On Saturday October 24, 2015, I was given the rare opportunity to ride through the Hoosac Tunnel via Amtrak's Autumn Express. Traveling between North Adams and Florida, MA, this 4.75 mile long journey took just over 19 minutes.
Amtrak was very kind to me and allowed me to ride on the back deck of the VIP car to shoot while going through the tunnel! This gives us what is probably the best Hoosac Tunnel footage to date.
Please enjoy the footage and the banter I had with the 2 relief engineers!
Key elements:
00:33 - Enter the West Portal
02:22 - End of brick works (There are other segments of brick through the tunnel. This is where the main tube ends.)
04:47 - West Signal Light
10:42 - Central Shaft Bore (1 of 2 Large dark "void" on right. There are two of these, one on either side, which bore in and twist up to the central shaft)
10:42 - Beginning of Central Shaft Brick Arch
10:46 - Hoosac Hotel (On right - Marked by old catenary pole sticking out from wall)
10:48 - Central Shaft Bore (2 of 2 - Large dark "void" on left.)
11:09 - Midway Point of Tunnel - Note Two Reflective Discs on Right
16:58 - East Signal Light
19:49 - Exit the East Portal
If you spot other things which should be noted, please comment below!
This excursion was being pulled by Amtrak Phase III heritage units 822 (since shopped and most likely to be scrapped) and 145, both P42DC's.
Thanks for watching!

That was so much fun to watch! After growing up in NA and being raised in the shadow of this wonderous feat, being able to view this clear imagery is just a huge treat! I was lucky enough to have gone through the tunnel as a child with my family on a train ride that was a rare event....(1980's?) I can't honestly even remember half of it I was so young....however...I do remember the train stopping in the middle and turning off all lights for a few seconds.....that somehow lingers in a child's memory....lol....that ride made me a pretty big train lover myself......so I very much appreciate your footage......congratulations on your capture!

8:20 - could be the light playing off rocks on the tunnel - buuuut - it kinda looks like something dark on the left of screen darts straight into the ground, from about a 3rd of the way up the wall. After watching the rest of the footage. I saw lots more rock formations jutting out that failed to reproduce the effect, so it's a little mysterious.

I wonder that myself. Seems that either train width dimensions have changed or minimum clearance standards have increased? It's funny how danger obsessed so many Americans today are, when you consider the routine risks those who manned projects like this took for granted as the cost of putting food on the table. That's true throughout most of history, and here we are today terrified of and spending billions to combat terrorism, which has only killed just 32 Americans in the 15 years since 9/11.

@@Imrfilms Mostly Irish Immigrants built the tunnel. In the early 1800s Immigrants who died on the job were buried on the worksite. Thats how we treated the Men who built this Country. As a Taxi driver in NY I worked with B and M crews who went through it. and knew a lot about it. Rail crews know there are ghosts. Its Real.

What time in the video does the train pass under the central shaft ? (edit - I've found the answer. at about 10:45)
@Imrfilms
@Imrfilms 2 жыл бұрын
It's the 10:42-10:48 time frame. There is a brick arch lining the tunnel here, so we don't actually see the shaft itself. But if you look on the right at 10:42 and left at 10:48, you can see some voids in the sides which are the access tubes to the shaft.

I thought I seen a couple spots on this video where it looked like spirits looking around corners and one spot looked like a spirit kicked back chilling against the wall on the left side. Idk though because of the quality and the infrared light changing the cameras focus. Definitely cool though. It would be super cool to see a entire walkthrough at night!

i walked into this tunnel with my friend and we went around a corner.. it got pitch black and i really tried to not freak out, but.. i wound up walking very fast back out haha. my friend was laughing at me. it was spooky spooky

@@animalanimal1417 It's odd how you were able to walk around a corner in this tunnel when it is perfectly straight. There is an incline towards the center (it slopes down towards both ends so that it can drain the water) but there are no corners.
