I'm 78 years old and I Trained on the 38 spl S&W 6 shot Revolver> I became extremely good with this Platform! I then went to a Glock 19 which became my Duty Weapon for 15 years as an Armed Security Officer. I was also Trained as a K-9 Officer and had a K-9 with me in my Patrol Vehicle! As I became Older, about 76 years old, I had some physical problems in my Hands and Feet, which precluded Me from handling large caliber guns so I switched to the 22LR/22 Mag Platform. I shoot once every week and I am A Member of an Indoor Range/Outdoor range here in Sunny Florida! I Now shoot better than I ever have and I carry A 22LR or A 22 Mag Gun for my Self defense! At my age, I feel good about being able to defend myself But I am Grateful that I Never had to use my Weapon to Defend Someone or Myself! Thank You and Stay Safe, God Bless You!

I picked up a very slightly used TX22 a few weeks ago. First 22 I've had in years. Wasn't expecting much due to it being a Taurus and my past with them. I bought three 325 round boxes of Federal. It came with a 16 round mag and two 16 rounders with +4 extensions on them. Went through about 750 rounds the other day and had a blast. Zero issues. I was shocked.

I remember a VERY LONG time ago K Mart would run a Blue Light Special on bricks of 22, $4.77 for 500 rounds. And it was decent ammo, it was quite rare to see any malfunction in my old 10/22, even more rare to get a failure to fire.

If you choose semi auto make sure it’s double action. Gives you the ability to double tap it or more to get it to fire… if not grip and rip. Load the next one in. Which is super easy with the sr22. 90 year old with arthritis can rack one. Why I chose the SR22 Ruger… 👍

Yhe best part of the sr22 that tandemkross makes kits to turn the ten round magazines into 15 and I have mine done and they worked perfectly this is and excellent gun for a ccw there easy to conceal Doble action a very good safty decocker so carrying with a chambered round is much safer and there are alot of holsters on the market and there is a whole host of upgrades on the market mine eats every ammo on the market even the cheap bulk stuff I may get a few missed fires but very few jams and the miss fires you just keep pulling the trigger until it fires but I'm a little careful with this stuff it usually will have no problum but I've gotten a bullet that sounds very loud so I prefer cci ammo.

My wife has very weak hands due to a medical issue. After trying most semi-autos as well as revolvers; she chose the TX22 and loves it. She does not carry it as she is always with me when she leaves the house. It is her home defense gun when I’m out. She is confident in its stopping power as her cousin was shot once in the sternum by a Buckmark from 5 yards, 10 years ago during a weed deal that went bad. While tragic, she knows that it is a lethal round especially using the swarm of bees method which the TX22 is perfect for.

I've had an H&K MP5 .22 for years. My absolute favorite gun of mine to shoot on the range. I never bother to clean it, never jams, shoots like a laser beam. .22lr is very underrated.

Good video! The only thing I can add is something Elmer Keith said a long time ago about a defensive handgun: "Carry the biggest thing you can carry and hit with reliably under any and all circumstances and you won't go wrong." So, I take that to mean is if a .22 is the biggest thing you can handle so be it. Just make sure you can put those rounds where they'll do the most good. Hey, even a .44 magnum is just wasted energy if you can't hit the target!

The Mossad used Beretta 71s in 22lr for up close assassinations. The 71 was also carried by the Israeli Sky Marshals. A 71-armed marshal was credited with ending a skyjacking…against terrorists armed with AK47s. Training, tactics, and sheer balls are more important than caliber selection.

People often disregard the .22lr as a defensive round. they say it doesn't have the "STOPPING POWER" to be a good self-defense round. I don't understand where these thought come from. I've been shot with a .22 lr, and I can tell you IT HURTS!!! Unless the person you're shooting is loaded up on drugs, getting shot with a .22 will make them stop to reassess their plans!

I don't normally carry a 22, but I have. Since buying nothing but CCI several years ago they have been 100% in an LCPII, a Ruger SR22 and even a Phoenix. Good review on the 22.

