It is clearly most similar to the latter part of the Dark Phoenix Saga with the aliens and Jean “destroying” things and having her friends trying to decide on what to do about the problem. It is also a very bad adaptation of that part of the Saga. It is a very bad movie, in my, and the Screen Junkies crew’s, opinion.

There is concept art for them online and the cast/crew said the film was based on the Hellfire Club arc long before it came out. The villains were changed to Skrulls at the last minute in an attempt to use them before Marvel. Also Jean “destroyed” things long before she became Dark Phoenix in the comics. It is a part of her origin story. I recommend reading X-Men Origins: Jean, which the film is also based on. Lastly, Jean was only Dark Phoenix for two issues in the comics. The story was never about fighting her. The X-Men don’t even learn about what she did until after they beat her.
