The scene where Shia is arguing with the therapist gutted me. “The only thing my father ever gave me that was worth something was pain…and now you wanna take that away from me!?” Thats a deep layer. I still think this movie should have WON an Oscar or Globe!

Did he ever get an award for this? What a masterpiece. Speaks to people like me who have gone through something similar. My childhood was very violent. Physically and mentally. It was a project for him to do while in mandatory rehab following the DUI and assault on a cop. To work through his PTSD he wrote this. He didn’t plan to make it a movie but his therapist and others loved it and Shia needed to work through trauma and this is the most honest, heartbreaking, beautiful movie. Imagine releasing this, everyone knows all your sins and life.

I've known abusive people with an ultimately good, but deeply damaged, heart, and I've known abusive people with a cruel and poison heart. When you're on the other side of it, it makes little difference. I, by no means, intens to imply that any abuser shouldn't be held responsible for their actions or that there are any circumstances under which someone should endure abuse. My heart aches in solidarity for the pain, fear, isolation, and helplessness abuse victims endure endured. FKA is so strong and admirable to come forward with such poignant and personal stories that speak so oddly specifically to the experiences of many victims of abuse. I wish her the healing and validation she deserves and needs. I mean only to say that I truly sense that Shia's heart is the former one- made of goodness, but deeply sensitive, steeped in dysfunctional pain- and I do believe that he grieves deeply for the pain he's caused others. I believe in his ability to recover the pureness of his heart and learn to love soundly through intense commitment and treatment, I genuinely do. Sending love, strength, healing, wisdom self-compassion, to all.

I agree. How can a 31 year old woman act in this movie and then make the choice to be in a dating relationship with him. How can an adult think that it would result in a healthy relationship? There is no way he had enough time to heal from his abuse. You can’t expect an abused child to grow up to become an adult who acts and reacts normally without years to decades of psychological help.

I think Shia speaks from his insight of himself. he sabotages his success because of the guilt his father placed on him because Shia was more successful than his father was. how flucked up are you as a parent than when instead of pride for your son's success, you are jealous of him? 🤨🙄

Where was his mother though, I wondered through all the flick! A mother not there means of little help and guidance. The flick is very soft on showing how ignorant or selfish his parents were. I believe it was even worse. I'm sorry for that experience, as a child he seemed to not yet understand, felt lonely sometimes but didnt yet understand what happend. PTS from all that he created for them, clearly! On the other hand, made him understand a bigger slice of life in the end. Hope he can come to terms and find a moderate way to live and finally makes better choices reagarding women! :) Greetz from Europe!

I dont think he's telling the truth. Its immense guilt on his dad during his final years/disease etc.. and if his dad is anything to go by the film, made him feel this pain and guilt "making me look terrible to the world" and he is that type to sacrifice his own reputation for his fathers. Maybe once his dad passes, he'll come out and say he did it for his dad. The only thing anyway I got from it, was that his dad didn't physically beat him.. all the other stuff was real. Guilt for his father "dont do that to people you love" narrative, has made this come to light..

I couldn’t get myself to actually watch the entire movie because Shias dad in the movie (which is also played by Shia) is so rude and abusive to Shia. The scenes and lines are created based on Shia’s memories about his dad. I’m not even 12 minutes in and I’m cringing. The dad telling Shia his pen** is too small and then he said move let me show you what a grown man is supposed to sound like. He even said dad I’m 12, wtf? He was picked on way too much… by his own dad nonetheless! Your parents are supposed to be your protectors! The other part that gets under my skin: he was telling his dad he’s going to a dodger game then had to literally ask his dad for HIS OWN MONEY back, his per diem money/what he earned that day. It’s HIS money!! Gosh Shia is an amazing actor and my favorite of all time, definitely. But he didn’t deserve the horrible treatment he got all the time.

it only took me watching this movie 5 times, to realisie that this movie is about otis's older self being tramatized; and the flashbacks are showing his younger self with his abusive father and what causes all his trama and ptsd. And its not showing flashbacks of the dads younger self showing he has a hard past and giving him a back story
