When you have a new place like this, you can cover with a big thick black plastic por a month or two. Or you can cover with news papers and after you cover everything you water them, and cover with some inert substrate. It is sooo simple but really efective. After that I planted some daucus carota purple kisses, and with its roots really improved the soil. I hpe it will help you some day.

It's so nice to watch you plant: thoughtfully, quietly, with a shovel. What draws us to gardening is the particular and the personal engagements we have with our gardens. So much of that is lost in the gluttony expressed in huge projects and mechanized planting. Your new area shows so much promise; I'm looking forward to seeing how it develops.

Suggestion for when you have plants that are still in their nursury pots that get dried out: leave them in their pots and submerge the pot in a big bucket of water until you no longer see air bubbles. I have saved many dried out plants this way that have gone on to thrive!

Fab! Only thing I would say is don’t use compost to fill your holes- it will decompose and you’ll have your holes back, you need to use soil!! ❤

These plants are sooo lovely! I wish our local nursery had plants like this in that size. Ours are all gallon containers for most perennials like hydrangeas and budlias and those cost so much! That prairie area is really coming along, I'm excited to see how these all grow to fill the space in the next couple years.

That was a plant haul! The hydrangea is gorgeous! I can't wait to see this space finished-I bet you can't either. I have a small area that has bindweed growing in it as well. I used both of those sprays as well and neither would get rid of it. I finally had to get Roundup. I made sure that I wore protective clothes. I also made sure that if there was anything else close that I covered that up with cardboard. I sprayed it one time and that's all it took. Once bindweed has taken hold in a yard it's very difficult to eradicate. Good luck!

Thank you! I love that hydrangea, and yes I am so excited for this space to fill in. I hear you with the bindweed, it is such a hard to tackle weed and one I often feel defeated by. Glad you were able to eradicate it. I will keep everyone up to date with the progress! 🌿

just beautiful! As far as the new bed and the bind weed, I don't have bind weed in my zone 5 Indiana....but, since there are no plants in there yet. Try torching the weeds (with a water hose nearby) you only have to hit the weeds with a torch for 4 to 6 seconds. It takes care of the grass and just might kill the cellular structure of bind weed so it dies by the root. You don't have to hover the torch long enough so that the plants catch on fire, 5 seconds on each one does work. I use it on thistle, creeping charlie, purslane etc.
@HoneyHill
@HoneyHill 11 ай бұрын
Great suggestion, I’ve read about good luck with torching weeds, and glad to hear it’s helped you tackle some tough ones. I’ll have to check if there any burn restrictions in my area, we are in wildfire season. 🌿

I’m pretty hopeless at propagating plants from cuttings but with the Verbena it was very easy. I just took some bits I had cut back and shoved them in the ground and they all took. I have clay and limestone soil.
@HoneyHill
@HoneyHill 11 ай бұрын
That’s brilliant! Will definitely give it a try. I am all about the easy to propagate all-stars in the garden. Did you cut right below a leaf node, strip the leave and plant at that point?

Hi Sam, what was your thoughts on using a hydrangea hedge instead of box woods? Aesthetic preference?
@HoneyHill
@HoneyHill 11 ай бұрын
I love both, they can even be paired together to form a hedge. I’ll be planting my hydrangea hedge soon! Love the multi-seasonal color and flower power of the hydrangeas, but the evergreens are also lovely all year long. The only downside to boxwood is the risk of boxwood blight.

I believe the variety I am planting is technically the lollipop that is hardy to zone 6, and I am in 6b. However, I don’t find it reliably hardy where I am. High humidity and high temps are so hard! Sending you cool wishes!

Is that hydrangea ok in the sunshine ? Or does your rose meadow get enough shade for them to be happy together? I’ve just always heard a hydrangea needs mostly shade
@HoneyHill

These are Panicle hydrangeas and they thrive in full sun! Like other hydrangeas though, they need plenty of water!

do your delphiniums die back to the ground in 100 degree temps? we're reaching 100 degrees consistently now too in Texas and my delphiniums are dying. Hoping they come back but it's the first year i've planted them so i'm unsure if they will
@HoneyHill
@HoneyHill 11 ай бұрын
They can do, yes. I would make sure they have plenty of water, and you can cut them down to the ground and give them a good organic fertilizer, and they should grow back fresh. Is your soil more clay or sand? They prefer heavier soil.
@Almundjoy

Deer don’t eat the incrediballs?
@HoneyHill
@HoneyHill 11 ай бұрын
In my experience deer do eat hydrangeas, but I spray mine with liquid fence regularly which helps greatly but doesn't stop it completely, but once they are large and established the deer browsing gets better. It's harder to control with small plants. I also notice the deer in my area prefer some hydrangeas to others. For example, the go after my Fire Light and Bobo hydrangeas every year, but are less interested in Limelight. Incrediballs fall somewhere in between.
