She’s criminally underrated as a singer. Part of the reason is her lack of confidence in her vocal ability. According to many, she just liked to go out there and let it rip. She was more interested in the whole performance. She felt she was adequate enough. This, and other performances, proved she had far more vocal ability than she gave herself credit for. I love her voice. No one can imitate her. No one can cover her songs and make you feel them like she can. When she is vocally on, I think her voice is among the most pleasant in the industry. There are many singers others consider technically better than Madonna who could never ever come close to the vocal performance she gave here.

Truly the performance of her life, Madonna is Evita!! That song is from the scene where she's rapidly dying and her body is preparing for death, and all she wants is validation of her husband's love before she leaves this earth, hence "You must love me." So much genuine emotion from Maddy, I got goosebumps in those few minutes of song, she deserves some much more credit than she actually gets. Arguably not the best technical singer, but definitely a songstress who emotes and connects with her audience, and that's why we love and adore and admire her for never giving up. Bravo!! Also you could argue she saw them as her "superiors " since Madonna always wanted to be an actress and 1990 was 31 years ago so many of the people she name dropped in Vouge were still alive. So she herself was a fan of many people in that room trying to gain their approval.

That's not true. She's not classically trained but has taken vocal training pretty consistently throughout her career, most notably prior to recording the Like A Prayer album and it shows. Then publicly stating so prior to singing these Sondheim songs for Dick Tracy and most notably with Joan Lader for Evita.

Perhaps not the most popular opinion but I think the Evita training actually ruined her voice in the long term. She never sounded this unrestrained or sincere thereafter.

@@GiuseppePascuale928when she did the promos for Ray of Light, even during the same for Music, I did think back then that her 'live' voice sounded somewhat 'weaker', even though her range got wider (no musical training 'ere, so don't get annoyed ppl!...) there was a noticeable difference in the *quality* of her voice. but this 'weakness' was gone by the Re-invention Tour, and she sounds miles better today then in the '80/90s. compare Blonde Ambition to Celebration-you can't. she sounds AMAZING!

Yes, she was definitely nervous. There are a couple of moments at the beginning when you can see her hands shake and her look nervously into the camera. The fact that she absolutely nails this performance being nervous is a testament to how good she is as a performer. A few things about this performance… her date was Michael Jackson who was sitting in the front row, and who she blows a kiss to at the end. The press lost their minds at the King and Queen of Pop together at the Oscars. She was nervous for several reasons. Of course, she wanted to be accepted in Hollywood and hoped this performance of an Oscar nominated song (it later won that night) would help her be accepted by the Hollywood elite and studio bosses. There were also some tech issues which must have thrown her off as well. Apparently there was an issue with the microphone stand or the mic itself and just before she was lifted up stage, someone told her there was no microphone there, or that the microphone stand couldn’t be lifted onto the stage. So Madonna thought she’d be on the stage live in front of millions and she’d have no working mic. Luckily that didn’t happen… I guess at the last moment they solved the issue but that must have rattled her. At the very end of her singing, because she’s taking her fur stole on and off repeatedly in the performance, it loosened one of her very expensive earrings and in a close up you can see it just hanging in her hair. She actually takes the earring and throws it into the orchestra pit so that it doesn’t get lost or come off completely as she continues the performance strutting off stage. I wonder if the earring was ever located… I assume someone collected it for her because she wore real diamonds on loan and it must have cost a small fortune.

I read about this earring toss a few years ago! She was wearing over 20 MILLION dollars worth of Harry Winston Diamonds that night in her jewelry, and it was all on loan from the Winston archive and they all had near heart-attacks when they saw her toss the earring into the orchestra pic. Later they were all more relived than they’d ever been before when she revealed to them she had worn crystal replicas of the jewelry during her performance and switched back after she was done because she suspected an issue would arise.

I've always loved this performance, and this was early nineties when she wasn't even aware of her entire range and wasn't necessarily able to utilize every part of it (she learned a lot about her range and singing technique in general when training for Evita later in the 90s). I think this performance is much better than You Must Love Me (as beautiful as that was) which was after she had had her lessons already. There's something more authentic in this. Her hand shook because of nerves, she admitted it later. It was her first live Oscar performance and it was the biggest live television audience she had ever performed for, and we all know how she is a perfectionist. But I don't mind the couple tiny "mistakes," her authenticity in this performance overrides them, and there's a kind of freedom in this that I really enjoyed. The entire I'm Breathless album that was inspired by the film Dick Tracy is excellent, although very underrated in her back catalogue. On that album she really tapped into a different type of musical genre and showed she can sing more than just pop music which she is very known for. I think people should listen to that album because it really showcases her vocal ability. She very much stepped into character (Breathless Mahoney) and interpreted every song on the album and did a brilliant job with it.
