I usually fill the box with frames just to prevent them from making a mess. If i want to leave them more open area i use frames with no foundation and checkerboard them with acorn plastic frames.

That will work too. You may catch a little bit smaller swarm that way.

I have not seen it done and have no idea if it would work but could you use a deep with medium frames to give a little space on the bottom side and not use the spacers? I need to get that book.

It would work but I believe it would be a little small still. You are looking for the over all volume you get from the deep with the spacer or a medium and a deep.

After you catch a swarm do you close up the hive for a day or two? Some claim this helps the bee's to adjust to their new home.

I usually do not. I move them at least 2 miles from where I caught them and feed them sugar syrup. If I couldn’t move them that far I would keep them closed up for three days as long as it’s not really hot. Bees can overheat easily.

But it wouldn’t hurt to close them up as long as it’s not too hot.
