DNAlien Absolutely! The themes they mentioned are still in that film (Oogie’s a big guy, too, after all), and the point about the authority figure being a two-faced coward still fits the tropes.
@nokaroundgy86745 жыл бұрын
Casey Miller That may be true, but I was really just pointing out that the mayor, while a two-faced coward, is not the villain of the film as was stated in this conversation. I think Oogie isn’t as fleshed out as he could have been as a villain, but I think he’s still kind of fun.

I loved this trailer and this commentary so much. Burton is honestly one of my favourite directors working today even though his movies are a lot more hit and miss than they were in the 80s/90s. As an autistic guy I also can’t help but think he is himself on the spectrum, Edward Scissorhands is the perfect allegory of what it’s like to grow up autistic in a society that feels alienated by you (I wrote my Master’s dissertation on this 😂), and those interviews Dan talked about reveal details about his upbringing that share parallels with a lot of autistic people (including me). He’s probably one of the only proper auteur filmmakers working within the studio system and we should be grateful for that. As much as Planet of the Apes or Alice in Wonderland suck, Burton at his best (Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Sweeney Todd etc.) will always trump any of his failures. Keep giving him money, Hollywood, that’s what I say.
@howlerbat40405 жыл бұрын
so glad you guys didn't go the 'easy way', I was going into that honest trailer half expecting jokes about never-changing cast, hot topic, weird trees and so on but was pleasantly surprised that you actually did your homework and put much more insightful stuff in there. Tim's movies were always very appealing to me because he never takes on a project he has no personal connection to, all of his films are actually pretty personal and all his themes and influences are very transparent to someone who knows where to look
@ryanellis17085 жыл бұрын
I really like Lon's point about how Burton probably just wants to work and getting any kind of budget means taking on a less-than awesome project. It reminds me of a key line in Bull Durham, where Susan Sarandon talks about the romance and beauty and mysticism in baseball, but it's also a job. Well, filmmaking is also a job. Sometimes it isn't about the art. Sometimes it's just about the process and that isn't always inspiring. Also, fully agreed that Big Fish is very moving, especially the ending. Best Burton: I love Batman, but Ed Wood is his "best" movie.

My favourite movie of his is probably Sleepy Hollow. I think it’s the best use of his visual style at its most hard-edged. I think Johnny Depp is great as Crane, i like the whole creepy small town setting, the action is really good, the horse riding scenes are some of the best ever shot (the speed of Horseman!), the effects are great... the Headless Horseman is legitimately scary, especially when he has Christopher Walken for a head. Lots of great actors in the movie. I think it’s a great take on the classic tale. The mystery and Crane’s investigation unfolds really well. It’s an under-rated movie, IMO, and probably my favourite Halloween movie.

Big Fish is definitely my favorite Tim Burton film, and probably just one of my favorite overall films. I think it has so far really marked the apex of Burton's career as I feel it's been pretty downhill from there. The Corpse Bride was fine, Sweeney Todd was fine. But just about everything else hasn't been great. I can understand the argument that studios only wanting to give him the money to make movies based on existing properties is part of it. It's just like studios capitalizing on Burton's style, and it really shows. From what I've heard, Planet of the Apes being the trash pile it was was largely due to bureaucracy as well. They movie we got was not the one they wanted to make.
