As someone who has been a fly casting for many years, I've seen all of the usual mistakes. In this video we'll look at five things that any Spey caster can do, that will produce an automatic improvement in their casting.
In my 30 video series on Efficient Spey Casting, I cover off all of these points at different videos and at different times. I've brought these five tips together in one video, to emphasize their importance.
In my other Spey casting videos I've had numerous comments from anglers who talk about the significant improvement they've discovered as tehy've learned to adopt these good habits.
See what these five tips can do for you.

Hi Peter. As a newbie Spey caster last year, I understood maybe 70% of what you were saying. Now that I've got a second season under my belt, I understand most of it. All that remains is to absorb that understanding into the physical world! I have high hopes for next year! I can't thank you enough for putting out this series. I will be referring to it over and over again.

Love your videos of fly fishing I have a tense cast at times but I’m going to remember this video to help me. Got the Airflo sniper line for my small highland river and I’m hooked on this line thanks for your previous videos on this !

I pick up 2 handed rods and im crazy fast, i pick up a single handed rod im smooth and slow. I think is the constant tension from single hand rod and the fly line in the hand for hauling.

Just apply your double haul experience to two hand casting. Regardless of style, we should be able to feel what is going on.

@hooked4lifeca I try, and I just have a hard time with it, I think it's the fast action from my 8wt single hander and then down to my 3wt spey rod. One is fast action, and the other is like wet noodles. The load is just different, and your advice about tempo makes a lot of sense, I blow my D loop on my pull back, and I realized I'm not looking back and just relying on feel. Im ready to get on the water this week so I can get more work done.

Developing "muscle" memory happens best when we go slow. All fly casting requires acceleration. If we start fast we have to get faster so our ultimate speed is too fast. Start slow and leave yourself room to accelerate. Took me a long time to learn that......😁

I have really enjoyed this series Peter and have learned a lot from here on my THCI journey. Your diagrams, explanations and demonstrations are exemplary in their clarity and brevity.

Can the spey method be successful in deeper, high flow rate streams? I’ve tried it on the Manistee River in Michigan, but, no matter how heavy of a tip I use, I feel like you can never really get down to where the fish are by swinging. Many people use an indicator with shot to get flies down. Videos showing success with this style in fast and deeper rivers, like in MI, are hard to come by. What are your thoughts?

Definitely. If you can get halfway down the water column, you are in the game most of the season. Unlike bead fishing, the streamer pulls the fish into a chase. A lot of times having that distance for the fish looking up at the fly is a trigger. Also, better swing water is moving water, so try not to get hung up on pools.

Full sink shooting heads get much deeper than sinktip systems in faster currents.

It’s all muscle memory like a bike you don’t forget but a good warmup an you spook less fish in the run I’ve never met a spay-rod I didn’t like but had to learn how to use each one like a set of clubs the right rod for the correct line depth but tying flies that’s a labor of ❤steelhead won’t give you a second chance don’t go hunting Bigfoot with a bow an arrow ,release the wild it’s all we have to reassure a bean pool