Funny for me reading your comment. I just bought a LCP II this week. Brand new gun. Shot it 10 times, it misfired (slide didn’t fully return) twice. Was using Remington ammo. Switched to CCI Stingers. Jammed on first shot. Didn’t eject the casing and slammed the next one up against it. Jammed 3 more times in 26 more shots. I just sent it back to Ruger yesterday (the store doesn’t take returns on firearms).

It is absolutely better than a knife or a sharp stick. Lol I used to be a naive naysayer but when I thought about being shot with 22lr I quickly changed my thoughts on the caliber. Those who have trouble dealing with recoil impulses due to injuries or grip strength issues will find 22lr to be quite pleasant. My Taurus TX22 shockingly works great and id rather have my weaker loved ones use that to defend against great bodily harm or death than dialing 911 because "WHEN SECONDS COUNT POLICE ARE JUST MINUTES AWAY"

Haven't read through all the comments but that's why the SR-22 is a good semi-auto with its double strike capability or you have to do is keep pulling the trigger till it goes bang which will happen most times on the second hit plus you can get 13 to 16 rounds in it and it's reasonably small to carry and lightweight

I have many .22’s from 100 year old nail tack driver rifles to new semi-auto’s. The one I trust the most is my ( can’t wait for the negative responses) 30 year old Heritage Revolver with the magnum cylinder. Never had any issues in 10’s of thousands of rounds and I am very confident in its accuracy

I just had ours out at the range a couple days ago running .22lr...we also have the magnum cylinder, and while the gun might not be ideal, 6 rounds of .22wmr might be enough for many situations...one thing never mentioned is the size of the heritage can have the bad guy in his quick glimpse think it is a heavier caliber gun...we don't depend on our heritage these days, but another option always welcome...

"Better than nothing" is a poor expression. Bullets punch holes. The size of the hole is often irrelevant if vitals are damaged, and/or hemmoraging is significant. A .22 is as effective as the shooter makes it...just like any other caliber.

IMHO a .22 semi auto with a laser/flashlight combo is ideal for inside home defense. Low noise, less chance of collateral damage. Low cost allows for more practice too. My 10/22 and S&W Compact are very reliable with Mini Mags. Just as important we use the alarm system and the house is always well lit, inside and out. Thanks for sharing.

Training and quality ammo are great; however, don't forget about maintenance. Because 22 lr ammo is notoriously more dirty than centerfire, you should clean it after every range trip. I can tell you from experience that you can go through 500 or even 1000 rounds of centerfire for a training / competition event without any stoppages, but you'd be hard pressed to make it past 100 - 150 rounds of 22 lr in a semi automatic platform without jamming every other round. Clean that 22 as if your life depends on it; it just might.

Probably one of the better videos on YT about 22lr for self defense. Most don't go as in depth about the caliber itself or the firearm choices. I met an elderly man at the range a few years ago and he had the Ruger SR22, he was having issues with it so we took it apart and cleaned it (cleaning kit in my range bag) and reassembled it. I oiled it up and we shot over 100 rounds with no ftf or fte. It was pretty dirty and apparently he's been shooting it over the last year and a half and has never cleaned it. Said it was his first pistol. I can tell by his hands, he had really bad arthritis so I kind of already knew why he went with that gun and caliber. I let him shoot my M&P9 and he couldn't rack the slide on it so that was a dead giveaway. Upon discussion he had his doubts about the 22lr so I recommended he check out the M&P EZ the next time he's at the gun shop. It was a fun day, but it made me realize at that time, I have to remember some people have limitations so I can't dis someone for their choice of firearm or caliber for self protection without knowing the full story.

