This is so helpful thank you. I’m a concert pianist/teacher and have decided to start learning cello. Though for violin, this is still the same concept and the exercises you shared have been great - thank you!

This is a great video! I'm currently working on Minuet #3. You covered the what and how very well. One thing I'd love to know is why we do these?

Thanks, James! The purpose of hooked bowing is both stylistic and practical. It gives the light staccato effect while allowing the bow to follow a specific direction & pattern. Hope that helps!

Why hooked - what does it refer to?

It's just a term we use to describe the technique. Not sure of the background of the name itself, but I'm sure the internet can help you out with that!

I always understood it as a technique applied to dotted rhythms (e.g. dotted 8th - 16th), a bowing shape which in my mind’s eye ends up looking like a hook 🪝

Thanks! I started playing violin and viola about 65 years ago, with a 30 year hiatus due to life's responsibilities. Now I play viola in our church orchestra, with "coaching" to correct my bad habits. My coach uses the names of bowing techniques that I never learned. I look forward to the rest of your videos on the subject.
