Is it Worth It - IMS Filter Basket and Shower Screen | Breville Barista Express

Just got my ims shower screen for my barista express from amazon and definitely returning it. The water comes out uneven compare to stock screen when i installed it.

I have been using the IMS shower screen and 18-22g filter basket (the bigger one) for a week. What I have noticed so far is that the shower screen does indeed distribute water more evenly throughout the puck when compared to the factory shower screen. As for the 18-22g filter basket, the basket itself is bigger in circumference than the original single wall double filter basket. I noticed there is a small gap when tamping on the IMS filter basket using either the original barista express tamper, or my 53mm tamper. this gap seems to be affecting my pull as I get way less pressure (from the pressure dial) than the original basket.

The problem is not the gap, it's because precision baskets have "bigger" holes. You need to tune your grinder again when changing baskets.

@@rsfelipe thank you gentlemen just got an open bottom portafilter with the ims screen and shower and immediately had the same low pressure issue. Time to adjust the grind. Any tips appreciated before I start

Just got my IMS basket (B62.52TH24E) and adjusted my grinder (Kingrinder K6) from 35 clicks (original basket - 18 in 36 out in 24s 1st drip - taste bit sour) to 33 clicks and result with IMS 18in 36out in 24s 1st drip. Taste was chocolaty on 1st sip but when swirled came out to be a bit less sour. Weighed previous puck was at 27g but IMS puch weighed 32g. This means that IMS basket produces faster? output. Time should have increased but same surprisingly.

the flush looked different with the IMS screen! the flow was very equal all across, whereas the original Breville looked like some parts had heavier flow than others.

I just got my IMS screen delivered and I have the Barista Pro - I wasn’t able to install the screen. The screw for the Breville screen doesn’t fit the IMS screen 😔

Quick update - I got it to fit! I used a very small round metal file to widen the opening for the screw. The amount of material removed was minimal, less than one minute of using the file got the job done. This screen definitely makes a difference!! This morning’s espresso and cappuccino were the best yet...

With your Barista Express, didn't you change the pump to one that was more powerful (or rated for longer usage?)? I remember you replaced the pump and I think you said it was an upgrade?

I have been using the IMS Shower screen for about 2 months, and I noticed a channel depression in my puck, in the same position, every time. I tried different dosing, different tamping pressure, different beans and different grind sizes. Same output, the depression is always in the same place. I switched back to the stock shower screen, the depression is no more. BTW, I also use the IMS filter. Any suggestions/reasons as to why this happens?

Hoon, If you are single dosing you should set the Grind Control to Max (I believe it would be around 7 o'clock) not 5 o'clock. That way you won't have to grind again.

You won't notice any differences in espresso taste if you install new shower screen. It's youtubers hype :)

I ordered an IMS basket from the amazon link however it came without that blueish hue I'm guessing the non stick treatment? Anyone else experience this? I think they sent me the wrong item

@@bethamoth I ordered from Amazon described as IMS Baristapro Nanotech Precision Ridgeless Double. I did notice later there is a blue hue on the outside of the basket not the inside. At least on mine. I personally didn’t find it to be anymore non stick than the original basket on my rocket. Seems like it’s working great for hoon though

See my reply to Steve Rummel’s comment - I used a metal file and was able to make the screen fit the BE878’s factory screw with minimal work. Hope you can do the same!!

My guess is that the shower screen would be worth it. Maybe only the filter screen. NOTE: She's a little hard to hear because she's so far off the mic. Your lavalier sounds good. Since I make 2 different Espressos for us each day, I'll have to buy 2 filter screen and the shower screen. So if the Shower screen makes a real difference maybe I could keep the Breville filter basket, it's a little more affordable. Otherwise, mo money mo money mo money. YIKES