I listened to this video with a great deal of interest. I was expecting you to be more negative toward the 22lr. Most of the other videos on this topic are by people who have never given the 22lr serious consideration. I have a Sig p322, Ruger Mark IV Light, S&W 22 mag and a S&W 5.7. Using Federal Punch and CCI Stingers, I have had almost 100% accuracy firing thousands of rounds. I also clean my pistols after every three trips to the range. I am 76 years old and experiencing some hand problems. My current carry guns are a Sig P229 and a Kimber KSD9c. But I am preparing for the day when I may not be able to rack a 9mm. The most helpful thing you said, to me, was about the stopping power of the 22lr. I want to stop my attacked before he kills me. So, I practice making head shots more frequently when I am shooting my 22lr’s. Thanks for the video

Back when I was a kid of 16, about 50 years ago, I owned one pistol. It was a Ruger Mk I Standard Auto with a 4 3/4 inch barrel. I naively loaded it up with CCI Stingers (then new on the market) and told myself I was well defended between plinking sessions. I then got a Mk II in 1983, and to this day, even though it has eaten thousands of them, it has yet to have a malfunction with a Stinger. It also feeds a lot of other things as well. I think if I was stuck with only a .22 pistol for defense, I'd load up that Mk II with some fresh Stingers as well as a spare magazine, and try to put my shots in the face below the brow line. After decades of shooting tiny targets the size of a quarter at distance successfully, I think I could probably pull that off. If I need something for longer distances, I have a nice 10/22 with a very good scope on it that works for me out to 150 yards. Since I'm now a city dweller, I don't worry about anything further out than that.

I carry 22lr for self defense and I can say that I am just as confident that it will function in my S&W M&P 22 Compact as I am in Glock’s that I used to own. I have 2 of these pistols, one for carry (and occasionally at the range) and the other for the range. I have literally never had a malfunction in either and that’s using some bulk ammo, but I mainly shoot CCI. I also have the M&P 15-22 like you do and I had a malfunction in the first magazine I ran but haven’t since. It’s not that I can’t shoot 9mm well or that I have any physical limitations, but I can suppress my 22’s at home and therefore I can practice in more realistic environments and conditions, whereas I am limited to an indoor range for my 9mm’s. Bottom line is that I am confident that it will work when I need it to and that I can get good hits quickly. Thanks for the video.

I also have one of those. It is damn near 100% if you use the right ammo. It likes the hot stuff. CCI mini mags, Aguila Super extra, etc. But my go-to is Federal Auto-Match. I shot an entire 325rd box with not a single failure.

@@DJ.1001 But it's not 100%. I've had my S&W 15/22 since 2009 when they came out. More than 10k rounds. Less than 15k. Probably closer to the latter. Well maintained. Still runs like a raped ape up a tree. I've used 36 gr CCI copper plated rounds designed specifically for AR style .22LR platforms. They've had the highest success rate. Still jams. I'm not grabbing a scoped low powered varmint rifle in the dead of night when I have a Glock 19 with a laser/light combo that has never jammed once.

I have a Ruger LCR 22 lr. It is very reliable and at 25 yards I am more accurate than with my Taurus g 3 c. What I have found is that some brands do not eject as well as others which is critical. CCI works well.

Great points on .22lr! For many years, my home defense consisted of a Marlin 60 and a Remington 1889 12-gauge. I didn't feel unarmed, and I think I would have grabbed the Marlin first. 'Swarm of bees effect' - I like that! Also worth considering are some of the effective .22wmr options. Not as cheap as .22lr, but considerably more powerful, and still permitting very fast follow-up shots right on the button.

I have watched some gel test done with 22lr and I was impressed with the penetration , is it a great ammo for protection no sir it is not. Good video with honest information . I own a few .22 lr firearms and enjoy shooting them .

I have the Taurus TX 22 which I carry and I've had zero problems with it and I use the cci bullets. It's not my only carry gun but it's pretty cool and very dependable I've shot over a thousand rounds through this gun with zero problems + I have 4 16 round magazines

If I was gonna carry .22 it'd be a TX22 with it's 16 round mag full of CCI Stingers. Saw a couple videos where the Stingers outperformed the mini-mags in reliability and penetration. Not trading my 9mm for it but it's a viable option.

