It's not always windy around Tekapo, however the mountains can cause gusty winds bearing in mind that the prevailing winds in New Zealand are from the west. This causes the temperatures on the easterly side of the ranges to be at least 10º centigrade warmer than on the west owing to the foehn wind effect. This is worst during spring and autumn (fall) when the winds tend to be stronger. I once had the job of flying a plane photographing the power transmission lines from around 20,000 feet from Mt Mary to Manapouri, where the DC current power for the North Island over the Cook Straight cable comes from. The power station is underground at the end of Lake Manapouri and you can take an interesting bus tour down the spiral road inside the mountain to the power station, which I have done. The water from the hydro station ends up in the sea in Doubtful Sound via a long tail race tunnel.

Wow that's crazy! Your job has let you see a lot of unique things around NZ! Yeah this was around the end of January and it felt REALLY windy that day! 🤣

Hey guy's, sorry about the wind. Unfortunately you are in an area that is notorious for wind. In fact there is a place not far from where you were in this video called Omarama that has a glider club and that is where world records have been set for the longest glider flights because of the wind :-)

The Tekapo hot pools are great to waste a couple of hours. Sitting in a hot pool looking at the endless views never gets old 😊

Valley's in NZ are notorious for wind gusts but I think you might have caught it on an extra bad day.

Some of those swing bridges were actually pretty scary to cross. Our plan was to sit and eat lunch at the end of the trail by the water but it was way too windy for that haha!
