This is a place that I regularly visit almost every weekend and definately one of my all time favourite restaurant as a local Hong Konger since I was 16 (I'm now 52). Their food, their flavour which I love, has not change for 3 decades and remains delicious & high quality. I don't understand why people always criticise on their "no service" or "impoliteness", everyone knows cha chaan teng is a place just to feed yourself full stomach and then go; no one would expect they will have a 5-star hospitality as long as the food is delicious and serve in fast so that you can hurry back to work or go to school. They are not rude they are just busy and need to non-stop taking care of the full house customers. This place is a grow-up memory of many people as well, many of us start eating their food since we were kids, most importantly their delicious food is our comfort food and we love Australian Dairy.

Just bear in mind that it is not a leisure cafeteria. It is a small dining place for "grass roots" so they do not speak in delicated way. At the same time it is also crowded with lots of hot drinks and dishes circulating back and forth. So it is also a risky place. Hence the staffs there naturally speak in more forceful ways. But they generally are not rude or hostile to customers. They want customers to settle down quickly so they can make money faster (of course) and safer. When you have a reasonable expectation on them, it can be fun to dine in there.

It's like that in non touristy expresso places in Italy during the morning. Locals go in, down a quick expresso, maybe munch on something quick and GTFO and on with their day. The staff rush the tourists who go there to sip at the bar and chat and take up space. Staff isn't being rude. It's efficient. And you're not familiar with the culture and flow. As a fellow Brit, which tea u like best? Hk tea or proper English tea. Not rude to ask u to sit down, just for ur safety.
@HongKongHoods9 ай бұрын
That’s a great question, and a good ough one to answer. As far as day to day, i definitely enjoy English milk tea more as it’s a lot gentler and easy to drink. But as a treat and something to look forward to, HK milk tea all the way! 🫖

I've tried this kind of restaurant before. Rush, Rush, eat and get out! It made me very uncomfortable. No thanks.

Am I the only one wishing that they stay the way they are? Rude, snappy or whatever you call it, it's the soul of HK char chan teng. Imagine the waiter starts thanking customers and asking, "would you like some fries"... That's like being possesed by McDonald's.
@b.s.7626 ай бұрын
Not rude. Just don't want to be stalled by indecisive customer who make them lose business with people lining up.

Many HK Chinese said please don’t expect good service inside tea set restaurants as you are usually not required to pay 10% service charge. I can say it is a crazy ideology. But for this “Australian Cow Milk”, the service is much improved. You can eat at a lower pace. No rush.

I have heard others say that the service has improved here, and I can believe it- it's really not that bad...curt but not exactly "rude! Thanks for watching!

I donno what's so hype about these HK ice house restaurants, they are everywhere, look at the kitchen where they stock up Campbell soups, Del Monte creamy corn, Ovaltine & Horlicks. These food bank items u can find at the supermarket. Maybe u can find more delicacy at the local 7-11, such as curry fishball, tea eggs & shumai.

They are not rude actually, it’s their efficiency of working things, making sure the long waiting queue could be served as soon as possible, so no time for any fancy conversation or interaction. Glad you enjoy this unique HK experience, we Hong Kongers took 30 years to accustomed to it too😂

There already many food travelers been to that place and tried out those delicious breakfast that Sam ordered. For me personally, once I enjoy eating its meals I can care less about the service. And for those haven't been there yet, should already checked out the menu before hand and know what to order because can't afford to take too much time thinking and deciding once being seated there. I think I may go there by myself since seating one person is much easier in a long line. Since Australia Dairy Company haven been popular for a long time, the owner could have renovated the cafe to larger space to accommodate more people. I knew Jordan in Kowloon is not spacious. At least they could expand another cafe location or two in other part of HK in my opinion.
@HongKongHoods9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching, and yes- I agree that they might do well if they expand!

Interesting for timing the order, 12 seconds that is insane. Some people like me as a local do enjoy getting scold and wanted to be scolded by this place. One time I went there when I was pregnant and wanted to get scolded for a bit but they saw I was pregnant and told others off to get out of the way. I remembered that experience so dearly as I didn't get the scolding I was looking for and they treated pregnant woman very kind. I'm sad to see those internet armies making terrible comments on their mainland platform about all our restaurants and trying to influence what we have. The mainlanders are asking for 5 5-star hotel service in Cha CanTing.

I went there last month during my vacation. I don't think they are the rudest restaurant in HK. I can only say what kind of people you are receives what kind of service there. They did say 'thank you' to me. I also saw them seating a pregnant lady at the corner, so people can't get into her way.
@HongKongHoods9 ай бұрын
Agreed, I could definitely see some heart there. As I said in the video, I think this restaurant has a mix of really warm staff and “enforcer” types. I wonder if the owner does that on purpose 🤔

Many Hongkongers seems tolerate and get used to these bad manners but I'm not one of them. Especially this is not the Hong Kong in the 60's or 70's, the food and service should be improved but not remain the same, no wonder why so many locals rather go up north to Shenzhen nowadays.

While I do think that this kind of curt service is a cha chaan teng hallmark (and mostly harmless) I understand your sentiment. This Easter holidays, 2 million people have left the city, while only 800K have returned, according to recent figures. You may have a point!

They are not rude nor terrible at all. The waiters are just having strong personalities, but they are caring for elders and pregnant mom-to-be. If you want to taste a really rude steakhouse, there is one in Prince Edward - you stated the gravy type, they give you another one, and they are reluctant to change.

You did one extremely important thing right, which was to decide on your dish early. They don't want you to ask for recommendations, it's all on the wall. Be a snappy customer who orders right away. Then you'd be left to yourself to enjoy your meal. You may take more time to finish it, but it's really not the vibe there. You automatically speed up. And another cardinal sin in the joint is to stay even after you have finished. So get up quick once they give you the bill. Thanks for covering this very iconic restaurant which curiously showcases some very peculiar hongkong qualities, snappy, no non-sense, efficient, only show kindness when necessary, and the "warmth" that you mention.
