FYI for the "Guys and Gals", while Louis IS correct that 'people are to blame for letting Walmart enter their community' it's important to understand that corporations "never sleep". Some of what they do is planned for years in advance (including put some of their profits into politics (which is why Walmart doesn't pay Federal Taxes) and into writing the Laws themselves) but most of it is a Turd in accounting or legal who wants a corner office and stock options so they look for new ways to exploit opportunities If you do read in your newspaper about Walmart coming to your town, that doesn't mean that the fight is over. Sooner would have been better but Walmart gets taxpayer funds to build a store that they wanted to build anyway, then they pay store employees poorly to sell items that don't last. It's capitalism run amuck since Reagan was the first Republican to start unraveling FDR's New Deal. The New Deal provided government protection for people from unchecked capitalism. Sounds like Walmart and the other corporations that donated to politicians got their money's worth.

Atlantic City isn't even as big as a mile. Literally right across the street from the casinos (which are on the beach), you see the run down desperation and bad neighborhoods. All of the money goes to the state (the northern part). Right now, the city is going to shut down for 2 months, because they're out of money, and the state won't give back even a small amount of the billions generated there.

At the end of the day, however, the end choice does come down to the consumer. If consumers chose to spend the extra money to the mom and pop shop to ensure the money stayed in the community. Maybe it's not just their fault, but they certainly owe a fair share of the responsibility.

Think about it this way, though, why is there a need to give the companies those subsidies? It's because Americans demand cheap goods. If the consumer bought things from the mom and pop shop, then Walmart wouldn't need those government subsidies because Walmart wouldn't exist. I agree with you that we need to stop subsidies, but I'm also on Louis' side. It's our fault for not wanting to buy things when they cost just a little more.

Comparing Chinese wages to American wages as if they are an apples to apples (pun intended) is astoundingly ignorant. China was in a communist/socialist nightmare for decades, many people lived on next to nothing. I lived in China 6 years, the apple employees make way more than $8 a month.
@ski4life1912 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. Is 30c off really worth destroying the economy, the local businesses, and keeping 3rd world countries from developing? If you seriously think so, you are sick. Just pass out on that waffle maker and all those 30c you save will be made up for.
@maki012912 жыл бұрын
Except the human factor doesn't disappear, "everybody does it this way" doesn't make your decision to disregard the needs of your community for the sake of saving a few bucks in your own wallet any less shitty. The system works the way the people will it to work, if enough people were willing to aid their community by spending locally even if it costs more, the American economy wouldn't be in the shithole it's in today. People should take responsibility for their own stupid choices.

Most comedians have had a college education if not an Ivy League graduation and if they're shit it's cos they're dumbing down to get cheap laughs, it's people like Patrice & Louis who are as much social commentators as great comics - comedy should tell the truth no matter how uncomfortable - what yer gonna go to a politician?

Louis CK is delusional about human behavior and his romantic nostalgia for ma and pa business. You don't have to like Walmart or Amazon (or now defunct Blockbuster Video), but they offered something better than the competition. Better prices, better selection, etc. That's it. When you're rich and have all the time in the world because you work an hour a day in a nightclub, then it's easy to criticize other people for their choices - choices Louis CK doesn't have to make.

Louis is a little mistaken here. The pay for the average joe has not gone up with the cost of living. In the '60s you COULD go to a local store because jobs paid you enough and prices weren't as fucking ridiculously inflated as they are now (7 dollars for a premium burger at McDonalds? Fuck you. 200 dollars for a concert ticket? Fuck you). These days minimum wage pays shit (minimum wage used to support a single person in the '60s and you could afford your own apartment) and rent is so expensive compared to the '60s that people are literally forced to buy shit at Wal-Mart so they have enough money left for gas that week. It's not the people's fault - its goes back to the corporations for fucking this country up since the '70s, and then ultimately goes to the government for being lobbied and bought and not stopping the outsourcing of ALL OUR FUCKING JOBS and not stopping crazy fucking salaries that NOBODY deserves and then giving us the remaining crumbs. People should not vote or work. Get some balls people. Protest and start a band like we did in the '60s. Fuck this shit. You people really want to do the man's work for the man? These politicians and corporate asswipes aren't going to change the system for the better until bullets start coming their way.

@GreenStarForMayhem What do locals do when the mom and pop shop goes under for whatever reason? new businesses take the place of older ones all the time. If people wanted to shop at private businesses there would be more of them. None of your boohooing about capitalist greed will change that. Louis' argument was laughable.. "You used to be able to go into a different, weird bookstore to get different books" Great, Louis I'm gonna stop going to b&n because of that convincing argument.
