HOODED or DOWNTURNED eyes? STOP Doing your makeup like a KZbinr! Easy Eye Makeup Tutorial
How many of you have watched a makeup tutorial by a popular beauty guru, tried to recreate the look only to end up looking like a hot mess? Part of the reason could be because of your eye shape! Hooded eyes are challenging but they aren't a bad thing!!! Some of the most beautiful women in the world have hooded eyes!
Like many women, my eyes have gotten more hooded and downturned as I've gotten older. I have definitely had to change up the way I do my makeup. When we watch videos that have the same technique over and over, we start believing it's the ONLY correct way! This is simply not true.
I am not HATING on "gurus" because most of them do make it clear that they are not makeup artists.(Obviously I am aware there ARE other true artists on KZbin- Monika Blunder, Jordan Liberty, Melissa Alatorre, etc.) The non-MUA KZbinrs are very talented at putting makeup on their own faces, and who knows, maybe they WOULD do a great job on others! They also inspire me to try new things and I love them for that! My point is that when we watch so much of other people applying makeup to themselves, we forget that we all come in different shapes, colors and sizes. Makeup is not one size fits all, and the only thing I want to achieve with this video is helping people to experiment a bit more and try different methods to get YOUR PERSONAL best look! I hope you enjoy it!

So, so glad you made this video! As a working MUA for over 25 yrs, its nice to see someone who knows how to do "real" makeup. People get disappointed because they don't have the huge doe eyes like their fav youtuber and wonder why their makeup doesn't come out looking the same. Hooded eyes don't seem to be holding back stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, Michelle Williams, or Gisele Bundchen!

Oh my goodness, I turned 40 last year and was looking for some “updated” makeup inspiration. So I tried doing my makeup the trending look right now. I looked like a clown. It. was harsh. 🤦🏼‍♀️😂 Sooo grateful that “old school” technique is still relevant and that I’ve been doing it right for myself all these years. I will say, though, that I LOVED her advice on using the transition color LAST instead of first. I’m going to start doing that. I think it’ll make a huge difference. When she grabbed that flat line brush to do winged eyeliner the old way, I was like YES! 🙌🏼☺️

Ann Agresta It's amazing. In the "old days" for us over 35's, makeup counter ladies would hardly ever impose one look for everyone. Now unfortunately they do and reinforces the Instragram look which is a real shame as like someone else said, everyone starts looking the same

I love how you actually took time to explain everything step by step, instead of treating us like we are makeup professionals whose been licensed for ten years, I don't like the fact that they just explain the foundation and contour part , but when it comes to eyes, they're like just blend and wah-lah you're done. I had to google what each eye brush was made for and what transition colors & ect. were used for. Thanks for taking your time out of your day and being helpful. THIS is what a "makeup tutorial" should be like.

I don't typically comment but I wanted to let you know your video inspired me. A little back story: I'll be 36 in a couple of months. Just a couple years ago, I started to get into makeup. I've been frustrated since trying to figure out how to apply eyeshadow that didn't look like crap. I've pretty much given up and just use one color. I don't know if I necessarily have hooded eyes but I thought I'd try your technique. I received the makeup forever palette and I've been trying the looks that came in the guide. It's been a mess so I figured it couldn't get worse. Lol. It's now almost 1 am and I've tried your technique on both eyes with different color combinations. I'm legit so excited on how it turned out! I don't want to sound dramatic, but this video may have changed my life. I wish it was earlier in the night and I actually had somewhere to go. I feel so confident. Luckily we have plans tomorrow and I can't wait to try again. I'm also so excited that I can use a palette that I love and I'm no longer hating it bc I couldn't get it to work for me. I love the looks that a lot of youtubers do but I just can't recreate them bc of my lack of skill or the fact that I don't have a lot of eye lid area to work with. I try to use all 10 of the colors and I end up looking like a hot mess. Your video really hit home and made me realize that I need to do what works for me. It's definitely an aha moment for me and I thank you. One question. If I wanted to use pinks or purples, would I still want to use the darker color in the crease? I have the morphe 35f and I love the jewel tones but have no idea on what to do with them. Thanks again for this video. It's amazing how something so simple as learning a new makeup technique can increase my confidence.

Michelle Brown Hi Michelle! I don't know why I didn't see this comment before, I am so sorry! I definitely would have replied sooner!! I can't tell you how happy it made me to read this!!! If you are going to use purples and pinks, or any jewel tones, I would probably use them in the crease, but the blend out with a light neutral shade. It's all about taking the time to blend well when using more vibrant colors.

OMG!!! Thank you for stepping outside the box and showing us hooded peeps how to create a beautiful eye look!! I've done it the way other KZbinrs are showing nowadays, but it turned up looking muddy and unnatural. This is so doable and I love the tip on how to cut and place the falsies. I have very long eyelashes naturally, so I don't use falsies but I may try your tip for date night😏. THIS IS NOW MY GO-TO EYE LOOK!! I appreciate you teaching us how to do makeup RIGHT! I have found the easiest way to tightline - Pixi makes a black felt tip liner "cat eye ink." It's a slanted hard tip so you just stamp it under the lashes. It doesn't make my eyes water, takes 5 seconds, and stays put. It's a game changer for my hooded lids.