You have a much higher chance of shaking loose the primer compound from the rim if you're using .22 as edc. Most folks don't think about this.

Ammo is key. I stumbled upon CCI 22LR Tactical 40 gr plated round nose 1200 fps - at 1800 rounds only 1 failure in my 10/22 and SR22. I've gotten it as cheap as 9 cents with free shipping. The CCI mini Mag 40 gr plated round nose @1235 fps is also good. 300 rounds in the pistol, so far OK. At home, I keep 1 mag in the SR22 with Federal Punch 29gr. Don't ask why, I have no answer. For self defense at home - closest and loaded. Merry Christmas to both of you and the 10 degrees you sent to Georgia has arrived. 🥶

I have a P322 for sport shooting. I've shot hundreds of rounds without malfunction, but I've also seen it malfunction a few times while emptying ONE mag, when someone else was loading. Inspect the mags after loading and make sure the rounds look aligned properly.

Glad you did this video showing the pros and cons of 22LR. I have the M&P 15-22 and TX22. Both are very reliable with all ammo I've used. (Other than CCI Quiet -710fps which is understandable) I love the TX22 so much that I just bought another one for training with my wife and daughter. Lever is the Volquartsen Extractor. It has a super sharp edge for extraction, pretty much eliminating any and all FTEs, as it’ll grab any shell with ease. Chris, must say, one of your best videos. Benefits, the limitations, all the cautions, and more. As for 22LR for training? Fantastic. I hunt a lot. I try to be sharp on my bolt action. I begin with a 22 CZ 457, with a scope like my deer and hog gun. Fundamentals the Army instilled, sight alignment sight picture, breath control, squeeze the trigger, call the shot. Once I am tuned up, then the hunting rifle. Same drill, then different positions. You say it a lot, it is true, fundamentals. They must be sharp and followed. A 22LR is good training, if done right.

Trigger time is trigger time, no substitute for it...what works shooting .22 works in every other caliber...we shoot mass quantities of. 22, and your points do carry over to heavier calibers...

I like that you discuss some of the realistic considerations of self-defense shooting but feel like you should also mention that very often, just being on the receiving end of rounds is enough to make someone nope right tf out. There are a lot of videos of home defense shootings out there, and you'll see that almost every time somebody is breaking in or causing a scene, as soon as shooting starts, they run like crazy. Nobody likes taking rounds, and nobody is an action hero. So there's even another consideration in favor of .22, which is that most of the time, even if you don't put rounds where you want them, even if they don't penetrate the heavy coat, even if they don't put potentially lethal wounds on target, just by virtue of shooting a few rounds at somebody, you've got an extremely good chance of ending the confrontation anyway.

This is the correct line of thinking. Anyone that watches the Active Self protection channel knows that, as soon you start firing on perps, they run 99% of the time. I bet just firing a starters pistol would do the trick most of the time. Also, 22s are more lethal than most people think, for 2 reasons; They are very easy to get shots on target compared to almost anything else. The hand cannon is useless if none of your shots hit the target & even worse if you hit innocents with them. 22 rounds are very painful and a couple shots in the chest cavity will incapacitate a perp pretty fast. I used to drop large hogs with a 22 & they drop like a lead block when hit.

With todays technology, 22 federal punch out of extremely short barrels will still easily penetrate a thick winter coat and clear through vital organs. 22lr has the penetration needed.

First gun I ever owned was a charter arms pathfinder in 22lr with a 3” barrel. I traveled thousands of miles with that revolver. If 22 is the only gun you have and you practice a lot and you use good ammo I have had good luck with it. Now I have a Smith and Wesson pre model 10 5 inch that I inherited and now that’s my main.

