An overview of the entire Evohome system and the various options you can build into your Honeywell Evohome multi zone thermostat connected system. I show you how to use most of the options including the app and third party apps that work with Evohome. How to add local single zone thermostats to give local override options. I personally love this system and hope you find this walkthrough useful.

I fitted my Evohome system about 3 years ago and it's absolutely fantastic! My system consists of a Combi boiler for heating and DHW with the Evohome Opentherm Bridge. I have 9 Evohome TRVs on 8 zones (my lounge has 2 radiators) in a 4 bedroom house. I've never had any problems with my setup and my gas bills are extraordinarily low. I reckon another couple of years and the kit will have paid for itself. I've done careful measurements, and every zone is within 0.5*C of its set temperature, and my batteries last 2 years. Geofencing and app features also work great. If I moved house, I would take the system with me because I've kept all the wax TRVs, so it would be a quick swap. You have to be aware that if you want ultimate accuracy, the doors between different zones need to be kept closed. That's no problem for me as I live on my own! By the way, Opentherm controls the boiler so it's no longer on full-blast, or off. It controls the gas more like a tap so gives a reduced flow when just heating one radiator.

@@dineshhirani2336 Hi. I no longer use the Geofencing feature as it used the additional app IFTTT which I deleted when it became a subscription model. In my circumstances it wasn't worth the additional monthly fee. After 2 years I still think the Evohome system is there best for controlling Central heating. I've had no issues whatsoever. This really is a "fit and forget" system for someone who's at home most days. I've since switched off "local control" at the main controller, because I realised my cleaning lady accidentally changed temperatures as she was dusting the radiators 😂

You will also need a boiler that has a very low minimum output to run one radiator efficiently Too many people go for high out put boilers or have older combis that may only have a min output of 10-12kw when one radiator prob only requires perhaps 1.5kw/h

Thanks very much for the Evohome explanation. I was looking for a system would allow the traditional 1-zone system with multiple rooms and radiators to multi zone system without having to reinstall individual zones for each room. Well, I knew it could be done with a 'smart' TRV which would have 2-way comms with a central control system (and not relying on a single central thermostat) but I did not know which system could do this. I am much the wiser having gone through your explanation of the Evohome system. Although I will look at other reviews as well but your's the first good one. Next, need to find out if there are other such systems around and if they can cater for 'room presence' detector which can take away a lot of heating schedule programming or just to override the system. Thanks.

when you say regulate? The HCF82 can be set to give the temperature for any number of wireless TRVs. TYhis is done from with the evohome controller and pairing the hcf82 with 1 or more TRVs. You can even still have a zone with remote control via the t87rf and the temperature read from the hcf82 and still have control from the main controller too.

Thank you, great review. I have a question - is it possible to use TRVs only on some radiators in the house? I'd like to have some specific zones controlled by TRVs and "Other" zone controlled by main valve. So that if TRV zone wants heat - main valve and TRV is open and if "Other" wants heat only main is open.

not sure what you mean by main valve. if you leave the trv off a rad then that rad will only come on when one of the other trvs calls for heat. like how a bypass rad would work.

@@alanrossreviews I have district heating, so in 1 zone setup, evohome controls main valve of it. Basically, you can see it as a boiler. So my idea was to put TRVs only on some specific radiators where I want fine control, and all the rest will be controlled as one single "Other" zone without TRVs. It will mean that this zone will be on when at least one TRV is on, but that's ok for me.

Pros and cons with Evohome really. I’ve had a TRV go after a couple of years and it’s a £60 replacement so wipes out a lot of saving if it’s out of warranty so could be a very expensive timebomb. I have 14 TRVs but there are only 12 zones, not sure why (I got around it by adding two standalone thermostats). The system has had very little development from Honeywell over the years, same with the app which is a shame - it seems very dated now; there is a home security system alongside but it’s anything but secure. That said, it does what it says it does and every room is controllable assuming the doors are shut. I run it on rechargeable AAs and they last anything from a month to maybe six but a lot cheaper than non-rechargeables. Overall, dated due to poor development, left behind by newer systems, could be very expensive if TRVs drop out regularly but when working it does what it sets out to do. I forget to mention - it works with Alexa.
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 3 жыл бұрын
you should be grouping the trvs into zones, it shoudnt be one zone per thermostat. you should use some standalone thermostat like the T87 as the main temperature reading for a zone of more than one rad.