OMG, this video is such a breath of fresh air here on youtube. Thank you so much! The last thing I watch on youtube are eye look tutorials because they are usually done on big eyes with deep creases. I truly hope you will focus more on these kinds of videos, where you can share your knowledge with tips on how to work with our features and flatter them. I think there is a movement starting on youtube where people are getting sick of hauls and fabricated monthly "favorites" videos where the youtuber sneaks in a product sent to her so she can "rave" about it. Anyway, I just wanted to say this is actually how I usually do may eye look because the "youtuber" way is impossible with my no-crease eyelids.

This video made me subscribe to you. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH for making this. I'm 33, I'll be 34 in 2 days. I've always done my makeup, but not as intense, and as I've aged, became a tired stay at home mom & a wife, I've decided that I want to at least look presentable daily make so I've rediscovered that makeup makes me feel good, makes me more comfortable in my own skin. After watching thousands of these young ladies and men and their tutorials, and feeling like I look like I clown when I replicate their looks, I've kind of given up. The one day, I discovered a lady by the name Stephanie Marie. She's in her 40s, and also has hooded, downturned eyes. She wears soft, subtle makeup and I've learned a good amount of info from her, and I just really enjoy her videos in general. But today is different, today is magical because I discovered YOU. This single video has helped me tremendously and I can't wait to do my face tomorrow morning and incorporate your eyeshadow lesson that you just bestowed upon me. From the bottom of this tired mom who just wants to feel good in my own skins heart, THANK YOU. ❤👏👏

I have been trying out "hooded eyeliner" tutorials for weeks, and because my eyes are now more downturned and hooded (age 40) I always end up with thick ole wings that are of the Amy Winehouse proportions. Not great for work. This tutorial seems to make a lot more sense, although personally I think I will have to stick to matte shades. Cant wait to try it out. Thanks Risa!

Wow!! This is the FIRST makeup tutorial I've ever watched and you're GREAT at explaining things. I've been to makeup boutiques and asked for help with my eye makeup and they look at me like I'm some kind of crazy person (not to mention how difficult it was to even ask in the first place). I so WISH I could find someone willing to help with my disgusting face as I'm aging. In the past, I was a cosmetic salesperson representing Ultima II, Charles Of The Ritz, and the like and I did makeovers. I NEVER made a customer feel uncomfortable or intimidated, or tried my best not to. I don't own any eyeshadow brushes as I still use the sponge applicators and I think I'll have a learning curve ahead of me. But, I'm definitely going to try your technique! Thank you so much for sharing this awesome tutorial!!🤗

I just found your channel in my recommended videos and I'm so glad I did. I am in my late 20's and have hooded eyes. I have never really fallen into the fad of how most youtubers do their eye makeup, while it looks nice, it's just not for me. But, upon watching your video I literally, for years have done my eye makeup exactly how you showed. Minus doing the line with the shadow to show where to start your crease because I have always eye balled it. But I was so happy to see that I do my makeup how a professional does, and they recommend that method. I have found recently that taking my crease color a bit above my crease, and not putting it directly into it really helps that cease color show and my eye makeup really does look better. Thank you so much for this, you are absolutely stunning, I love the lip color and will be watching plenty more of you. You are so helpful. -AnnaNicole

Great video Risa! I have very hooded eyes and I watch ALL the KZbin makeup tutorials but I apply my makeup totally different then everyone I know. Because of my hooded eyes I can not apply my mascara last (as all KZbinrs do) because it will get everywhere on my hooded eyelids. I actually START with applying my mascara and then I apply the rest of my eye makeup! When I am done with my eye makeup I apply 1 extra (thin!) layer of mascara to cover any eyeshadow that may have fallen on my lashes to make them dark black again. This works fantastic and I can recommend it to everyone with hooded eyes! (I feel I have sold the goose with the golden eggs for free, haha, but I hope it helps some of you!) XO 💜💁

I'm so happy I found your video. I just turned 49 last month. Most of my life I've never enjoyed makeup, and used as little as I could get away with when Leaving the house. The last three years have marked many changes for me in my life. My husband and I have been on a journey to become healthier. As a result, we've both lost significant weight. This change has made me feel better about myself, and given me a desire to improve my makeup skills. I've watched so many videos, with beautiful makeup. I've begun to play more with my eye makeup, but I can never duplicate the looks I love. I decided to try videos for people closer to my age. I was so disappointed, thinking I'd waited too late to play with fun makeup. According to the videos for women my age, I should only use neutral matte shadows. I love your video, because I can see it's all in the techniques more so than the colors. Thank you for keeping your instructions easy to follow. I've now subscribed and look forward to learning more from you.

