Yes, "Memento Mori," is the exact message everyone sees which reminds us of our mortality and death coming due. Yikes. That's the very topic most people are so uncomfortable about. One whole lecture was devoted to the Orloj, it's mechanisms and history (and why it didn't work or didn't work correctly for the most of it's existence). To pass the exam (besides other requirements) you had to be able to read all four times from the Orloj and explain them.

Here is my guess: The slunce is in Capricorn Zodiac so it's winter. The zodiac ring is divided into 72 elliptic curves each curve being about 5 days. From the first picture, it seems late December. The second picture shows that it's David's day, so the date is December 30th and I guess the year is 2020. Sunset is around 16:05 (aligning of Roman number 4 and Arabic number 24) The current local time is around 17:10. (Golden hand on Roman numerics, upper XII is 12:00 noon, lower XII is 12:00 midnight) Old bohemian time is around 1:05 (Golden hand on Arabic numerics) Babylonian time is around 10:55 or 11:00 (hand on the blue section and black numerics) Star time is around 23:55 (Golden star on Roman numerics, upper XII is 12:00 midnight, lower XII is 12:00 noon)

Thank you for explaining how to read the astronomical clock. It is a true work of art and mechanical design. You are right, people who designed this clock are smarter than me. I remember being amazed by the Astro growing up in Prague, it was the most complicated thing ever. I managed to work out how to read the kalendar dial, but not the astronomical dial, so thank-you. When I was a child I thought the noise at 7:47 was because the windows needed oiling, but later found out that it's supposed to be an imitation of a cock crowing (does that make it a cuckoo clock?). The apostles actually look quite ugly up close, but they're designed to be seen from below & at a distance with the most advanced mathematical perspective of the day, probably one of the first times it was used outside Italy. St John's Day is the opposite of Christmas. This actually has a symbolic meaning derived from John 3:30.

It is indeed amazing. Just to think of the complexity and the engineering and knowledge and understanding of the celestial behaviour that went into this is outside of most of peoples capacity today. I am wondering how many people can really explain the whole mechanics at all today without having to look up most of the details. Also, honestly, who would actually need that information anyway. This picture was taken on December 30th, 2020. Which is in the Capricorn Zodiac. Sun set will be at Dusk with a Full moon. It is in the 5:00 hour. since there is no minute hand it's difficult to figure out the minutes. I am going to go with 5:02, since there is not Apostles, they take about 30 seconds to cycle, in the windows so it is past 5:00, but with the hand where it is it could be anywhere between 5:01-5:10 depending on what angle you are taking the picture in. The star time is 6:00, and the Babylonian time is 1. Also the name day is Davida! (I think I am spelling that right. The words are so tiny, but that gave me a for sure that it's the 30th.)

Interesting is also stone decoration round the dials. Upper dial has around creatures. From sunset to dawn there are "evil" creaures of the night: cat-demon-bat-hedgehog-frog. For day, good creatures: lamb and dog. Lower dial has around circle of vine, which changes as seasons of the year are passing. Balcony on the left has bottom decorated with (rasp)berries in different stages of growth. It was all in color back that time when the clock was built. And I must not forget to mention the skeleton statue, which is symbol of vanitas, transience of time.

Hello, Honza and Janek! If you are explaining it correctly, you are filming this around 21st of December, when Sagitarus turns to Capricorn (assuming the clocks go right way). The sun is shortest there to match long nights and short days as you explain. The tricky part is with the photo. The moon is completely dark and the date is around Silvestr/New year date. Novum of Moon was 30th of December 2020 and as long as I assume it was taken by you this year, it suits the best for that day. Trouble is with time of the day - the golden hand rests exactly on 5PM, but at this part of the year it should definitely be dark around and I am in doubts that the lights around are so bright that it wouldn´t be seen. But everything fits, so my tip: 30th December 2020, 5PM :)

December 30th 2020, 17:11. The golden hand indicates slightly past 17 o clock, with the outer ring of bohemian time indicating just over 1H past sunset (16:09 on the 30th), so the time is 16:09+1H+a few minutes = 17:11. This is reinforced by the sun being in the red area on the face, indicating it is past sunset. The date can be seen on the bottom face: December 30, David’s nameday. This matches the zodiac signs in the small circle of the top face, which indicates the first half of Capricorn (21-12 to 19-1) and the fact that the sun is rather low on the big hand, which also indicates winter. The date also matches the last full moon of 2020: the moon on the clock clearly indicates a full moon on the day of the photo. I should add though that the sidereal time seems to be incorrect: the actual sidereal time at 17:11 on December 30 2020 is 00:47, NOT the 11:47 the star is showing. In the summer it would be off by an additional hour due to summertime, so I have no idea where this difference is coming from. As it is, the clock is indicating Greenwich sidereal time, which would be of very little use in Prague.
