Hello gardening friends! In today's video I am planting some new goodies in my blue, white, and yellow border which was inspired by Monty Don's garden on the mound. Bears… that’s scary. Are you keeping bear spray close while working outside. Possibly an air horn canister too for the noise.

Oh my gosh, I wish I could dig in my garden like that. Even though I have Sandy soil in Florida, everything is competing for space underground. I have to dig, cut, dig, cut, dig, cut. Planting here is a pain in the butt, but oh so rewarding.

Oh my word...bear, yes I'd be worried at every crack in the woods too. Wouldn't it be nice if HGTV still had garden shows, I've said for yrs they should just drop the G. I'm thankful I can watch Monty here on YT. I just ordered some thalictrum from a place in the UK. Have you heard of dierama flower, also called, Angel's fishing rod, I think you'd love those too.

I love dierama! It wouldn’t be perennial in my zone but I’ve considered growing it as an annual. Right up my alley!

Ostrich ferns are so lush and pretty. They're sold bare root if you want to fill in a larger area.. Beautiful garden. Someone suggested a horn or spray for the bears, great idea. Stay safe

Maybe the bear smells your honey? I always was wondering if you had any bears visit because your yard looks like it’s bordering a National Park. I was nervous for you too. Please be careful and protect your animals too.😊💖

We don’t have bees or honey at this time, but the day in question he came around I was outside cooking brunch on our outdoor griddle. It was also garbage day, so everyone had their cans out on the street.

I don’t know if it’s an old wives tale but I’ve heard that some people put human hair around their perimeter because deer wont cross it. You could ask your local hairdresser to collect the clippings for you and give it a try. Would male urine work? For the bear as well? Australia is known for its deadly creatures but bears in my garden, I’d be too scared to go outside.
@HoneyHill
@HoneyHill Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the human hair doesn't really work for the deer. Even if something deters them initially they eventually get used to it, and if they are hungry enough nothing keeps them back. It would be nice to put up a fence someday. The bears and mountain lions in our area can be scary! Thankfully, an attack is very rare.

I had to put in a six foot fence. My food garden is behind another 6 foot fence inside my fenced yard, and all my fruit trees and roses in the yard have an extra fence around it. It's mostly stopped the deer, but they destroyed a metal gate so we had to fix another wooden gate this spring. They can destroy all your expense plants very quickly. They could probably break into the Pentagon if they thought there was something edible in there.

I love the airiness of the scabiosa flowers, they break up the yellow beautifully. I have the blue note variety in my garden and want to add more - I didn’t know they came in white! Huge congratulations on reaching 10K, I’m sure this is just the beginning for you!

Oh my, how scary. I’m afraid if I saw a black bear in my yard I’d freak out. I live in the coastal gulf area and we’ve had two black bears on the beach in the Gulf of Mexico 😮 one swam out of the ocean and onto the beach and walked right up to an outdoor eating establishment. Then there was another in another part if Florida and I think one was seen in Mobile Alabama. West Alabama has black bears but it’s not often that they cross the bay and swim into the Gulf of Mexico. That’s a lot of water!!
@HoneyHill
@HoneyHill Жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness, those bears must have been on a mission crossing that water! There are roughly 20,000 black bears in the state of Washington according to our local fish and wildlife department. 🐻Most years we rarely see them, this has just been a particularly busy year with the black bears. We also have cougars, moose, and rattlesnakes.

@@HoneyHill that’s a lotta 🐻 we have a lot of rattlesnakes, copperheads.. moccasins as well. Most of our black bears are in the northern part of our states but we don’t have that many. We do have bobcats and a few others and we live in total woods. The deer are problems for farmers. They come right up to our carport.

That’s a big shady area!!!! My yard is almost all shade so I’m struggling on what to plant. We live in the woods. Do the hydrangeas do well there? I wanted a cottage garden but I’m so limited on sunlight. It’s closer to the house. I do have a woodland garden. I have a big fern that I’m putting there. There’s a little pond there and I have a rock garden area near by that has a little pond at the foot of it. It looks like a natural waterfall. I have lots of ivy in this area. I have one very sunny area that I’m getting ready for wildflowers and salvias next year. Any advice on those areas would be great. Your gardens are absolutely gorgeous.

Hi there and thank you! There is some shade here, but it’s also deceptively sunny with southern exposure. Someday as the crabapple trees grow I’ll have more shade. Right now in the full sun the hydrangeas I’ve planted are doing well! You can still plant lovely cottage plants in a shady area, ferns of course, macrophylla hydrangeas like shade, also astrantia, hostas, Solomon’s seal, and monkshood are a few others.

@@HoneyHill thank you. I’ll screenshot this so I’ll have it to look back on. I won’t remember tomorrow lol Yes it is deceptive as far as shade. Shade is nice but so limiting as far as what I can plant. But we definitely enjoy it in these temperatures. It helps keep our house cool. It was 108 degrees today. I’m glad I found you. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Everything is beautiful. SO sorry about the deer damage. I have a granddog (he's a Rottweiler) that causes damage in my yard. He's still a puppy so he's learning. I have the David phlox in my garden and they may come up from the root if you planted it. Mine are blooming right now. We have a lily pond in our yard and I have two beautiful pink lilies blooming.

Thank you so much, Jamie! I am sorry about the puppy damage as well. Our Australian Shepherd, Prairie, initially caused some damage in my garden, but has thankfully has grown out of chewing and digging. Unfortunately, we still have a tiny bare pathway around our lawn from her walking her same route every day. I will hope for the best with the David Phlox, its such a beautiful and classic phlox. Your pond sounds beautiful!