Before KZbin I always knew makeup was relative and unique to the person wearing it but when you get caught up in all the beautiful tutorials available now, you kind of lose sight of that and start trying to make your eyes something they're not. This is a good reminder that I can still do fabulous looks, I just have to tailor it to MY eyes, not a carbon copy of someone else's.

The BEST video on hooded, Down-turned eyes. I too am tired of cookie cutter looks. I remember in my teens a makeup artist telling me how to correct my eyes. I didn't know anything was wrong with them! I am now 62, and finally love the eyes God gave me. Thanks for showing me how to make them look their best!

LOVE LOVE LOVE! I am self taught, like you said, BEFORE internet videos and for 10 years just always did what worked for my eyes. Ive been watching these typical hype videos the last few years and think "oh I do it all wrong" and I try their way but it doesn't work for me at all. My self esteem and confidence- in the toilet. Now becoming a professionally trained MUA this year I LOVE that I am seeing more and more professionals coming out of the woodworks saying do THIS -NOT Instagram/YT.. All the things I have been doing for years, is actually right for me and I FINALLY feel confident about my techniques and my self. I know those videos help a lot of people feel more confident but I think there is a lot of people who, like me, has their confidence tanked by these influencers.. SO THANK YOU so much for this video!!

Thanks for this video, because this is almost exactly how I do my eye makeup, and after seeing all these KZbinrs tutorials, I've started thinking that I'M the one doing it all wrong!! I've been doing makeup since I was 14 (I'm now 34) I also studied makeup in the early 2000's, and THIS is the way I was taught, way back before all this contouring & highlighting etc. My makeup most of the time looks bad before it looks good lol. After seeing this I feel reassured! Thank u!

Hi I'm new to your channel and just subscribed because of this great video! Could u pls let me know if there's anything I need to adjust for my different kind of hooded eyes? My eyes are not down turned at all, just very hooded on the middle part. So I could see inner & outer lid only when I open my eyes. Another thing I dislike is the very fleshy part on top of my crease. It looks like the fleshy part is touching my eyelashes. Also...I don't have much space between my eyebrows and lash line. So crease color tend to reach my brows. Pls teach me what to do. Appreciate your detailed video. Thanks a lot.
@RisaDoesMakeup
@RisaDoesMakeup 7 жыл бұрын
karyn chong Hi! When you don't have a lot of lid space you really want to focus on your lashes, and the tight lining technique I demonstrated in the video. Also, groomed brows make a huge difference on hooded eyes. Keep in mind that light colors bring things forward and dark makes them recede. Try using a medium toned matte taupe on you eyelid and up onto the crease. I am going to look for a model with a similar eye shape to yours because it's so much easier for me to demonstrate a technique than to try and explain it. Thank you for watching!!

your eyes sounds like mine and the best way I have found is to love and embrace chubby eye pencils, line your eyes like normal and just take a brush and smudge all of it. I add shadow sometimes and work that into the line as well. I gave up on palettes and transition shades becasue I can never see them. Sephora has good pencils but I love the Rimmel one in bad girl bronze. girl, just love your "bedroom eyes"..many models have hooded eyes

Risa, this is so helpful! When I was younger, I always wondered why older women don’t wear eyeliner. Now that I’m in my 50’s, I know...When the eyes start to turn downward, the whole shape is different, and eyeliner isn’t as simple as following the lash line anymore. I love the look you created, and the colors are beautiful. You are a very good teacher.

I pretty much do it like this already. Good to see my technique confirmed by someone else lol. My eyes are way more hooded than yours. I'm 48 years old and it runs in the family, and the skin to the outside of my eyes sags enough that wings are just a no go entirely.
@RisaDoesMakeup

It's nice to see something different and informative rather than watching someone slap it on and just give you the colors they're using, especially when everyone is so different. Not all of those vague videos that are so often done, are ones that everyone can use. Thanks so much for being informative and different!

This was probably the most helpful tutorial i have ever watched! I am over 40 with very hooded eyes and 95% of the tutotials out there don't work for me. And I agree, in the KZbin/Instagram world there seems to be such a cookie cutter approach to doing makeup. I'm an older gal who is new to the wide world of makeup. I've always had hooded eyes, but it has definitely gotten worse, the older I've become. I'm to the point where in the center of my lid, there's no eyelid to be seen. I very much appreciate this tutorial. I used to tightline both lids, when I was a teenager and I definitely think this will be something I will start doing again, if I really feel the need for the liner. I really liked your tip about doing the transition shade last. I have been struggling with making all these colors show up on my eyes. This video is wonderful! Thank you so, so much!

Wow! This is exactly the way (& reason)I started doing my makeup recently. To be able to achieve a harmony looking eyeliner and eye shadow look that would flow together just by using the lower lash lined as a guide has changed my makeup game,from novice to look like I know what I'm doing level ( not yet pro )... Proves to show our hooded eye gal struggles. Thanks for posting this up & putting it out there because this method has helped me (tremendously) & would help many other hooded eye makeup novice looking for methods of perfecting/mastering either their winged liner &/or eye shadow techniques.
