I love it that Jimmy is such a quiet and soft spoken person, and he barely says much at all in the whole movie, and when he does, it’s always very low key and timid sounding. But in the most important moment in the most important game of his life, he speaks up and is very confident, strong, and direct. Such a badass moment, man.

Jerry Goldsmith is a freaking genius. John Williams takes a lot of credit and is amazing, but Goldsmith is, to me, just as great. That music makes the moment. For anyone that has been in high school sports, this movie is a treasure.

I always appreciated the Southbend coach and his demeanor. I always felt like he knew his team was good but they were playing a good Hickory team in a well played basketball game. His post game consoling of his players was compassionate and his handshake with Coach Dale was out of absolute respect for a job well done.

Funny thing is the guy playing the South Bend coach is Ray Crowe, the head coach of the 1955 and 1956 Crispus Attucks High School Tigers who were the first black high school to win state championships back to black. One of the players on his team was future NBA Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson.

Not just Indiana. I don't know what things are like today. As I was finishing High School there was tons of school consolidation and centralization that led to small schools being closed. But as I was growing up in Arkansas there were tons of small gyms just like the ones in 'Hoosiers' that could be compared to barns on the campuses of small high schools with just 64 boys in the whole school and I have spent many a Friday night with half the rest of the town crowded into one of those small brightly colored gyms.

Best sports movie ever made- and the Goldsmith's fantastic score never seems to give me goosebumps. This scene is so incredible: it shows that not only have the players grown, but the coach has grown as well; no longer as headstrong, authoritarian, and stubborn, but willing to compromise and listen to his players' input.

In his book "The Jordan Rules", Sam Smith sets up Jordan's classic moment of "The Shot" when he eliminated the Cavs in the 1989 playoffs by describing the team huddle before the play. According to Smith, coach Doug Collins had drawn up a play where Jordan was going to be a decoy, but Jordan interjected angrily "Give me the f----n' ball!" and the rest is legacy. Just wondering if MJ had seen this scene from Hoosiers?

A very entertaining movie, but one of the biggest myths is that Hickory (Milan Indians) were underdogs. In the previous season, Milan had finished 4th. in the State Tournament and returned all 5 starters from that team, which would have made them one of the pre season favorites to win it all.
@Hal09i
@Hal09i 8 ай бұрын
This is what "team" means. Jimmy is the best player, but he checks his ego at the door. Likewise so do the other players. They all contributed, all came through the entire season-- even Ollie. But this is the shot that it comes down to. No glory hounds here...just an honest evaluation of who has the best chance of sinking the final shot and winning the game and championship.

I watched the real game, it's on the internet. No shot clock,Hickory was playing zone defence, and traveling strictly enforced. Final score was 32-30. The Hickory team came out to a fast start. They where beating the Big school off the dribble and off the boards and everything else. They had a 10 point lead after the first quarter. Then things settled down and the second quarter was played even with Hickory holding the lead into half. Then in the Third quarter, the Big School came back and took a small lead going into the 4th. With Hickory down by 2, with no shot clock, Hickory held the ball in the middle of the floor for almost 5mins before calling a timeout. With the remaining time the Big School choaked and turned the ball over 3 times. And Hickory hit a basket to tie, and the final shot to win. That's what happened.

I always thought there was a hidden meaning behind this scene. The Picket Fence obviously was a gimmick that only worked in desperation. Basically it was admitting even if it worked the other team was superior. It has been successful but only because it wasn't expected and was called in desperation. By the town drunk. The players understood it but the coach was unaware of that given he was ejected. They didn't want to win on blind luck. The kid said he wanted to win fir his dad. But the other said kind of pissed off about it, in my opinion, 'Lers win fir coach!' he's who got us here. The coach designed it. Drew it up in the fly and it went as diagramed. Better than Picket Fence. Which obviously is referesce of the hick town they were from. Probably wouldn't have worked twice. Merle already used it. That well run dry. Particularly if S. Bend, Central had any film. F.W.I.W.

This is a great movie based on a true story. Spike Lee is an idiot... the film is out there. Sure the names and towns are different but the outcome is the same. The biggest difference is the coach wasn't an outsider and that Milan team was great the year before. The real crazy thing is watching high school basketball before the shot clock so they held the ball forever. And the girls played 6 vs 6. They would divide up the floor at the midcourt stripe and play 3 on 3 at each end, so you were either a forward or defender. That's where the terms "frontcourt" and "backcourt" came from. My mom was on a team that made it to the finals when she was a junior in high school in Texas. She was a guard so she was a backcourt player. We lived in Iowa for a while when I was around 10 and the girls still played that way... it was so weird to watch. This was around 1980.

What was the deal with that last shot. Why didn’t the coach just tell Jimmy to take the shot in the first place? What was that drama all about?

Norman Dale is Similar that Carlos Bilando the former argentina national coach. Win is the only one thing. The second is the best of the losers.

I know it's a movie, but question -- Why didn't South Bend Central call any timeouts throughout the game? And why didn't they call timeout after seeing what Hickory was going to do? They probably didn't want to foul Jimmy, but they could have put some full court pressure on him.

They might have been out of timeouts. The movie doesn't show the entire game.

When would they have known what Hickory was going to do? They didn't pass the ball in to Jimmy. Once the ball was in play, SB couldn't call time out.

Questionable coaching by SB. How do you not double the best player in the state when he is isolated at the top of the key where he is deadly? 😉 Just having a little fun.
