Daniel Wu's impeccable car collection really does it for us, in large part because they're builds - not just cars bought off a lot. And they're tasteful to boot. And while his Tanto 510 is a gem, THIS is peak Honda awesomeness. A period correct restoration is one thing, but period correct restomodding is where striking a balance can get tough. And if you watch our SEMA special, you'll know this was Roncar's #1 pick. For good reason.

In 1968 my father spent a few months on Guam working for Lockheed on the fleet ballistic missile submarines. His rental car was a Honda S800 and he loved it. Flash forward to 1974 and I reported to VQ-1 (Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron ONE) as a Navy Airborne Electronic Warfare Officer. One of the first things I did was start searching for a Honda S800 since, after all, I had learned to drive and had taken my driving test in a 1960 Austin-Healey Bugeye Sprite. I found an S800 hatchback in a dirty, rusty color with an engine that had been modified for autocross so it was pumping out 135 HP at 12,000 RPM. Rev it to 8000 RPM and dump the clutch and you left 75-100 feet of black rubber stripes. Drove it, started working on the body and the interior and noticed that the clutch was starting to show wear. Took it to the local (and only) Honda dealership for a new clutch. When I got it back two weeks later it would barely move and the dealership would not talk to me or look at my S800. Took it to a local mechanic who diagnosed that the engine had been severely over-revved and it had swallowed a piston ring. I contacted the Honda dealership and told them they had to fix it because they readily admitted that their Chief Mechanic had gone to test drive, had missed a shift and revved it to an estimated 14,000 RPM. They told me to F-off. They refused to fix it and refused to order the parts for me from Honda. When I threatened to call the Better Business Bureau they wished me a happy trip to Hawaii and the nearest BBB. I deployed regularly to Japan and found out that Honda had a policy in Japan at the time that they would only provide parts to dealerships and the Japanese dealerships would not then sell the parts to me. My S800 became a permanent paperweight and I had no choice but to scrap it. I still have a few pictures and some great memories. Now I drive a 2006 Mitsubishi Evolution IX that has beaten a Ferrari California in a 0-60 head-to-head. Not bad for age 71.

Chad Pease - Agreed! It does look badass.. I know a **TRUE STORY** that is a hell of a lot more badass than the car though: Mike Durant was taken prisoner by Somali militia men after his UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter was struck with a rocket-propelled grenade and crashed on Oct. 3, 1993. He was taken captive by Somalis for 11 days, they even tried to kill him **THREE TIMES** this was obviously not enough. The day Mike Durant was saved, The song “Hells Bells” by AC/DC was playing over where Mike Durant had been taken to. Little did the Somalis know, the US Military was searching for him, and they weren’t going down without a fight. On October 14th, 1993, nearly 11 days after Mike Durant was taken captive, he was saved, and in one hell of a way too.. As bullets reigned fire over the area, they saved Mike.. That goes to prove how badass America is lmfao. How’s that for badass? lol

