Excellent presentation after waiting so many months of Sam Eats..... Without actually eating and drinking the beauty of DaiPeiTong, I can feel the taste of these excellent stuff. Yes, I can smell it ! Thanks Sam for another well researched programme which helps so many people all over the world to understand the eating and drinking cultures of Hong-Kong, where EAST meets WEST, which, you will never find in another city in Asia 🌏 !!!! THANK YOU !!!

Sam, as ex-pat living in Sydney for decades, I hate you for making me miss HK food every time I watch your videos, but I love for nailing it every single time. And this is from someone who was born and bred with street food in the Shum Sui Po district. You must do a video there for the tofu fa. Can you please do other videos on the best wonton soup, the soup base cannot be replicated anywhere in the world, the best congees, the best milk egg custard - double milk skin and ginger syrup Daan dang - steam eggs, and the best steam rice noodles or Cheung fun. Thank you Sam

Hi Peter, thank you so much for watching, and for your support - your words mean a lot to us, and we're really glad we can help you, a Hongkonger who grew up around Sham Shui Po and enjoyed all the street food, relive some memories! Thanks for the suggestions there, I've noted them all down. For Tofu and cheong fun, we feature both in our first Sham Shui Po episode (it's one of our first, so maybe you haven't seen it yet)... just incase, here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHaTn3WAfsSXkNU

Well, well, well. You sure know your way. Kowloon City wet market is the place my buddies hit during lunch during our secondary studies. I was a lucky one as my grandparents live in Kowloon City, i didn't need to fight my way for lunch as there are heaps of schools nearby where lunctime were pretty much similar then. Before this building was accomplished in the early 80's. This wet market used to be an open area where the floor was always wet, instead of plastic bags being used, veggies, meat were all wrapped with newspaper tied with straw. So much memories here. Thank you for bringing it all back!

This was another enjoyable food episode; and, it was educational for me to learn about Lok Yuen and Kowloon City Cooked Food Centre. I had thought that the cooked food centres arose as a way to relocate the dai pai dongs. But, I guess, they originated for other reasons. And, you're right. The cooked food centres are Hong Kong's version of Southeast Asia's hawker centres. The vibe and the atmosphere are very similar.

Thanks as always Vablonsky, for the support and great comment. I think you’re right in some sense, that the markets/food centres were built in part to get vendors off the street! Yes, very much SE Asia hawker centre vibes indeed!

An analog to the satay French toast is chicken & waffles, a dish and combination that's popular in the U.S. and that originated in the American South. It has that same savory and sweet interplay. Crispy, savory fried chicken pieces eaten with breakfast waffles dressed in syrup and butter. Eating fried chicken with waffles seems similarly odd as well. But, the two incongruously pair well together just like the satay beef and the French toast.
@HongKongHoods

That’s a great analogy Vablonsky, and it totally makes sense. Never tried chicken and waffles, but would certainly be interested to try the dish, and Southern cuisine in general! Cheers!

Lok Yuen mean Paradise in English and his food orders were exactly made for adventure. Satay Beef is my childhood favorites and glad is Sam's favorites as well. I also enjoy eating the French Toast. Not sure eating them together because I usually separate the sweet and savory taste. Since he did mention the hawker centre in Singapore, the Satay Beef French Toast is similar to Kaya Toast stuffed with butter and coconut jam and dipped into soft boiled eggs season with white pepper and soy sauce. If I have the Satay Beef Noodles, then I would have the Sweet French Toast probably stuffed with peanut butter. And the Fried Pork Chop go well with the noodles too. Red bean Ice Milk Tea would consider more of drink dessert and Lemon Ice Tea is straight beverage. I will finally coming to HK by the end of next month. May not able explore this place or some of the eatery he had in all of his prior videos or other food video posted by other viewers, but I will definitely get the best especially those with Michellin Stars ratings.

If you are so inclined, you could easily film more episodes about the various cooked food centres. I'm sure there's a vast array of food that you could showcase: stir fried dishes with various proteins, both traditional dishes and trendy updates on old standards. Roast meats, more Canto-Western fare. All of these offerings could be a source of content for future videos. And, you'd be taking viewers deep, both figuratively and literally, into Hong Kong's food culture. I don't think the cooked food centres, lacking the comparative history and attention, are as well known as the dai pai dongs as an aspect of the local food scene. And, they are less visible too because they are housed indoors. But, with street-side dai pai dongs receding, the cooked food centres appear to be more important than ever.
@HongKongHoods

That's a great idea Vablonsky, and thanks so much for the initial ideas there, will definitely note them down and consider it (I also love cooked food centres, so it would be an incredibly fun aspect of Hong Kong food culture to cover!

Cantonese is an incredibly difficult language to learn, and the 6 different tones is probably the hardest part! So you're doing a pretty decent job of it! Sate beef French toast looks different. I think I've commented before that I prefer savoury dishes to sweet dishes, and I honestly can't picture how the two can work together. Perhaps I'll give it a go next time I'm in HK. Lemon tea is my go-to drink in Hong Kong, especially on a hot day. I remember the last time I visited during summer, I was walking around the park for about 15 minutes, found a little cha chaan teng nearby and downed two glasses of lemon tea. Summer in Hong Kong is quite unbearable for me!

Thank you! Still just learning, but definitely picking up some Cantonese food vocabulary! I would certainly recommend this French toast, it truly is special and nothing like what I expected. 4:15 Do you see the dish written in huge font in the very centre of the menu? It's stir-fried rice noodles, another signature of Lok Yuen. It's made with Spam, pork, eggs and some fermented greens, best enjoyed with chili paste. I insist that you give it a try next time.

Btw, these prices might seem really cheap from a US perspective, but as a Hongkonger, these prices are actually slightly expensive to me. That shows how cheap food in Hong Kong is. Also note that there are NO extra sales tax and (almost) NO tipping culture in Hong Kong too.

Hi Sam, out of sheer luck, I came across your recent video today and have enjoyed watching 6 or 7 episodes of yours in a row. The subjects, the eateries and people you chose to showcase are all spendid and I particularly like the pleasant, friendly and down to earth way you present them. As a viewer, I would hope to know a little more about you - your background, your association with Hong Kong, for example. Perhaps inserting a few minutes introducing yourself in your nexr video? 😊

Hi Ray, thanks for the very nice comment, glad you’re enjoying the channel! As far as background, I lived in Japan for 7 years and then came to HK 4 years ago with my then fiancé, now wife. She was born here so that is where our connection comes from. I’ve learned a lot about Cantonese culture by interacting with her family, especially since living in HK where we have so many aunties and uncles!

Sam, I am glad that you’ve found the best reason to stay in HK since 4 years ago. You have also chosen the best subject - food and restaurants - for many of your videos, as we the locals believe “we live to eat”. To fully integrate into the HK culture, trying to learn playing mahjong is recommended. It is no doubt in my mind the most interesting game ever devised. Your family and relatives may have shown you the basics from which you just have to practice more often.
