The high CADR and low noise is what matters to most buying this unit. The extra $10-20/yr of electricity and true HEPA filters that are available from many third parties for $30-40/yr not factors worth complaining about. Other AHAM verified comparable CADR purifiers sell for a lot more..

i'd take what this guy says with a grain of salt. he doesnt take into account CADR which is the really important factor here. as for the carbon pre filter it is designed to be replaced after 4 months because the activated carbon loses its ability to adsorb molecules (the odor reducing ability) so yes the carbon filter is in fact a prefilter and by the time that it would become clogged to the extent that it would impact CADR it would be way past time to replace the prefilter.

at the begining of covid I bought few winx and honeywell hpa160. all have been running 24x7x365. the winx units make noises on low settings. the hpa160 has been flawless. although i like winx for its looks and features i would go for the honewell next time around. i do also own the larger germ guardian and it has been running nonstop for years with zero issues.

I have 2 Coway AP-1512HH's and the Honeywell HPA 300. Had them all for about 2.5 years and they're both good units. Filter prices for the HPA300 have come down substantially, as long as you're not buying Honewell's filters. You can buy 6 HEPA filters and 4 carbon pre-filters for about $60 from a variety of sources on Amazon for example. The energy cost difference in my opinion is negligible. The HPA 300 has substantially more coverage area than either the Coway or Winix unit.

yea mine is wildfire region tested and i love it. it doesnt hold a candle to my 1980's era honeywell enviracaire (which luckily still works) but it is a fine machine. people that NEED hepa filters arent buying things to be energy efficient we are buying units for the CADR not the # of watts or the CFM. this guy has a really shitty review and he probably vouches for ionic air cleaners.

95 watts at 120v is less than 0.8 amps which isn’t a large load. If you’re accurate with the wattage then it couldn’t be that inefficient even if it’s not as efficient as the competition

You point out filter cost. 5500-2 filter cost is $60. HPA300 pack of 3 filters is $63. That's not much of a difference as you make it out to be. Also you recommend "Beyond 300 sq. ft. we recommend multiple units running simultaneously (as we described above)." so for if someone has 450sqft they can just buy the HPA300 instead of doing 2 Winix-5500-2. The power use on t he HPA is 2x the Winix-5500-2 which is something to be considered
@consumer-analysis4 жыл бұрын
The Honeywell filter 3 pack you're referring to does not include any carbon filters. Those add quite a bit to the cost as they have to be replaced much more frequently than the unit's HEPA filters. The 5500-2 filter cost you referenced does include a carbon filter. And the Winix's carbon filter will last much longer than a single carbon filter for the Honeywell. The HPA300 does offer higher CFM than the 5500-2 - approx. 320 CFM compared to 250 CFM for the Winix. Though in my testing, both units were about equally competent in rooms up to 300 sq. ft. Beyond 300 sq. ft. both units were equally incompetent. I expand on what I learned in testing in large rooms here: www.consumeranalysis.com/guides/air-purifiers/large-room-air-purifier/

@@consumer-analysis replacing the carbon filters is a joke, I've been rinsing them out with water in my shower for 10 years, they're like brand-new, total waste of money to replace them so often.
@jrs-sx5jb3 жыл бұрын
@@daleadmire1451 well you do realize that the activated carbon in carbon pre filters. is what called an adsorbent meaning molecules stick to it like fly paper. when ac gets saturated it molecules can no longer stick to it anymore that is why they get replaced. when you washed your carbon filter, any adsorbent quality it had left was immediately used up as it will adsorb stuff from the water but if it was already old then it wasnt adsorbing anything from the air and all it was doing is blocking crap like pet hair from reaching the HEPA elements... the only way you can recharge or regenerate granulated activated carbon is in a furnace at 1000 degrees F
@daleadmire14513 жыл бұрын
At the end of the day the proof is in the pudding, I rinse those carbon pre filters around every 2 months there's a ton of fine dust stuck to them much more than just pet hair, and my HEPA filters stay relatively clean I replace those maybe once a year so obviously the pre filters are still doing their job, but hey it's just money right?
@jrs-sx5jb3 жыл бұрын
@@daleadmire1451 " I replace those maybe once a year so obviously the pre filters are still doing their job". No not really... AC needs to be replaced about every 4 months or so to actually adsorb molecules in the air. will it catch garbage before it hits the HEPA element yes, that is until it breaks down or tears etc. will it continue to do that until it clogs to the point where theres so much buildup it cant be rinsed clean yes. but the point of an AC pre filter is not only to catch junk before it hits the main filter but to chemically scrub the air and that you cant regenerate. whatever you do is up to you and yea it is *money* but if you dont replace it more often than 3 times a year then you might as well put a fine mesh screen in front of your hepa cartridges cuz the AC isnt doing anything after about 4 mo or so. (its saturated with VOCs other molecular sized contaminates.