Hi Alan, I am considering purchasing the Evohome system and your video and all of the reviews have been so very helpful. I think I understand it but then again this is a learning curve for me. Can I ask - I am in a 2 storey large house with 5 radiators on ground floor and 4 radiators on first floor. Could i install just 2 trv's (one downstairs and one upstairs) to control the temperature by floor? I spend most of my time on ground floor. Please & many thanks
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 2 жыл бұрын
yes, you would need to setup two zones, upstairs and downstairs, then assign one of the trvs as the temperature readout. you still need a trv on all radiators though otherwise when one zone is calling for heat any radiator without a trv will be giving out heat.

Thank you for this video. At some point, around min 10, you mention that the temperature is read by the rtv and by the thermostat, positioned in different spots of the room, and they will balance temperature. I can only place the thermostat in a cold room in the basement. Is there a way I can setup to isolate the thermostat sensor and only take temperature from the rtv?
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 5 жыл бұрын
yes i think you may have misunderstood. each zone takes its reading from a specified temperature reading. It can be a trv OR the controller itself, but not both. You can also get standalone sensors to place anywhere in a room for that purpose.

Do the trvs without the digital display last longer between battery changes? Also, is there mu h feedback on energy used prior and post converting to this multi zone? My fear is that all the zones will be aiming to reach temp at different times and then the boiler is constantly running
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 2 жыл бұрын
this will be down to how you set it. but even so they should all be at temperature at same time. the thermostat learns how much heat it takes to raise the temp in a zone so over time it can maintain that temperature with short bursts of heat. it works on a cycle and knows how much heat to give each zone per cycle. you will need well specd radiators if you set different temperatures for each room to make sure each zone has enough heat on its own per zone.

Thanks Alan, informative. I have a question. Surely the Evohome wireless TRV is sensing the temperature right next to the rad - just a couple of inches away where it's much hotter, not in the main part of the room. Doesn't this create a situation whereby you have to compensate for the room's air being slightly cooler than that being sensed by the wireless TRV?
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 4 жыл бұрын
thats how most trvs work. you can set an offset to compensate. however you can also use stalone temperature sensors and themostats elsewhere in the room and set them as the temperature sensor for that zone, thats what i do.

@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 7 жыл бұрын
for me the evohome has the most options to grow as much as you want. The only thing it is missing is weather monitoring and the motion sensor though not sure how useful that would be in practice. I dont like the heat genius thermostat either. With the evohome i can place the easy to use y87 thermostat in every room i want local control and still use their standalone temperature sesnsors to sense the temperature from exactly where i want. I can overcome with the lack of geolocation with the ifttt app. The evohome trv is easy to use as a standalone trv not sure about the genius but the evohome display on the trv is superior with more info. Also much easier turning a dial then using the up down buttons on the genius.

@alanrossreviews

no that just relates to the temperature you have set. For example the room may be at 20, but if set it to be at 26 the screen will turn red simply to indicate a hot temperature has been set. There is no indication of what valve is calling for heat, if any. Red is hot temperature, orange cool and green low.

Just changing the subject a bit here, is this EvoHome smart heating system from Honeywell compatible with older combination boilers such as a Vaillant Turbomax boiler? Great video - I am having my system drained soon and I thought it would be a good time to introduce TRV's. As it is quite expensive is it possible to fit just the valve bodies while the system is drained and then I can buy one or two of the things with the bit you twist to adjust the temperature each month and fit them without having to drain the system each time? Thanks!
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 7 жыл бұрын
As long as you fit the valve bodies you can then fit the TRV's without any of the other evohome hardware or software. It works as a standalone TRV, just a very accurate one. When you fit the evohome TRV make sure it is unbound, so it is not trying to communicate with the main controller. Then just twist the top dial for the temperature you want and it will keep the room to that setting.

