The whole song is Canon in D. Pay attention to the second half after the harmonica solo. That’s the melody of Canon. It’s not just the chord progression. The “hook” of the song that he’s singing about IS the chord progression. The song is about how it doesn’t matter what he sings because people will buy the music based on the catchy hook. “When I’m feeling stuck and need a buck, I don’t rely on luck because the hook brings you back.” When John Popper needs money, he can write a catchy song using that chord progression, that hook, and it’ll bring you in and get you to spend money. Hook is their best selling single for a reason, and the whole song is calling out fans of pop music. It is one of the most brilliant songs of the 20th century.

Or they used to remove you from the stage with a literal hook, maybe that’s what he meant.

I was taught a hook is any catchy phrase ,beat ,or run. Can be on any instrument and any progression.
@douglasmurata4945Ай бұрын
@@jayclark5912 That’s what A hook is, but this song is about THE hook. It’s about using the chord progression from Canon in D as a shortcut to writing popular music, and Popper makes that clear by making the second half of the song more of Canon in D than just the infamous 4 chords.
@jayclark5912Ай бұрын
@douglasmurata4945 just learned it on my acoustic. Know any other songs that use it.?
@douglasmurata4945Ай бұрын
@@jayclark5912 There are so many. You can search for "Pachelbel Rant" for a video from 18 years ago (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJXbnImHrpyEgq8). Or you can look up "Axis of Awesome 4 chord song" for a video from 15 years ago (kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6HMlaKhltCIaqs). Both of those videos are about songs that use the Canon in D hook. The only difference between those songs and Hook is that Blues Traveler is actually calling out the trend of using Canon. The lyrics in Hook start out "It doesn't matter what I say as long as I sing with inflection" because Popper is saying that the lyrics don't matter. The hook, those four chords, will be what sells the song.
@thelastgeneration58622 жыл бұрын
"No matter how much Peter loved her, what made the Pan refuse to grow Is that the hook brings you back..." I find deep spiritual meaning in the song beyond the obvious referral to the hook of the musical progression. This song spans time and space to whisper truth to those with ears to hear. Great job, and thanks for bringing this masterpiece back into the collective!

Ahhhh this all makes sense now. I heard (somehow for the first time) g love' 'Just Fine'. I was a pretty big Blues Traveler fan in HS and Four is seared in my brain, so when Zi heard the song I recognized the melody as 'Hook'. I even looked up if there was a reason why it exists, or if there was a collab, if it was an intentional riff, blatant cribbing, etc. I guess I was right on all counts as they both used pachelbel. I guess nothing is truly new under the sun.
