I would love, and totally watch and re-watch, an absurdly long breakdown of every part of the castle going through the design process and considerations. I assume that's coming at some point. For the thrones, my guess would be the king, queen, and the head of the king's council or some such similar role (think GoT's "Hand of the King").

It's a great castle with lots of attention to detail and everything. But one problem I have with it is that the Chapel is right under the dining room. If I'm not mistaken, than the medieval modus operandi was to have the chapel having no other building or quaters on top, at least for the choir/altar part. Sadly can't give you any sources as these informations are from conversations I had with staff at Burg Eltz.

This is amazing. It's almost as if it was designed by someone who knows medieval castles inside and out, rather than just having a vague idea of how a castle is supposed to look like! It would be really nice if game, film, and television executives went through the trouble of reaching out to knowledgeable people for consultation when designing stuff like this. The details, small and large both, really make the castle seem like a place that was built and developed organically, making the best use of the environment to build up its defenses. I would not want to try to take this castle. Draw bridge, gatehouse, narrow path to next gatehouse, even smaller space and a draw bridge until the next gatehouse, outer bailey, YET ANOTHER draw bridge to the main gatehouse, inner bailey, and then again a draw bridge until you can reach the keep... I think I would rather invade Russia in the summer, at least then I would have the chance to end the war by Christmas!

This is a really great model of a proper castle! I've watched quite a few videos/tutorials on how to model castles or castle elements in 3D software and I noticed that most people did not even have a fundamental understanding of how castles/castle elements work, what their purpose is and so on. Therefore, I really apperciate this model.

Soldier :We cant take this castle the machicolation are slaughtering the men, the dragon is massacring the troops, we need reinforcements. Commander :Then storm the outer gatehouse!. I think you should swap the Granary and the Blacksmith around. I've seen this on castles here in Denmark. The rather large castle of Hammershus on the Island Bornholm had a huge ganary built up to the inner bailey wall. This was used to collect grain as taxes from the farmers on the island. The castle ruins of Kalø north of the city of AArhus, had a rather small blacksmith, as a freestanding structure right past the outer gatehouse in the outer bailey. This was of course due to the inherent fire danger of the blacksmith, that you absolutely don't want to spread to nearby buildings. Other than this, it's a nice castle :)

Great hall has wooden floor. Hmm, I would imagine that the great hall would have floor tiles, marble floor, something along those lines. Despite that, this an awesome looking castle and a pretty cool model. Well done mate
@seanrea5507 жыл бұрын
wood is lighter and can support its self, a tiled floor over wood could also be possible but it would take more work and support and a stone floor would take a vaulted celling below to support the floor.
7 жыл бұрын
Right, yeah I forgot to say also that there are no vaulted ceilings in there also. I'd prob expect the great hall to be in the main keep. So you walk a straight path from the main gate to the hall. Furthermore, and this is a bit of nit picking and I may be clueless of this, but technically there are no chimneys or any other form of exhaust for the smoke that would be plentyfull coming from the kitchen and with the main hall just above it, you'd get all the smell from the kitchen and smoke in there. If there were a fire in the kitchen, the main hall's floor is at risk of burning down. I guess I would make the basement's ceilings vaulted, have the kitchen offset from the main hall and would have the kitchen closer to the water source. Cheers :)
@seanrea5507 жыл бұрын
if there are fire places then there should be chimneys. the advantages of wood for a floor is that you only need to build up a wall around the structure and where your main internal divisions are and you do not need to build up extensive supports in-between. arches vaults and domes would have been known about and used in some cases but it does take more material. in the end the design and lay out of a castle is up to the one planning and commissioning the castle and the tactical advisers and lead masons advising them on features that should be included or left out.