I have the .22LR Marlin Model 60. It had never jammed on me after shooting some rounds through it. But that's probably because my stepdad had good .22LR ammo. I have the bulk Winchester .22LR ammo right now, I worry my gun will jam. Winchester is not favorable to me for pistols, cause it jammed my Sig Sauer C3 1911. And my stepdad's Ruger P95 and Ruger SR9c. But it's still a really good rifle. My only complaint really is the bright plastic sights. I don't know why they didn't use steel.

I love .22LR it's my favorite round for all of the reasons you mentioned in the video, BUT for self defense I train with and carry my Sig Sauer 9mm & sometimes carry a small.22 loaded with Federal Punch ammo for a backup gun.

I carry an LCP II in .22 because it fits in my pocket and my job requires me to wear a shirt and tie all day. I feel comfortable in my particular work environment, so I can accept the fact that it's not the most reliable option. Were that to ever change then I'd likely make the switch to pocket carrying an LCP max.

That’s a nice gun. The Keltec P32 is a great pocket gun, too, very reliable, but not as nice as a Ruger for sure. The upside is 32 acp is center fire, the gun costs under 200, and weighs 6.6 oz empty. It’s my back up gun and sweat pants option.

We don't trust our lcp ll 101%, so it is never carried, but it is much better than harsh words...our lightest carry is .22wmr in a revolver, but it is heavier, bulkier than the lcp ll...my brother carries that keltec, says he likes it...on rare occasion the NAA is the best option, and even then .22 has everyone unarmed outgunned...

@@rodneyalaking8241 I'd stick with the P32 as it's a tiny bit smaller but weighs much less than the LCR 22lr. Downside is the extreme differential in ammo prices. The 32 in that tiny barrel will still net you 120 lb-ft of force while the 22 out of the LCR's barrel will get you into the 80s with high velocity ammo. Plus the biggest issue is the 32 round being centerfire has better reliability overall.

I love the video. Lots of great information, but I like to also share my experience with 22LR. Me and my wife have a pair of Browning 1911-22s for both Home Defense and plinking. So far I have tried several types of ammo by a few manufacturers. My handgun was sighted in for CCI Minimag right off the shelve and that one has basically point of aim, point of impact, but I have tried other CCI 22LR with similar results. My Federal rounds have the highest rate of duds (around 5 per 100 rounds) and tend to pull right and down at 7 yards with amazing grouping. I also have a few thousand rounds of Remington Golden Bullet. These rounds rarely have dudes (maybe 1 in every 500), however the amount of powder is inconsistent and I am convinced they add dirt to their powder to make your barrel extra dirty when you fire them. Remington Golden Bullet tend to pull the round down. 22LR is not as unreliable as people claim. Cheapest 9mm ammo is still a lot more expensive than 22LR and has far more malfunctions than 22LR.

I just recently purchased a new Taurus 942. Revolver in 22LR. It was defective out of the box, would not ignite any primers. Sent it back to Taurus, after waiting 3 weeks for an update they finally answered their customer service line. They said the frame was so defective they would need to destroy the firearm and issue me a new one, replacing the serial number. Wait 8 weeks for delivery and I have to do an FFL transfer AND pay for it. Just a heads up.

I've been carrying a Ruger Wrangler in my bag more and more lately. I'd like to have a Glock or 1911, but Massachusetts doesn't like glocks and I can't afford a quality 1911, so this is the best thing I've got for now. But I'm happy to say it's comfortable and easy to use, so I'm more confident having it with me than nothing at all.

The Wrangler satisfies rule #1, have a gun, but i sincerely recommend a double action revolver for .22, there are several models from different manufacturers you might consider...my reasoning is simple, even the best available .22 ammo can go 'click' instead of Bang at the crucial moment...with a double action you simply squeeze the trigger again, the fastest, most natural reaction, and back to back dud rounds would be rare...plus, some of the double action revolvers are chambered for 7,8,9, even 10 rounds (8 seems most common), where a few extra rounds can't hurt...we own a 1911, it has never been carried, simply because of the size/weight of the gun...we have carried a Taurus 942, 8 rounds of .22 magnum (the .22lr version would be equally effective), and felt okay with it...the bright side of the Wrangler is if ever pulled in anger the actual size of the gun gives it the appearance of a .44 magnum (no one studies the size of the bore being actively pointed at them), and the gun would be reasonably accurate...we own a single action, and in a 'pinch' it is nowhere near as fast (or simple) as a double action...

