After seeing collectors talk about this line for decades, I've noticed the Fandom seems to be separated into 3 "Layers": • The 1982-to-1985 Layer- These collectors were old enough to be there on the ground floor of the line when it debuted in 1982 and measure every year against that first and second year. If it doesn't "jive" with the original early years, then it's not really G.I. Joe to them. • The 1986-to-1990 Layer: This is the Layer I occupy as I was born in 1979 and too young to get into G.I. Joe when it debuted in 1982. My older cousin got me into G.I. Joe when he grew older and got out of it in 1986 and gave his surviving stuff to me. As a kid getting into G.I. Joe in 1986 at age 6, I always thought the stuff he gave me was more boring and not as cool as the "current" stuff I was seeing on store shelves. This Layer is when stuff started to get more "Military Fantasy" with lots more sci-fi elements that the earlier Layer kids/collectors start to grumble about. • The 1991-to-1994 Layer: This layer is the layer when the first layer kids/collectors really start to grind their teeth and get mad because it was a drastic departure from what the line was like in 1982. But, yeah the world itself changed in 10 years and war toys stopped being something parents wanted their kids to play with, so to stay relevant and survive, G.I. Joe had to adapt. 1994 was really the swan song of the line as there really aren't alot of good things to come from that year. A few cool toys here and there but the 3 vehicles the Battle Corps line got were sub par compared to other years and the figures were weird. I used to hate the weapons trees too, mostly because the figures lost their unique accessories that really defined their characters back from 1982-to-1991, but then something occurred to me. In the 1980's Hasbro made accessory packs with recolored versions of accessories as a way for kids to get extra weapons and/or replace lost ones. Well these weapons trees are kind of an evolution of that. And as for the totally bright colors of a flame thrower as a toy vs a real life solider? Drab colors don't really "pop" out on the toy shelves and kids are VERY much attracted to colors. The neon colors of alot of the 90's figures turned that dial up a little too high, but I laugh when Blowtorch or Sci-Fi get a pass but 90s neon figures are shot in the face. 🤣 They're all toys made and sold to children, if kids bought them then Hasbro and their retail partners were happy. I think that the Ice Cream Soldier, batshit crazy name aside, is a really cool looking action figure and it being so batshit crazy is part of the reason I like it LoL. It's 100% absurd and I dig it. 😎

What's funny, is I too recall that. Though I remember the series he was from kind of getting back to some of the things that made it great, so to speak. Where it was only like 12 figures and it gave you an actual chance to get them, versus what was the entirety of the Battle Corps line up to that point. Also, I don't think they had the tree with just a bunch of random weapons on them either. I recall being rather glad about such a move (even if the file cards were way smaller). Then... Nothing.

Hilarious sketch in the middle and freak-out at the end. The 90s figures are totally inappropriate for a military toy line, but I do think it's interesting that they seem to reflect wider trends in 90s design, with biomorphic forms and day-glo colours.

Awesome!!!!! Really looking at the figure, it would have fit better in Star Brigade. The upper legs of Ace v1, the sealed helmet providing air/oxygen. AND a definite repaint. Maybe white and grey, drill a hole in that upper arm piece and attach a hose or something. As is...(retch). Do not hate on Blowtorch. I loved the toy as a kid. The yellow with red padding was never questioned. I saw them as cautionary colors. The backpack, helmet, facemask, sculpt over all, I loved. Now I have to see why Zandar is down there!

Kind of hate to admit it, but I owned and liked this character as a kid. I was a fan of any character that had a full helmet on. Looking back, he is pretty bad. But that is mostly due to the name and color scheme. This was also around the time I started to lose interest in toys. Not sure if it was just a natural part of growing up or if it was because this was becoming the standard for toys. Now I collect some as an adult.

I agree the Shock Viper looks much better even thought I do not have one in my collection. Also Shock Viper has the same accessories (minus the missile launcher) in black and they look really nice. Ice Cream Soldier does have an appearance as a non-speaking background character in one of the Devil's Due G.I. Joe comics during a dream that Hawk has. I am guessing this was a deliberate joke on the writers part.

a few things. 1. congratulations to general hawk for defecting to cobra. 2. the my little ponies would never associate with the likes of those figures. 3. blowtorch was a nice figure, yes the red/yellow color scheme was too much (looking on him now), but you could use him as a firefighter like barbecue instead. 4. when is gi joe the the animated movie 2 coming out. the plot goes like this. crystal ball, raptor, zandar, ice cream soldier, big boa, croc master, voltar, and undertow form their own team and because they are easily over looked they waltz right through the gi joes main gates and slaughter all the joes. the cobra organization is stumped as to who did this they search and search to no avail, until the rag-tag band of misfits saunter through cobra island butchering the cobra legions. the world then falls into chaos and the only way to save the day is for matt trakker and the M.A.S.K. group to take this new threat on.

Maybe they are not realistic, maybe you don't like them but your reviews about the 90's GIJoe are probably the funniest. The Joe's and the Cobras has had an exclusive month on your channel and I think that the 90's GIJoe toyline deserves too an special month of funny reviews. Being more serious, I don't think that in 1994 this figure was sold in spain. I don't remember watching them in the stores. The last Joe's I can remind are the Street Fighter GIJoes and maybe, I'm not sure, the ninja force. Probably I'm wrong, this was exported but at this time I prefered my super famicon (or super nintendo in spain) instead of my GIJoes. Not sure... Keep on the good work. Your reviews are great! PS: Maybe you hate him but one of the 90's GIJoe in the DIC series that I like is Metal Head. His weapons aren't realistics but his look rocks!

Would you believe me that I like the design? Not the colors, as they are as gaudy as they could be. In fact, it brings to my mind the Lanard Star Force figures, which I liked and pretended were robots. XD As for this figure... just imagine it in grey camo instead of orange, with the belts and whatnots done in dark grey and green instead of yellow and it would look heaps better than it does with its current coloring. Oh, and for the name... Furnace (Subject to change in case another figure already has it). Let me know what you think of this, and what would you have done to make it awesome if you had been in the shoes of Hasbro's executives. Well, besides canning all the bright-colored lines and returning to the roots, that is. ;) Loved your review, by the way. I hope to see more from you in the future. =D

Took me two years to fess up to this: I really like this figure. But I never even knew his name was "Ice Cream Solder", never read the card he came on. I didn't play with him for realism, but compare this guy to a character like Iron Man; color scheme is not far off, then add a jet pack back pack or a pack easily pretended to be one and a cool gun, and you had super hero armor for Duke or Flint or another Joe. Also take into account actual Marvel action figures of the times and the articulation of G.I.Joe figures were so much better! So, that's what I did, I picked out completely armored figures to be the "jet pack armored battle suits" for other Joes and when there was trouble they suited up and were a super hero team. Ice Cream Soldier (again, *never* called him that) was usually the team leader's battle suit. The fact that I was 19 in 1994 when this figure came out...you ever watch the Ted Knight show were he was a cartoonist and played with a "Cosmic Cow" puppet to help him think of ideas? Same thing...yup, exactly the same thing, yup, yup, yup...