I'll preface my overly lengthy comments with a couple of things: I have never seen your channel before But at a quick glance it appears that most of the builds you feature seem to be far better executed than those I am personally aware of. I'm also not much of a movie guy and so I must admit to the fact that I do not know who Daniel Wu is. One thing that I apparently do have in common with Daniel is that I too am a Honda fan. In my case, for most of my life (literally). My first Honda, of the sort that that zips around on two wheels, came at around 9 years of age and now almost 50 years later I still own two, a motorcycle and a car - a CB1100 and a S2000. My approach, for the most part, has been to leave my Honda's (cars and motorcycles alike) almost completely stock. I imagine that there isn't a whole lot of crossover between our respective worlds other than the fact that if nothing else car guys always have a passion for cars in common. Yet when the thumbnail for this S800 video popped up in my KZbin feed I couldn't help but click 'n watch. Given my background, it shouldn't come as a surprise that when I see an incredibly rare and beautiful car like a S800 has been fairly extensively modified, my gut reaction is "God, no!". The reality is that the vast majority of "builds" that I've been exposed to are cars that have been butchered without any clear vision minus the funds, time, and effort spent to make them worthy of the cars that were consumed in the process. But through the course of watching this video it quickly became apparent that this particular build was an entirely different beast (and what an awesome little beast it is). When I learned that this build resulted from salvaging what would likely been two cars that eventually would have found their way to the crusher, I couldn't help but love it. Daniel's vision that exists at the very core of this build is incredible. That he was able to do justice to his vision by ensuring that the proper level of commitment was carried out (both in terms of the quality of the materials used and the quality of the work that was done) over every square inch of this car is truly what makes this build so wonderful. I honestly can't find any fault with this car. Every single choice Daniel made works in perfect harmony, both visually and functionally with every other choice. That is such a rare thing to see executed in this day and age of instant gratification. Not that Daniel would concern himself with what a random guy like me thinks, but in all honestly, the greatest compliment I can pay to this car, and to Daniel, is that even I - "Mr. Keep That Rare Honda Stock", can't help but be totally mesmerized by this amazing S800. It is truly a work of art that honors the craft of doing things the right way. I personally would not say that this car is "better" so much than it is "different" than say a well preserved or expertly restored original S800 (I've spent some time admiring an unbelievably clean original S600 Coupe up close and feel they are incredibly cool cars just as they left the factory). But in this case, "different" is a jaw-droppingly beautiful thing. I can honestly say I hope when the time comes that this car finds it's way into the hands of a new owner (hopefully far, far down the road), that they do not change a single thing. I thank Daniel Wu for sharing his car with the reset of us and I thank Hoonigan Auto Focus for making it happen. You might not be able to teach an old dog new tricks as the saying goes, but when the circumstances are right you can open his eyes up to the beauty of this world in places where he would never expect to find it. With much respect, Peace

Great, honest post. In general I appreciate (and search for myself), the most original examples of whatever catches my fancy at the time, but I would love to have this car. I actually have an earlier S600- all original. What is a big turn-off, and not just in the car world BTW, are people who are so rigid in their opinion of what's right and wrong there is no flexibility whatsoever- it's almost a disease really. Sometimes it really is just a car.

Daniel Wu is one of the biggest action stars in current Chinese cinema (Top 5 I'd say). He might not be as well known outside Asian markets as Donnie Yen (of Ip Man fame), but he is pretty well known in Asia, having starred in 50+ films, mostly action films and the occasional chick flick (chicks DIG his looks). Think of him as Chinese Tom Cruise. I never knew he was such a huge car guy. Saw his other builds and his collection only made me respect him even more. A lot of action stars drives fast cars outside of movies just for the looks and attention. Daniel Wu actually being a real car guy gets some mad respect from me.

My dream car would be a 1990 civic ef sedan worth a k24 roots sport charger and make it all wheel drive sequential trans make it look old school meets hot rod cut a hole in the hood so the super charger fits kinda like the ones with a itb setup they cut a hole in the hood in most cases when they use k series motor

@@LadyWanderlust, just saw this reply. My dream car would be nothing like this. My dreams are made up Hypercars like a McLaren P1 or resto build from the Ring Brothers of a 1970 Boss 302 for Robert Downey Jr.

My dad owned both an S600 Coupe and an S800 convertible, he cried when he was forced to sell them, he knew they would be worth something one day and was devastated that he was not able to restore them himself. Both cars were all original, had all their trim but needed bodywork, paint and interiors redone. He had already taken care of all the mechanical work and both cars ran like new. I have sent him the link to this, he will be smiling for days. Thanks guys, great vid.

This is the most perfect example of what makes America great. This car is a blend of cultures, styles, and ideas which create a beautiful piece of dynamic art. I was thinking, "British Gangsta Style" and then the dude said it!! Love it, love it, love it! That engine is simply the greatest thing I have ever seen. Soichiro was a genius! The bulge on the hood is to accommodate the air box? That is engineers trumping marketing and bean counters, all day long.
