really affordable, Mimi G's in 9.00 a month and you work at your own pace. She is a great teacher too..I have learned so much with these courses and have worked my way from beginner to intermediate now...check them out, I think you'd like them.

For someone who doesn't sew pants very often the Lutterloh method was an excellent choice! I would recommend that if you want to sew another pair, the crotch needs a bit of adjusting. I'd add about 1/2" to the "Rise" and they will fit a lot better. That was one measure that the Lutterloh system seems not to use and yet that is so important. Take your tape measure and run it from where you want the waist to sit down through your legs and where you want the pant waist to be in the back. That is the amount of the rise. Or measure the "rise" in a pair of your pants that fits well and doesn't give you "camel toe" when you stand straight. You are doing very well with your sewing so I sure wouldn't be discouraged in any way. The first pair of pants that I made were pajama bottoms and I can't tell you how many times I had to rip out the seems as I got the legs mixed up!! My mother, who was an excellent seamstress and pattern designer, had me chalkmark all the fronts which helped me get the pieces in the right places. I like to repeat a pattern almost right away if it is a wardrobe staple, so I can incorporate all my notes where I maybe went wrong or could make it easier for the next pair to come together. For pants and jackets, I've gone to a stretch lining and I've found it more comfortable. Keep up the good work and let us see your next project! It's refreshing to see sewing as it really is instead of like a TV show where it all comes together without a hitch.

First, sew the two back pieces together, then sew the two front pieces together, then bring them together by sewing the inseam, and lastly, sew the two outer seams.

Which pant pattern is right for you? This depends on what you want. Do you like wearing loose pants? Or rather tight ones? For which occasion are you sewing? Do you want your pants for sleep wear? Do want want to wear it at home? Or at work? Or for sports? Or only on special occasions? For all these cases you will probably need separate patterns. You said you were so mad about the pyjama pants. But i have to say for sleep wear these pyjama pants are perfect. The loose fit is intentional for sleep wear. If you want to use a pyjama pattern for day wear, then you might use 1 or 2 sizes smaller. The Lutterloh pants fit you perfectly, they are quite snug in the waist and hip area, this looks very good on you. However I could imagine that the pants become uncomfortable after some hours of wearing. And the wrinkles in the front could mean that the front crotch is a little bit too short. But nevertheless these pants look great on you. :-)

The system assumes you have a basic knowledge of pattern construction. Ike everything else one needs to do a mock up and tweak before cutting. You should also take other measurements of your waist an crotch length just to be doubly sure. Even when you draft your own pattern you might have to make adjustments just before sewing.
@sandioney4761
@sandioney4761 Жыл бұрын
Why didn't you make a muslin first? I've learned to ALWAYS do that in fabric close to what I'm going to make whatever clothing item from. Then I know which adjustments to make. Takes a little longer, but then you have a pattern you can keep & reuse

I have never used a body form before. They are a bit expensive for me. I'm also unfamiliar with using a body form for pattern drafting. It looks fun though! I might try it inthe future, but for now I'll stick with Lutterloh patterns 😁

I must say that you did a good job besides your little hiccups. Next time, you start from the crotch first and pin/sew to the waist. Sew either one first. But, you'll end up with a different look
