Overcoming some cooling issues with a sweet set of Hood Vents from Rod Louvers. The XJs have some real issues with air flow through the radiator when your using them for purposes other than getting away from the Goonies.
Check out how installing these louvered vents from rodlouvers.com can help keep things cool and not break the bank.

Tip to anybody worried about going too far with the drill bit when poking the holes - tape up the bit to the desired length having a few wraps to bumpstop it when it hits the hood!

Suggestion: Take hood off, lay upside down on saw horses. Mark holes, drill and cut everything. Paint and then reinstall. No mess or worries about drilling into anything under the hood. No misplacement of location. Great video.

If you want to save some beer money on your hood vents, go to the dump and pick up some old microwaves with the vent louvers on the sides. The metal's probably about the same thickness. Cut it out, bolt it up, good to go! You can even have wood grain vents if you find an older nuker and you're not proud.

You guys crack me up, very entertaining videos. Just curious why you don't have Kokanee, or Molson Canadian, posters and other free graft posted on your walls. Not trying to bust your balls, The last time I drank an American beer, was in high school. Mid '80's beer strike with Molson and Labatts. When it was finally over, you could buy Rainer, or Olympia dirt cheap. Not sure if your familiar with the old Dodge bird bath hoods. Mid to late '70's, they added a recess in the hood on both sides of the center rib. It held water, looked kick ass, but when you popped open the hood, all the water ran down onto the unsealed distributer cap on the small blocks. Have pretty much all the parts to convert the '80 to the bird bath hood. I have a hood, the different hood latch, and wiper motor cover. How have people over come this, shy of converting to a big block with the distributer at the front.

You guys are pretty cool. I've never seen a way to maybe block off the driver side vent for water proofing, or maybe some kind of shield over the TPS sensor. I have lebaron vents and have gone through two sensors in four months...any ideas? Keep on jeepin. Randy.
@PabstBoys
@PabstBoys 9 жыл бұрын
Randy Beronia Haven't had that issue, but there is a type of fabric you can put on the inside of the vents. It looks a bit like black silk. It holds up to the heat, lets air through and keeps water out. I'd have to check with my snowmobile buddies to ask what its called, but they swear by the stuff.......

Good work...I no longer have my XJ but I do have a 93 suburban that I want to build a big Hummer style vent for..I have an idea of how to make it look good by bolting long angle iron to the hood for the sides and then bolting several short angle pieces to the long angle at the correct slant and then bolting 1 or 2 inch wide aluminum slats to the short angles..might seem a little strange for some people but since I'm adding a 6 inch lift and 37s and removing the rear windows Avalanche style and putting round headlights in, I believe I will love it..it cannot compete in looks with a 4dr jeep truck, but it will have a pretty cool and unique look...I just found your channel and like it..am I wrong to assume the asian guy is Mongolian?...they are some of the coolest looking people.

@PabstBoys

Doug Farmer Used one and 3/4 cans. With that stuff, I like to do one thin coat to start, then a heavier coat. after that, an over spray coat from about a foot and a half to two feet away to get a cool texture.
@WWarrior234

It looked way better than I anticipated. You don't think the rubberized paint will trap moor heat under the hood now? Especially with it being black.
@PabstBoys
@PabstBoys 9 жыл бұрын
Doug Farmer I don't think that'll be an issue. When we first got the jeep, it had insulation under the hood. Can't be worse than that........ And the vents actually help move quite a bit of air.

Which would cool more at slow or stopped speeds? Vents or electric fan w/ mechanical fan delete? Great video! Subscribed! :)
@PabstBoys
@PabstBoys 9 жыл бұрын
***** If it were one or the other, Vents would do a better job. The issue with XJs is that the air gets trapped under the hood at low speeds and cant pull through the radiator, even with an electric fan. Electric fans DO do a way better job at regulating temperature than the viscus type though. And actually give the engine less drag, so it will generate a bit less heat on top of it. We honestly want to go with both, just the vents were a good first step, and an easy mod.

+DualWieldViking That's a whole other beast. This kinda paint ain't meant for what we're using it for, but serves our purposes great. It's really great at protecting from rust, sealing up cracks 'n stuff, but we really liked the "Orange Peel" finish. If you want a good, long lasting paint, I'd say use something else. something more expensive.

As long as you have an air cleaner, there is minimal risk. The only common issue is water getting into your throttle position sensor, which doesn't really happen all that often, but it's possible. Even if that happens, it's easy to diagnose and simple to repair, so to most people it's worth the risk in exchange for vastly improved cooling.

Leak Seal by Rustolium

Dude... should'a fitted them first underside for clearance. Also, in that design what do you do for heavy rain and gettin all your s... wet under the hood? Don't think that design is too "keeping it mostly dry" friendly. 🤔

Water would get in them, yes, but who cares? Water isn't going to hurt your engine

Sherry Yong a bit of water might get in when you're parked, thats true. a bit. but no more than when you drive through a puddle. If you have ignition wiring problems, this may not help, But thats something else that needs to be addressed. lol

Sherry Yong Well I guess you will always have that 365th day of the year off from the rain lol.

Your engine is waterproof, dude. It already sucks water in through the grille any time you drive in the rain.

+T.O.P MIDDLE TN Sure! It's been holding up to the heat just fine. It's not in direct contact with any heat source other than the hot air moving through it.