Dude I’m interested in getting the Evo System. I do have one concern however, and that is how noisy the trv’s are when they actuate. Are they noisy? I have a young son and don’t want to be waking him up when the radiator comes on in the night!

well depends on what you call noisey, they are certainly obvious when they open and close, loud enough to wake a child? debatable but possible i guess.

I’d love to see one in action, I’ve seen another brand being reviewed on KZbin and the trv was very noisy. Thanks for your reply mate

We have them in the bedrooms and they don’t wake my two kids up, or me and the wife. Yes, you can hear them actuate but they’re not that noisy.

its not a big deal, just flip off the lid of a thermostat, take out, put in, close lid.

@@alanrossreviews Am I right in thinking best to use proper batteries, not rechargeable? How long roughly do you get out of each set of batteries? I suppose TRVs in rooms that change temperature a lot will use more juice and require changing more regularly?

I have installed a number of these now. Easy to install on the rads. The problem is when it comes to wiring a system with a water cylinder. You don’t need a valve. You then just rely on a TRV. When the hot water comes on it sends water to the cylinder and to the radiators. If the trv runs out of power and is open in the summer. When the hot water comes on it sends round that radiator. All these reviews are for a basic systems not the more complex ones they don’t supply diagrams for!! I would avoid this system!!

or just replace the batteries in the trv?

alan ross what about if they can’t? We have used all the equipment in this video on a project. With a stored water system ie s plan you don’t have a valve for the radiator circuit. If you do put one in the relays work against each other. Technical have a full time job with these systems.

You have 2 x two-port valves for an S-Plan; one for HW, one for CH. With evohome, this means installing a BDR relay for the CH valve which comes with the *ATP921* starter pack. If you additionally want to control HW, you install an *additional* BDR relay for the HW valve, which comes part of the *ATFx00DHW* hot water kit. Even without evohome, if you had no valve for the CH, the CH would come on every time the cylinder stat called for heat. Possibly you're talking about a Y-plan? In which case yes, there is only one mid-position valve for both CH and HW. There are however accommodated in the evohome installers' guide; p43. www.honeywelluk.com/Documents/All/pdf/Sundial-S-Plan-Reference-Guide.pdf www.honeywelluk.com/Documents/All/pdf/Sundial-Y-Plan-Reference-Guide.pdf www.honeywelluk.com/Documents/All/pdf/evohome%20Connected%20Installation.pdf www.screwfix.com/p/honeywell-evohome-hot-water-kit/8406h

19 to 24 degrees is a 5 degree spread, not 6 degrees. Similarly, 19 to 21 is 2 degrees, not 3.

@@alanrossreviews I'm not sure why you're being sarcastic, especially when you're utterly wrong. It's very simple - you said 19-24 is a "spread of six degrees", and that's wrong. If it were right, 19-20 degrees would be a spread of 1 degree, and it isn't. 18.5 to 24.5 is six degrees. If you don't understand this then you don't understand the product that you're reviewing.
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 3 жыл бұрын
@@maxmerton i could not explain it any simpler so not much more i can say. ok one more try, 19-24, you say it a 5 degree spread. bit it contains 6 different degrees. 19 = 1, 20 = 2, 21 = 3, 22 = 4, 23 = 5, 24 = 6. If you still find that hard to grasp im sorry but there is not much hope left :)
@maxmerton
@maxmerton 3 жыл бұрын
@@alanrossreviews You don't have to "try". I'm a heating engineer. I grasp everything to do with heating. It's you who isn't understanding that "a degree" is a measurement, not a numeral. 24 - 19 = 5. That's a five degree spread. 24.5 - 18.5 is a six degree spread. What's particularly interesting isn't your obstinacy in accepting that you're wrong, but the fact that you encourage comments and then belittle people for making them. If you don't want mistakes pointed out, then don't make them. And if you don't to hear the truth, then don't enable commenting.

10:38 that's totally wrong, the evohome can handle up to 12 heating zones not 12 individual radiators.In 1 zone you can put how many HR92 TRV's you want.
@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews 6 жыл бұрын
yeah i should have said zones, but what i was trying to put over is that you cant have more than 12 trvs controlled by the main controller, so if each trv is a zone thats 12 radiators as a maximum. But it did confuse the point. More than 12 trvs then some have to be bound to another temperature sensor. Sorry.
