Kilawin is sort of like cerviche..just depends on what is used (citrus or vinegar) with Kilawin having so many variations as it was first out of the box in pre-colonial Philippines. . Both are good...just depends on how much beer is available to drink at the time:). Just discovered your channel and hope to start surf fishing myself (collecting the hardware and doing the research on how it is done:).

I loved the video man. Great to see you fishing with your Dad! My Grandpa taught me to surf fish years ago. I haven't been in quite a while. It would be nice to drive on the beach, but we can't do that down here in Orange/LA county. I would be nervous about it even up there. Went to Pismo about 47 years ago with my Uncle and he let me drive his Manx dune buggy on the beach at 10 years old. I still remember people getting stuck crossing a creek somewhere to get to the dunes. Do you still have to cross a creek?
@Hook2Cook

One more question what line do you use and what pound test? I use a 10 lb braid with a 4 or 6 lb monofilament leader about 2-3 ft long tied directly to my main line. West of braids being a smaller diameter then monofilament it gives you almost double the line capacity on your reel. If you fish a Carolina rig you can put the egg weight and bead on the braids stand up then a swivel anti the monofilament or fluorocarbon leader to the opposite end of your swivel.
@Hook2Cook
@Hook2Cook 5 жыл бұрын
Scott Rice 30# braid. 20-25# floro leader about 9 feet long joined by an fg knot. These thicker leaders foul up on trebles a lot less and have a smaller chance of snapping on a bad cast losing a $20 lure

Hey there. Jeff "Mr. Striper" from the bay area. I'm planning on possibly heading down this Thursday, Friday and Saturday with my wife to do some exploring and perch fishing. I was hoping to get a fishing report and some pointers for fishing your area? We mostly catch and release and only keep what we eat. Looks like the water is going to be flat with a.m. high tides. Does this rain dirty up the water much down there? With all the clay cliff sides up here the water gets dirty pretty quick. Thanks for posting all the reviews on the Calissas and the Lucky Craft. They work great up here in nor-cal! Tight lines to ya!

I think its the energy that comes with the beach. Its just really hard to be negative when your feet are in the sand and the waves are rolling in. Even people that don't fish are always stopping to ask what I'm fishing for, do I ever catch anything, etc. If I'm lucky enough to catch something while they are standing there I get a kick out of their reaction...they are amazed that there are fish in the ocean (ha).

Nice vid Edward! I first learned to fish from my grandfather, he was also the one who taught me to fly fish at a young age. My favorite way to fish is still fly fishing for trout. But because I’m on the coast, I frequently fly fish for perch and throw flash minnows as well. But you gotta give perch fly fishing a try! Keep it up.
@Hook2Cook
@Hook2Cook 5 жыл бұрын
I have been seeing people fly fish perch! It's a crazy concept with sinking line compared to trout and the floating! Im so glad to hear about you learning from your grandpa. I swear i think a huge reason I fish is because I know it's something I can do until Im really old and maybe... just maybe master before I die. XD

I would like to try fishing for surf perch but I have a question about something. I live in Bakersfield CA and do a lot of trout fishing one thing I started do with the fish I catch is stun and cut the gills to bleed them out then put them in a ice slurry with a lot of salt to chill them down as soon as possible. My ice slurry is two bags of ice in a ice chest 1 bags and a good two hands full size of rock salt then I add the second bag of ice and two more handfuls of rock salt allow this to set or a few minutes then add just enough water to create a very icy and salty slurry. I have found by doing this the meat tastes better and is a lot more firm. Have you ever tried this with surf perch?

Hay your dad has the right rig, have him try taking one of the bait fish and cut into strips about 3" x1" start at 1/2" from one end and run the hook and eye clear through the strip and just the hook point through the bottom of the strip about 1" from the bottom so it forms an s it will swim on it's side like a wounded fish. This will get the 12 -16" er's. Right behind the incoming waves. Good luck hope it works for you. I use surf fish and it works great and gets the big ones.
@Hook2Cook
@Hook2Cook 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Gary! I will also try that! I’d imagine larger predatory fish are more likely to hit that too. Like striper and halibut. Why’d you say you “used to” surf fish?

@@Hook2Cook Haven't been able to get the time. I'm about 70 or so miles from the coast. 2014 broke my back spent 6 months in the hospital, had to learn how to walk all over again. Had to retire in the hospital (turned 65). Use to go to Orick CA. Fresh water lagoon (now a state park) lots of regs now can't drive on the beach anymore so it's a long hard walk through the soft sand. Not to many places you can drive on the beach up here in northern CA anymore. Love to Perch fish and dip surf fish (smelt). I tried surf fishing for the 1st time this past Monday. It was a disaster. Braided line is a bad choice, it tangled in my swim bait over and over again, and when I switched to a Carolina rig I got endless wind knots. I'm going to change to monofilament and try again this weekend, unless the waves are still 8 to 10 feet. That was dangerous.
@Hook2Cook
@Hook2Cook Жыл бұрын
It sounds like conditions were the culprit, not the gear. Watch the wind and the wave power. Look up your area at surf-forecast.com and look up the wave power halfway down the page. If it’s over 500 it’s considered strong. It’s been over 2000 pretty regularly as of late. You’re not going to get as good distance with mono.

I bought my Honda at your place. Last two times. I do need a truck. Needs to pull a boat 19’ so see what you can do. I fish the surf also. Have a good one

That is awesome bro! Glad to know the Honda family is watching the fishing family and ultimately combining! We have a few options. Come by and ask for Edward Tomilloso

This was filmed early January. None in my area were pregnant. But when I do catch pregnant fish they do go back

Cool to see you slamming the slabs in the wintertime instead of most of these marbleheads that go during March thru June when the Perch are spawning, real fishermen catch them perch in the fall and winter months. Any marblehead can race his LuckyCraft thru the holes snagging the big females just sitting there. Props dudes, i fished up and down that beach for years.

You know how it is! Not a whole lot biting other than perch and trout that time of year 😅

I use 30 lb braid with 20 lb leader to keep it from tangling on itself. lighter line for the leader can foul up on the hooks
