The game definitely felt a bit more competitive but Jordan famously helped orchestrate the lock out shortened season after his first come back, to make it possible to capitalise on the amount a player could be paid in a season. And Hakeem held out, he’s a bad example, it’s well documented how he wasn’t getting paid his value so tried to force a trade. Pippen is the same era and obviously his tantrums are well known. Latrell Sprewell, while a few years later did the same until he was out of the league.

A performance based contract system is seriously the best idea ever in response to the fckery going on in the NBA right now. Some NBA players have completely forgotten what it takes to make the NBA entertaining for fans. The fanbase should be what matters most to them! Tickets sold in the arena means money in their pockets, and the only way to garner fans is by playing hard, putting forth the effort and putting on a show even if sometimes you don’t want to.

The NBA doesn't have to do a thing. The owners got the league into this mess. They want their shiny toy to be the shiniest, and they're operating on an order of magnitude above even the players. One owner could bust it up, though. A player comes to him with an outrageous demand. He says no. Then he calls a press conference and explains why he said no. Say it was Paul George. He just says, "I'm not going to pay a 34 year old 70 million a year in guaranteed money when I know the guy is no longer in his prime. He's missed half of our games in the last five years. I'm not paying top dollar for someone I can't count on for 82 games. I know you all want to watch winning basketball, but paying this guy isn't how it happens. I'm not going to hamstring our team's salary cap like this." People would understand that. Oh, you don't think regular people would have a soft spot for a billionaire who talked to them and addressed their concerns? Take a look at who's in the White House. An owner who said, "We might lose, but I'm not paying a pampered, oft-injured prima donna obscene amounts of money in exchange for drama," would get years of goodwill from the fanbase. If he made moves and drafted to improve, maybe longer. The dam would crack at that point. When the other billionaires saw him making money anyway, they'd copy him, no question. The owners started this. The owners are going to have to fix it.

I understand the issues presented in this video and I agree with large swaths of it. I'm a Sixers fan and have seen variations of this kind of behavior multiple times as you use several examples from them in this video. PG's attitude sucks right now, and I do think there are issues that need to be resolved. However, if you're going to propose something like non-guaranteed contracts you need to acknowledge what you're saying: that the billionaire class that runs both the league and the everything else should be able to rip away money from the people that actually make the system work. The non-guaranteed contracts in the NFL in particular are a travesty, especially given what we now know about how much they are literally selling their bodies and brains for our entertainment. The NBA isn't as difficult on people's brains, so there is somewhat of an apples-oranges comparison there. But having 82 games a season plus playoffs at the level they are now playing is unbelievably demanding on people's bodies. Are there fake injuries that come from that? Yes. Are there consequences on the product the league puts out because of that? Yes. Having non-guaranteed money may take a bite into that, but it will also massively increase the exploitation on the players as well as fueling the argument that the vampire ruling class in this country is constantly putting out there. They run the show, and we should all be happy with the scraps that we get. It's really easy to sit around as a fan and point to the massive money that people make doing this and view them as the problem. The truth is, though, you are siding with ownership and the billionaire class over labor by making this argument. Especially now, that's the exact opposite of what we need to be doing. People should be making what they're worth. That goes for everyone from professional athletes to public school teachers. Arguing that professional athletes shouldn't get more from the product they create isn't helping the league and it's not helping anyone else either. Be careful of who you're aligning yourself with.

First off, this idea is a pipe dream. The NBPA would absolutely go on strike to stop this from happening. Agents would join them. MLB has guaranteed contracts and does not seem to share the same issue. The NFL has proven that non-guaranteed contracts are severely detrimental to athletes. Finally, I'd argue that this all started w/ Kawhi, and it will end with this generation of players.

The same thing is happening in the NFL, ultimately these athletes make way too much money playing a damn game, they develop crazy egos and think they just deserve all the money. Sports in general need to have a serious conversation about the contracts they give out. No athlete needs to ink a 200+ million dollar contract just playing sports. It's ruining the sports, these guys get paid and decide to stop playing the sports. Look at guys like Zion, Ben Simmons. Other athletes see this and are like fuck it im doing that. Too many divas thinking they worth more than they are. When Paul George asked for that bag no one should have signed him, show him he's not valued like he thinks.

