I have a golf V and a golf VII and never had a check engine light, I am starting to think that even that part is just engineered to be decent

I can relate to that. Change from Vento (Jetta III) to Volvo S60 was a downgrade in a bunch of ways...

@Steven g yes. And for clarity, I mean S60 I from 00-04. For example Vento (1200+ kg) was way more agile in the city conditions (slow speeds) than S60 (1500+ kg) - change to Volvo felt like I'm suddenly driving around 2500 kg of a car. Quality of interior was also in favor of Vento (GL version) - it had much nicer and durable materials. And last but definitely not least: despite both cars being praised by mechanics for amazing shape considering their age (15-20 years around the time when i drove each of them), Vento was working like a charm despite being kept on a street and treated much harder on a road. S60, which is constantly garaged and I'm now much calmer driver, had several issues that Vento didn't at similar age: malfunction of alternator, accelerator, dashboard dials, engine seals. I'm only picking few issues that could be common for both cars and other issues wouldn't happen in Vento, because it was much simpler car. Volvo has some problem literally every summer.

@@code_sculptorSorry, but i want to "protect" my favourite car company. So if you don't want to read how one hell of an ass guy grumble about how cool Volvo's are, you can do it. Have a nice day! So, as an past owner of S60 1st gen, S40 2nd gen, and S60 2nd gen i can only say that your car was not maintain properly by previous owners. Volvo's 5 cyl are amazing and reliable. But if you throw away car manufacturer recomendations to Change Oil, Filters and other in 12.000km every time, engine will not feel good. B5244S (i bet it's your engine, cause it's most popular for 1st gen S60) and other Volvo's 5 cyl are very, VERY sensitive to Overheat. If you do this even once, next morning you will hear a Subaru sound from your bonnet :( Turbo's can only make up to 250k km (155k miles), piston group would be fine, engine block too. For interior. I did not sit in Venta, only in Golf 4, but how is Venta's interior is better iyo? Volvo has soft, premium materials and great assembly quality. Especially the old once like S60 1st gen. Even leather seats looks good after 150k km (around 90-100k miles) And for the "i feel like I'm suddenly driving around 2500kg of a car" Of course it would be like that. S60 is bigger and heavier than Jetta (or Venta), it's like a nice boat, that will run your ass from A to B with comfort and safety. Look at the door and it's width! It will save your ass, when a lady in a Nissan Juke, forgot where the brake pedal is. Want more quirky? Buy an S60R or an S40 (it has one of the best handling in Class, idk for USA model, but for European, it's unbelievable good.) Sorry again for that, just as an Volvo owner and fan, it's broke my heart when people drive on a bad maintained cars, and describe problems of they cars like for all of them. Have a nice day! And for your Volvo too (if you didn't sell it by this day :D)

When my mother owned a Passat, they were actually really nice little cars. Very, very reliable and fuel economic. Volkswagon were also amazing when they came to fixing an issue on her car, which they not only fixed, but also threw in a little performance tuning/upgrade to go with it. GTIs are also great. Yes.

My ex wife had a VW and her check tire light was always on. She was in charge of a maintenance company and they would make fun of her for it. I told her I would get her all new tires and rims for her birthday and she said would divorce me of I did.
