Your "bog" is a man-made pond, a legacy of the pre-wilderness era of the area before 1982. The Forest Service created dozens of these ponds to provide water to firefighting crews, which were reachable via gravel paved fire roads like the one leading north from the fire tower. Most of these ponds had substantial cleared areas - regularly mowed with power equipment - to accommodate fire apparatus. Maintenance of the ponds, clearings, and fire roads stopped in 1982, when the area came under the Wilderness Act of 1964. The road from the tower to Terrill Cemetery is the only remaining road that is maintained, to provide access to the cemetery. Source: I've been camping in this area since 1970.

Just a little tip: If you do winter hiking and use gas, look for a cooker that allows to place the cartridge upside-down, so you can get it going even if the gas is all liquid. I use the kovea spider, nice and small, connects to those cartridges you use via a flexible pipe, so the cartridge is placeable the way you want.

I love how you guys take the time to capture and describe all the things I find so appealing about being out in the winter time. The beech leaves hanging on for dear life in the winter wind. The ice droplets that cling to the trunk of a tree after the water that surrounded it has receded. Or just the plain old peace and quiet that one usually encounters in the woods in the winter. Not everyone appreciates how freezing your ass off in a shelter or tent can make you feel "warm and fuzzy" on the inside. Thanks so much Bryan, Andrew and Robby !! And thank you too, Thomas Sinard for your role in making this all happen.

Guys, I've been watching your video(s) for a while now. I've enjoy the places you have visited and sharing your experiences. Kudos to you all for making the videos. I just finished watching this winter camping one and know the feeling of a cold winter camping. Many times in my younger years, friends and I would camp until the snow fell, many of cold nights. I discovered a trick that may help you - or even your subscribers who see this - in your future endeavors if you're going out in winter and sleeping in the tent. If you have a medium (or larger) sized cooking pan / pot, or medium sized or larger lid, you can put some medium sized rocks near your campfire towards the end of the evening letting them get hot. As you climb inside for the night, put the hot rock in the pan or on the lid inside the tent in a corner (as not to start a fire or melt the netting) on top of a towel or similar as to not burn the bottom of the tent floor, and let the rock release the heat inside the tent. If the tent is fairly air tight, the rock will make the air temp inside quite warmer for quite some time. And if your fire burns all night and/or you get cold in the middle of the night, you can switch out rocks to warm the interior of the tent up again to help you sleep better until morning. This has always helped me and those I have camped with. Just a suggestion, hope it helps.. Mike.

Really nice to see my local haunt on your channel. I generally spent a couple weeks worth of days there over the year. The picture on the left of this comment was taken at the trailhead parking lot on a cold, snowy winters day much like the one you enjoyed. The unfortunate thing is that the best parts of this wilderness are off trail. You were a few hundred feet from an old fire road when you sat to enjoy your tea. That road takes you back to the older campsites that are no longer on the maps. Beautiful hill tops, cedar groves, cliffs and ravines covered in hard woods. The back country of Terrill Ridge is just an amazing place to explore, all the way to the reservoir and Salt Creek. Next time you wish to head there, message me and I will send you coordinates to some pretty cool areas in the back country.

So much to love here. Some really beautiful photography (that little ice/leaf sequence! The unexpected crashes of green moss! Some seriously great wide shots!), our midwestern winter suffering manifest (I’m so sorry Bryan, I know exactly how you felt!) and transformed to shared unspoken commune, and, to get down to details, I think that’s a new ending font, and I like it and somehow (?) it seems to fit really well with the ep and the music (oh and the stellar music, perfectly spare to match the season). I hate cold, so I worry about winter eps, but this might be one of my favorites.

I was so tired and about to go to bed but the title said Winter Camping. You know how much I've been waiting for this. But the next video after this will be even better. Hehehehehehehe. I don't know if it's this video or what, but you can really tell how well your lights shine in the dark. Love that. So I see Andrew taking tinder from his chest pocket. Looks like he gathered that on the trail while hiking which is cool. Quick Tip Andrew; when winter camping it's better to break the small twigs off pine tree's which are lower to the ground. It helps the tree in the summer time and it's all dead and dry so it's perfect for fire starting twigs. Another little pro tip about camping in the winter. Go pee before you go to bed. Bryan was worried about being cold I noticed. A full bladder will make you colder at night when winter camping. I do think you guys are over dressing when you sleep. If your sleeping pad and sleeping bag is good, you should only need that and your underwear. I could be wrong, but kinda looked like Andrew used his stuff sack filled with clothes as a pillow. With it being a winter camp I was worried we wouldn't get Andrew's nature talk where we learn about tree's and plants, I'm glad I was wrong. Regarding your second night talk about winter camping. Winter camping is widely comfort camping. Bring things that make the time comfy so if it's a heavier sleeping bag or maybe down quilts to go over top (that works wonders by the way) then bring it. As long as you're comfy. Little tip and I'm sure Andrew's heard of this but if you have one of those single wall metal water bottles, fill it with boiling water, and put it at the foot of your sleeping bag before you go to bed, it'll warm the bag up. Andrew looks weird without his glasses but not a bad weird. He's shivering bad though in the morning there. I gotta send Andrew my spare gloves. They look exactly like his but is made out of a different material. His pair looked like they hardly worked. The water bottle trick mentioned before would warm your hands in the morning too with new boiled water. Regarding a "Creamy Soup" as mentioned by Robby, I suggest Leak and Potato soup. My sister makes me a large thermos full which keeps warm a good 3 days. It will fill you up and get you warm instantly. I loved the video guys, I hope we can get you a hot tent so that next winter, you can do some hot tenting at a base camp where you can then hike with a lighter load during the day then return to camp during the night. Now though, I must sleep. Cheers!
@AdventureArchives6 жыл бұрын
Actually in the next winter episode, I decided to sleep in my bag with less clothes. Not sure if it made a difference since i think the nights were a tad warmer than at Hoosier, but the logic makes sense to me in that less clothes on you helps your body heat warm up the ambient air temperature in your bag. ~Bry

Being from NE OH I share the same passion being outside in the winter. The vast, raw openness of the winter forest is really unmatched. Its pure solitude. It’s a feeling you will never replicate in the summer because you literally have to love nature to want to hike in winter. So everything is appreciated that much more. It’s very special and I also look forward to it every winter. I’ve got such a deep love and connection for nature without it not much else exists in my world. What a great video you guys are very relaxing to watch as per usual . You literally feel like you’re there hiking along. I found an old cemetery in the CVNP and some of the graves are older than the state of OH and the names on the headstones were just as unique as the ones you found!!! so anyway the post hike meal best way to end to the videos. ahhhh good times.... Bryan, look up "Garlington taco." Bring a poncho and you can improvise in case of colder than expected weather and never worry about being cold in the hammock. Also, check your underquilt to be sure it's just tight enough to eliminate air gaps. For those feet, a hot water bottle or hand warmer will do wonders.
@AdventureArchives6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'll check that out! I'm pretty sure my Underquilt was set up pretty well, but it just wasn't rated low enough for the temperature we had. As of now I'm probably gonna stick to tents for cold weather, but I will be looking at the possibility of a thicker underquilt for another winter episode in the future.