I think your depiction of Kawhi here is misplaced and/or uninformed. He’s seen as the pioneer of load management, but that’s because he has legitimate, serious repeated injuries. Patrick Beverley says he’s the hardest working person he’s ever played with, and he does it at both ends of the floor at an elite level. Comparing him to PG or Zion or even Butler demanding a trade is really unfair.

New rules to reduce star complacency: 1) If you score less than 5 pts per game or get suspended by your team, you can't record your podcast for 1 week. 2) Certain teams that throw money at oft-injured "star" players like PG lose a 2nd round draft pick if their franchise players sits more than 10 straight games in the first year of their contract 3) If your GM makes the worst trades of all time, the GM loses 10% of their base pay or gets sent to GM for the Shanghai Sharks 4) Any superstar younger than 30 that signs as multi-year deal after 2025 must play 5 games in Japan's league every time they "recover" from mental health issues. They can choose which games in Japan's season they have to play. 5) Every time Doc Rivers loses a playoff series, the team gets penalized a draft pick or the superstar that underperforms loses 1 million. Alternatively, if he blows a 3-1 lead, that team's fan club gets to shock-stick him as many times as they want for 1 hour. 6) any time a player fails to meet the contract weight goals, the NBA can require that player to only eat the blandest meals from the HelloFresh menu until that player cries on his twitter feed.

The NBA is a reflection of society. We already have players comparing being traded to slavery. If the NBA grew a spine and actually implemented these rules, players would revolt and the main stream sports media would regurgitate their argument that it’s a bunch of rich white billionaires complaining about paying their players. I think the only way realistically to fix the NBA is for teams to draft only European players who have more fundamentals, play more team ball as opposed to one on one, and don’t take things for granted. The NBA chose to make stars bigger than the teams, and we have high schoolers who have been fed into their minds they are the next “chosen one” so they come into the league already thinking they are bigger than the sport. That, and also perhaps (shocker here) enforcing traveling violations. Players are palming the ball, carrying, and taking 3-4 steps calling it a crab dribble.

This idea is stupid. It would make NBA less competitive probably would even kill it. Let me tell you what would happen if players get paid 20% guaranteed and 80% for performance. All the best players would join together and form 5 or 6 "superteams" in big markets which would win 80%-90% of games every season. Every player basically would want to join one of these teams as free agent and would even take less "guaranteed" money on contract so they could make much more money from "winning". Meanwhile no one would want to join worst performing teams with constant losing records even if they offer double on performance based contract. Best teams could constantly hire best players in every position while worst teams couln't hire above average player at all and all the rookies would want to leave them as fast as possible for better teams.

I mean this is demonstrably untrue. If you look at revenue earned per team, each team has made less money every year since 2019. If anything, the players aren’t even paying the players. There needs to be some sort of checks-and-balances, and a performance-based contract would make sense; it would encourage players to play full seasons, at their absolute best, which would drive attendance up and encourage revenue in the league again.

It's a symbiotic relationship. I'm not going to get into the fairness of profits and wages in this post, but the NBA needs the players to entertain and the players need the NBA for everything else. There's A LOT of moving parts behind the scenes that make this all happen that the players do not contribute towards whatsoever. Sure, theoretically they can all leave the NBA and join or start some other organization, but they still need an organization that deals with everything but the actual playing itself.

Here's my problem with this analysis, if the NBA does not pay the players, then where do the billions in revenue go? You point out that the star NBA players earn 800 times the average American. But do this same analysis on the Billionaire club that own the teams, and you find people who make NBA salaries look small. We are already in a situation in America where the top 1% continue to consolidate wealth into a higher and higher percentage of the economy as a whole. I'd be all for this if somehow that money went back to the fans, but the TV deals are already there. At least the NBA stars had to outwork thousands of players to be the best at what they do. So instead, you would have the money go to the billionaire owners who often got their money through inheritance rather than work.