Good info. I am a hard core revolver guy but I am more flexible in .22 rimfire since the brass is virtually useless and the need for high capacity is greater than with 32 and up. The new ammo like federal punch goes a long way toward solving the penetration issues. Premium 22 ammo is still pretty affordable. I also note that the Kel-Tec P17 seems to be garnering a pretty good reputation for reliability.

I know from first hand experience that a 22lr to the head is capable of neutralizing a lot of critters even big ones. I carry 9mm but its hard to argue with the accuracy at distance of a many modern 22lr handguns. They are also getting more reliable all the time and increasing in capacity. Great Video! Great video and thank you for a straight up video. Obviously a 22 is not powerful but it is a great caliber for certain uses. I have a Henry Golden Boy, a Walther p22 and a Ruger Wrangler. People visit me and at first shoot the Mini 14, my Glock 19 or the shot guns and even the Ruger PC Carbine thinking the 22s are wimpy or whatever but the 22s are the fun guns that you can plink all day on steel and they eventually see that (and not see dollar bills flying away with every shot)... I own a Ruger SR 22 and Sig P365 (380). Now I’m no professional so just speaking from experience. I take both to the range every weekend and never had a problem with my .22. I clean it and lub it after around 500 rounds. I use only cci mini mag and never one had an issue with the Ruger. I have found if you maintain any firearm it will work effectively and as far as the caliber, well once you pull a gun on someone they are not going to question what are you carrying. If anyone plays the guitar they will understand this. I use the 380 more at the range. And once I switch to the .22 my accuracy improves massively, because of the less recoil. It’s like going from playing an acoustic guitar to an electric guitar. Furthermore, I have a lot of friends in the military and law enforcement and they all have told me. An assassin, generally speaking, will use a .22 more than any other gun. For a long time NYPD snipers only used .22 because of the accuracy in an area with a lot of obstacles around them. That is coming from a former NYPD sniper. Again I’m no expert but I don’t think it really matter what caliber as long as you know what the hell you are doing, know your gun. You can be proficient. Stevie Ray Vaughan can make a $100 guitar sound amazing. Proper practice prevents piss poor performance.

Buddy of mine picked up a sig p322. Every few rounds (he had crappy bucket of Remington poop) he had malfunctions of all types. I put every one of those into my brand new, u fired tx22 magazines. Once I had three full mags, I rapid fired as fast as I could , all three mags, not one pickup. I was very impressed and did not expect it

I know there have been quite a few videos on this topic, but as always, your coverage is balanced and practical. Sure, people love to argue about this, but it depends who you are. I have thought about my mom, who was talking about getting a CCW in the last couple of years, and my FN 502 would be pretty ideal for her (especially if they made a subcompact grip). Almost 1000 rounds and two failures to feed with a variety of ammo. Benefit to a newbie is ease of shooting and non-intimidating (the mom case), and anyone can put 15 rounds on target extremely quickly without your ears ringing into deafness. As far as ammo, the most misfires I've ever experienced were from CCI premium. I recently finished off 2 bricks of Federal that I bought at a gun show in 09, with zero misfires. Point is, you're better going with ammo that you've used and found reliable and use fresh ammo.

Shot placement is 🔑. At 4:10.. Not really a catch 22 (lol) 1000 rounds of cci minimag/ velocitors/ segmented hollow points are still cheapee than 500 rounds of AE 124g in my state. Prices are dropping and sales are goin on but normally its cheaper. My p22 is reliable. Changed out a few things but still costed less than 400 bucks. Prob only around 3k and only had 3 ftf. And it was blazer. But the guaranteed 1000 minimag and 300 velocitors. Worked like a charm
