I remember being home in the afternoon (in about 1984) in Hong Kong, watching live on TV Margaret Thatcher signing the document to hand over Hong Kong back to China. I used to travel to and from Hong Kong and New Zealand twice a year while at boarding school (in New Zealand). I learned a lot, while in HK and while at boarding school in New Zealand (Nelson College). I was able to travel around the world before attending boarding school. Very blessed, to have lived in Hong Kong.

I looked into the history and there is one thing I dont understand. Why was it handed over to the mainland and not to taiwan?

Hong Kong is a part of Guangdong Province and the people speak Cantonese. I have relatives in both Hong Kong and China and they are closer than most foreigners believe. Hong Kong is a part of the Pearl River Delta. Don’t forget China only became communist in 1949. Why would Hong Kong be given to Taiwan when they are separated geographically by hundreds of miles?

Hong Kong was taken on a lease from China and Briton helped build Hong Kong from nothing turning it into one of the wealthiest places in Asia.I can remember watching the demonstrations on TV by people who wanted to rejoin China but not one wanted to be connected with the UK in any way, yet we put very few restriction on them and the people ran it almost like a free state which worked as it became a very ,very wealthy place and the way it distributed its money was left up to the people .It was even suggested that we extended the lease ,but the people of Hong Kong just didn’t want to know .

Not quite true. Many wanted to stay. In fact, many fled Hong Kong to come to the UK after it was confirmed that the handover was happening.
with in days after, helicopters were flying back and forth day and night over my city in British Columbia and the super rich were signing realestate deals in the chopper just by pointing. they bought everything! hard to find a sign on a store front that's in english

Darkest day was imperial colonism that screwed people all around the world

To think, the whole Chinese Communist issue might have been prevented if the Western Great Powers didn't force the Unequal Treaties upon China in the 19th century. What goes around, comes around, sadly. I can only hope that as the internet allows us to connect and learn with each other, we can somehow find a way forward beyond these colonial conflicts. So much changes, yet it all stays the same :(
