I agree there's def a stigma in becoming a traditional chef or cook in HK. Parents generally want their kids to be a doctor or lawyer to show off etc. to their friends

Dai Pai Dong is where you meet up your bros, maybe after a tough day or you just want to spend some good time. Having those tasty stir fry dishes while drinking cold beer on a hot summer night is nostalgic af.

After watching this video and already watching other videos, I am very glad I was able to go to Hong Kong and try some of the Dai-Pai Dong places. I know that it is very difficult to keep them alive and I find it very disheartening since Hong Kong has so much culture and my family originated from there. I hope to go back soon and try more places that may not exist once the owners are gone and they are unable to have someone or the ability to pass on their knowledge of our culture with someone that can continue it.

Tea is called " Chai " in Hindi . It's the fact that Tea originated in China and was exchanged with Indian Traders in Classical Antiquity . China calls Tea Cha and Indians call it Chai . The pronounciation has not at all changed in millennia . 👍👍👍👍👍

Yeah, but in NY restaurants will charge you $1-2 dollars for "tea", and $5-6 for "Chai". Assholess

Thats really cool! Another thing that I find interesting is that in Romanian we call tea "ceai" which is pronounced basically the same way as Chai. For me it's interesting how chinese influenced the romanian word for tea even though historically there was no connection between China and Romania, however the name still stayed

People always ask me for things to do when in HK..I just tell them to go to any local diner, and order whatever is there that they would like to try. That's the whole experience.

Who is watching in 2021? After these past nearly 2 years these places are really suffering, if open at all! The government should do what Singapore government has done and take care of these dai pia dong and the market cafeteria.

Are there culinary schools around? Make students train with the small restaurants as apart of their courses. Another option is to start apprenticeship for those who may not want to go to school. Train them and help the families continue the business. Just trying to think outside the box.
@VWYL900802
@VWYL900802 3 жыл бұрын
apprenticeship is the way to go. It's the family structure and seeing the changes of the city and the people dynamics is the whole experience. Modern HK since post war has always been just a big gigantic social structure experiment. And all the HK cafes and restaurant overseas are like another social structure experiment that's constantly evolving to adapt to changes and policies in the local area. You see Chinese restaurant overseas evolve to accommodate the commercial needs of the locals. Chinese food is not something to standardize, it's all a regional kind of thing developed locally so culinary schools don't really match up to the family feel to the business. it's just gonna be a hodge podge of "posh" Chinese food to franchise. Not HK local cuisine. You see the difference of food that's franchised by corporations vs family based dynastic approach to the restaurant business.

Common practice in street stalls. The restaurant does wash them but the locals don't trust it so we pour hot tea or water over them to "wash" them again.

@@gabrielng5315 Hong Kong culture was founded by an amalgamation of mainland migrants. To say immigration is going to wipe out HK culture is like saying drinking water will make you thirsty. As for the guy who thinks the CCP (which doesn't rule HK) will ban food...I have no words.

@teasea546
@teasea546 3 жыл бұрын
What climate? Hong Kong is recognized by the EU, UK, US, Japan and virtually all countries as part of China. If anything, Mike Pompeo said the US will no longer recognize Hong Kong's autonomy from China and will treat Hong Kong the same way as how they treat China in terms of trade. People like you are just butthurt.
