Hoodwinked 2 is worse in every way…

Today we sat down and watched Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil. Yes it's actually called that, but not everyone knows so the title just says "2". In this "animated" movie, Little Red Riding Hood fights the evil Hansel and Gretel with the help of her spy organization the HEA. But you probably wouldn't know that by watching the movie, because the plot is harder to follow than driving directions from apple maps.

While training with a mysterious covert ops group known as the Sisters of the Hood, Red (Hayden Panettiere) gets an urgent call from Nicky Flippers (David Ogden Stiers), head of the top-secret Happily Ever After Agency. A wicked witch (Joan Cusack) has kidnapped Hansel (Bill Hader) and Gretel (Amy Poehler), and Red's the only one who can save them. Apparently the only reason the first Hoodwinked was so funny was because the movie's director, Corey Edwards, had to fight off The Weinstein Company at practically every turn. He wrote an early draft for Hoodwinked Too and The Weinsteins just took it and ran with it, including the now infamous gay stereotype troll that wasn't in the original draft.

Fun weird fact: The people who made this movie knew that even with the bigger budget they were stuck in a situation where upgrading the character designs might cause an issue of people NOT recognizing that this was a sequel to Hoodwink which is why there is a massive disconnect because of the new characters models looking better than the models of the characters from the first. And holy shit, they rhinos were Naruto running. Fuck it, I love this movie now. 13:39 Ladies and gents. The most awkward and uncomfortable Nazi joke in a kids movie from the 2010s. ENJOY!

I remember watching this movie. It was almost like a fever dream. When I was 6, my dad's coworker was hosting a party at his house. My dad told me to hang out with some of his coworker's kids. They were all older than me (about 11-13 or so), so I felt intimidated, and I probably annoyed them very quickly. As a joke, they decided to watch this movie. While they were all laughing at how bad it was, 6-year-old me was just confused, and questioning my life. And keep in mind, this was kind of late at night, and I was getting tired, making the experience even weirder!

They didn't even try with the "You've been hoodwinked, two!" line for this movie... the first one built suspense with that song and it just transitioned into the "You've been hoodwinked, baby!" line way better. This movie's take on it is basically, "Oh! We need the twins to say, 'You've been hoodwinked!' but we already wrote the script. Let's just shove it in with the reveal that they are the villains."

Funny thing to me is, the concept isn't too bad (it's not as good as the first, but it's not HORRIBLE), but the falling point of this movie is the script, it feels like just a first draft. Ironically, I feel like both of these movies teach similar messages: For the first, you don't need the best animation to release the best script; and for the second, slightly better animation STILL NEEDS A GOOD SCRIPT.
