Nothing did more to steer me away from fraternities than talking to people in fraternities. All I heard was complaining about how expensive it was and how they're treated like a slave for the first year. Yet the idea of _not_ being in a fraternity never occured to them.
@sageoftruth Жыл бұрын
Leaving isn't easy. They make you sacrifice so much for it, that it makes leaving very difficult. Time, money, effort. Not only would a member have to face the harshness of all that being a waste, but they'd also have to give up all the conditional friendships they made and learn to venture out into a world without a large group of people who will like them as long as they conform. It's a cult basically, and cult's aren't easy to leave. Leaving is a bit like leaving a village somewhere in the desert and hoping you'll find something out there before you starve. When making friends there is so easy, it makes finding a replacement social life outside of it seem so daunting.

I had a roommate who joined a sorority - didn't understand it. Never did - they kept waking us up at 4am for nothing. I still don't get it - a decade later. Now roger lets us know it's for sexism - by women - thank you for letting me avoid that one!

I’ve never understood why they called it “Greek Life” at my, and other universities. Most of the ppl in the frats and sororities weren’t Greek for one, it seemed time consuming (more than college itself), and expensive. And old friend of mine joined a sorority she’d been wanting to for a long time. She told me that during her induction period, she was sworn to never speak about what her and other inductees experienced as that would “strengthen their sisterhood bonds”. She would just say that there was some heavy stuff or a lot she went through.

Remember,kiddos,do NOT under any circumstance allow your peers to determine who you are in anyway. And especially don't join these cult like establishements who have long gone past their usefulness outside of being money makers.

Unlike a lot of honest ads, I think most people already suspected a lot of these facts. They seem to look at whether your parents are wealthy and expect you to go to college to network and get business/political connections. Those would be the good recruits. Better than a lot of cults, I guess, targeting wealthy people is a different spin

After this honest commercial I see it even more clearly how fraternities and sororities are fundamental in the education of a young adult to become a fully functional adult in society (that is, one that acts as a mindless zombie at the disposal of this or that power group or in-group)

I don't know if it's still true but, there was a time you only got a job in the business world if you belonged to certain fraternities.

"Hi, I'm Roger and I'm from Honest Ads and...I'm not even Roger, he's just a character I play because some lazy writers decided Roger Horton sounded better than my actual name." [Roger] "Wait, what's your actual name?" [dude] "Ope, don't spoil everything for everyone sweetheart....anyway, we here at Honest Ads, or maybe Roger Explains...no? Okay Honest Ads? ok...well, we summarize random topics in the most snarky and cynical manner possible because we know that you, the viewer, thanks to your upbringing and...perhaps some psychology, equate cynicism and snark to being intelligent and honest, and your waning attention span doesn't give you time to hear and watch anything more nuanced." [Roger] "Yes we can." [chick] "Oooh look a 15 facts about Dentists. Number 8 will SHOCK you!" [dude] ~chick rolls eyes at dude~ "See? Anyway, because of this, nothing seems to work better for attention than slapping Honest in front of something and you will believe it! Which is weird because my brother John couldn't get anywhere with his car dealership." ~chick and dude look questioningly, Roger makes a verbal backspace~ "....oh, but I digress, don't I? Anyway, I say all these things not just in a snarky manner, but as if I had come up with them myself, when instead I'm just acting some lines some underpaid writer had to come up with, when I'm sure some of you could've done it for free. Meanwhile I get a fairly nice check and all I have to do is put on tacky clothes to fit the theme at no expense" "You mean you don't have wardrobe full of cool things?" [dude] "Well....maybe I do, maybe I don't. But these aren't mine. See, there you go again believing everything I say just because I said it in a snarky, cynical, or "down-to-earth" sort of way, or maybe your just doing what some professionals call, confirmation bias. Where you just look for any sort of thing you doubt about it and the first negative you see...boom...Honest!" [Roger] "Hey, I look up most of these facts after I watch an ad" [chick] "But do you? Really" [Roger] Ok, I'll stop there, because I'm not paid for this and I'm already bored, someone else can finish this, or not.

At the college I attended, there was a sorority that had the pledges dress the same, had to walk arm in arm with another pledge, holding in front of them their pledge book for all to see with a big smile plastered on their faces. At the time I thought it was comical, now I realized it was just plain creepy.

I was in a German fraternity and let me tell you one thing: The US ones are like easy mode compared to ours. If you want fencing with sharp blades, commiting burglary as a weekly activity and play cat and mouse with the state authorities, join a German fraternity. There's also binge drinking and partying and all that stuff as well.

Fraternities and Sororities were originally more like clubs, then they turned into a cult during modern times
@LamborghiniDiabloSVPursuit Жыл бұрын
The only people I've ever seen enjoy being in fraternities are the rich, or the kids who thought they were rich until their parents' pipeline dried out. Everyone else were the social awkward kids trying to make friends and got preyed on by frats, and are basically treated like second-rate mules.