I have a quick question please, say If I use two carbon pre filters at the same time (put them in the place of one) will it filter out odor better. I have cooking odor issues hence this question. Thanks for your time in advance.
@jrs-sx5jb3 жыл бұрын
no it wont filter it better. activated carbon has microscopic pores where odor molecules say hydrogen sulfide (if someone rips one) stick (adsorb) to the activated carbon. having a second one present would increase the amount of AC which could adsorb stuff (NOT THE *RATE* at which it adsorbs) but it would also affect air throughput. all you need is one and replace it at the typical interval. the AC becomes saturated over time and once it is used up it needs to be replaced otherwise it wont remove chemical pollutants from the air it will just act to prevent pet hair from reaching the HEPA element. If you are expecting this to take care of cooking odors this is not what a HEPA filter is designed to do. you should be looking at a cooking range hood with a very high CFM throughput to exhaust to the outside of the kitchen. compounds released during cooking will very easily saturate a carbon filter both with smoke/aerosols/grease not to mention destroy the HEPA filter prematurely.

FWIW I just bought one of these because I had the round version running in my place for 15 years straight 24/7 before it finally stopped working last week. Truth is I don't know that I ever replaced the HEPA filters but I frequently replaced the carbon filter. In any case it was reliable at least. EDIT: Also, one more future suggestion for videos of this type. Record the the filter running at the different speeds it supports. I would have been very interested in hearing the noise it makes since that's obviously a huge concern for an air filter that may be running a few feet away from you day and night. UPDATE: I received it and the build quality seems poorer than the previous version. The last one I had was built like a tank. On this one the grill covering the filter seemed had a broken latch on one side. Even the side that was working looked flimsy. I didn't want to go through the effort of sending it back, so I used velcro tape to attach the covering, which works fine. But I don't feel this filter has the quality of their previous versions.

ahh yes the honeywell enviracaire filter i still have mine and it still runs although every now and then it squeaks from the plastic somewhere. i love that thing. the donut HEPA filters were the best. 3yrs without a replacement even with heavy pollen counts. yes the build quality on this is not the same as the enviracaire units from the 80's 90's but then again its to make more profit. build quality so long as its not literally falling apart in my hand is second importance to me when compared to the CADR and this unit doesnt disappoint there. this guys review is bullshit. he doesnt understand that the carbon filter is designed to be expendable and that by the time the prefilter gets clogged the AC is chemically saturated it can no longer adsorb chemicals from the air and is supposed to be replaced.

hes a coway shill or some other crap. i dont even think he mentioned the CADR - you know the thing that people with allergies care about and the true determining factor when it comes to filtering air especially when dealing with a HEPA filter this is not designed to be a fan. CFM is not the most important thing CADR is. i have this unit and live in California and this thing easily holds its own with the wildfires that we currently have going on here. downstairs you can smell smoke (outdoor AQI 2.5 is 700+) and upstairs where the unit is you cant smell or feel any smoke.

take it with a grain of salt the guy doesnt even mention CADR which is the important rating when it comes to FILTERS and NOT fans. CFM is important for fans but id rather know about the clean air delivery rate not how much air it moves as with CFM. also the carbon filter is the pre filter and it is designed to not be "cleanable" because the AC on it has a limited lifespan before the carbon no longer adsorbs VOCs from the air. the carbon can be vacuumed off and that works just fine but by the time the thing gets fully clogged the AC is no longer scrubbing the air of chemicals. this video is a garbage review that doesnt touch on key factors when it comes to HEPA filters. people suffering from asthma aren't really concerned about energy efficiency or CFM they want high CADRs and this guy doesnt talk about that at all. i have this unit and i live in norcal near the crazy fires and this thing works wonders.

One of the products you recommended instead have Ozone producing filters which are considered as dangerous for lungs, as advised by the EPA. If you're recommending purifiers, at least recommend those that aren't endangering health of the consumers.
@consumer-analysis4 жыл бұрын
The units I recommend can only release ozone with their ionizers turned on. And this feature can easily be turned off and left off. Anyone was able to get replacement parts? Like Grill panel (access for filters) etc? It looks flimsy...
@jinx01923 жыл бұрын
The panel is strong enough for its purpose of looks. That's all it does. The filters behind it are held in place by friction and the large pre filter is held on by velcro strips on the sides. If you break the front grill it was either abused or broken by accedent because of poor placement in the house.
@jrs-sx5jb3 жыл бұрын
its not flimsy because its not an industrial air scrubber like what firefighters use after a fire or what mold remediators use when on the job. this even though it is "portable" is meant to be positioned in a room and not moved. i put mine in a corner and nothing bumps/hits it. like the other guy said if you break it its not because of build quality its because of user neglect. this is the 21st century you arent going to get the build quality of 1980's era enviracaire hepa filters for this cost. stuff is made with cheaper materials to minimize production costs and maximize profits. point is this device is a fine HEPA filter and contrary to what the reviewer says (and hes speaking out his ass) the CADR clean air delivery rate is great. people needing a hepa filter due to respiratory conditions like asthma arent concerned about how many watts it uses or how many CFM it moves they want a high CADR and this unit provides it.
