So was the movie Hoosiers even accurate? Did the final basketball game happen like they portrayed it?

So, I am from Muncie, and I can tell you something interesting about this game. My great grandpa was the Athletic director at Muncie Central, and during the final four that year, he actually had the school MAKE THE CHAMPIONSHIP BANNER, before even making the championship. So, for a long time, we had that banner in my Grandpa’s house, and it wasn’t until 10 years ago or so that the Indiana Basketball HOF contacted us to buy it from us. It’s currently in the IBHOF in New Castle, IN. I graduated from Muncie Central in 2013, and we are still tied for most state championships in basketball with 8 currently.

FivePoints Vids definitely! Another funny fact is that it’s kind of an unwritten rule to never speak about Hoosiers in Muncie, unless you aren’t from Muncie. It was pretty devastating, and kinda crazy that people still freak out about it. It’s almost like the ultimate “warriors blew a 3-1 lead.”

Interesting tidbit from the movie is, Ray Kraft, the leading scorer on that Milan team, is the official who lets Coach Dale and the team into Hinkle Fieldhouse. He was the IHSAA commissioner for many years as well. Last time I was in Indy, went to Bobby Plump's bar, called The Last Shot, and had a good time. It's on the southeast side of the city...

In the late 1970s, I worked at a clothing store in the Castleton Mall in Indy. I waited on a very nice gentleman who handed me his credit card, which read "Robert Plump." I asked, "Are you THE Bobby Plump?" to which he replied, "How do you know who I am?" I said, "Sir, anyone who ever played or watched high school basketball in this state knows who you are."

My school in Indiana was Argos High School. My class had 49 people in it, and Argos holds the record in Indiana for most victories in a row with 76 regular season wins in a row. We never won the state. Only ever making it to the final 4 a couple of times. When they changed the rules in 1997 it was really hard, because we always lived with the dream that we would too would one day do what Milan did. After that everything was cheap.

I found out shortly after the movie came out, that the basketball coach at my high school was on that Milam team - Ronnie Truitt. He took Cy-Fair (near Houston) to the Texas class 3A final 4 in 1970 and to Class 4A state championship in 1971. He was a great guy and later became a principle and has a middle school named after him in the Cy-Fair district. Unfortunately, he died too young in 1988

I covered the basketball games of Shawe Memorial High School in Madison, IN during the 1980s and '90s. Once, after they'd just played Milan, I interviewed the Milan coach about the game, and before leaving the visitors' locker room, I said, "Say, coach, I forgot to ask you your name!" He answered, "Gene White." I said, "Are you the Gene White who played on the 1954 Milan state champs?" He said, "Yep!"

It really wasn't that big of underdog story when you consider Milan had at least 3 players (other than Bobby Plump who was the best) that would go on to play college basketball. You only need 5 players on a court at one time, so if you got 3 great ones it doesn't matter how small your school is. The incredible thing is a town of the size of Milan could produce 3 college players on 1 team.
@Seryma86

I can agree to your point, but the truth is that talent alone isn't enough. Hell, even talent in abundance loses more than it wins in big games. That's why they don't play the game on paper. Paper tigers fall all the time

I played for coach Wood later in his career. He was nothing like the Hackman character. All of 5'4". He headed the Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter at the school. If you cursed on the court, you sat. While we did have a ball control offense we ran whenever we had the opportunity, scoring 88 in our first game my last year (with no 3pt shot).

On another note when I was in 5th grade we moved from Muncie to a town named New Ross Indiana. Being a young kid we all would play in town. Somehow one day some of us ended up looking in a barn close to our homes. To our surprise the bus they used in the movie was just chilling in there lol. We loved it and didn’t touch it but looked at it forever. Looking back this was around 1989 so it was just two or three years after the movie came out. Wonder where it is now?

The movie coach was (loosely) based on Bobby knight. Some similarities to the movie coach and coach Knight are 1) Emphasis on defense 2) At least 4 passes before taking a good shot 4) confrontational interaction with referees 5) In trouble for getting too physical with a player 6) Players (with few exceptions) love him

Other notes not mentioned. Radio announcer Hilliard Gates who called the 1954 title game on radio actually reprises his role for the movie as well. Hilliard was a legendary sportscaster in Northern Indiana, Fort Wayne specifically (where I live) and has a building named after him on Purdue-Fort Wayne's campus where the basketball team commonly plays known as the "Hilliard Gates Sports Center" The Public Address Announcer in the movie is actually "The Golden Voice" known as Tom Carnegie who, yes was the voice of the IHSAA State Tournament for MANY years on public address... He is more commonly known for being the Public Address Staple for over 50 years at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the "500" While sections of the movie are indeed "stretched" for Hollywood story telling, in general the movie serves as a love letter of sorts to Indiana basketball, and the stories that all go in hand with it and is almost "required reading" in late February or early March as the modern version of the state tournament is held.

Actually, the smallest school to win a state championship in Indiana is not Milan. Milan is the smallest in the current format, but the state tournament used to be an invitational tournament in the early days. The smallest school to win a state championship therefore belongs to Wingate in 1913 and 1914. The school does not exist anymore. The population of Wingate in 1910 was 446; today it is 261.

I feel like you really missed the mark with this video and I wanted to try and explain. Now to be fair this is the first movie review video of yours I’ve watched. So I’m guessing you have a certain style that’s kind of raw and testing to the plots. That said being from Indiana and being blessed with being my high schools all time leading scorer upon graduation in 96 I can tell you without question your missing the entire point of the movie. What it did was capture the spirit of Indiana basketball perfectly. It might seem insignificant to you but it’s not to the thousands upon thousands that have experienced this from the thousands of coaches, players, player parents and family, and every other example someone could give of being involved with the game there. It spans generations and it’s not overstated. With the change to class basketball in 97 you can’t deny things changed but trust me not much. Yes basketball even in Indiana is just a game and as big as it is it’s still just one example of the many things Indiana is proud of. I dare say some things on that list are way more important. But I couldn’t ignore this and not make a comment. From the players race, which why would it matter one way or another, to holding the ball four minutes, which was a accepted and frequently used tactic for most teams during those years, you just missed the mark completely and I would expect a person giving reviews on movie’s authenticity to be able to realize that a movie can have many elements that aren’t exactly true to life yet still capture the exact spirit and emotions that really are what is important. I’m going to watch more of your videos and subscribe. This one was just personal. By the way. My record only held 15 years :). I’m just one of those thousands I mentioned.

One thing I don't understand is why "ball control" isn't being used more often these days. I officiate High School basketball where there is no shot clock (5 and 3 seconds still exist). I would see teams get a sizable +10pt lead and still attack the basket, sometime squandering that lead. If I were coaching, I'd have the players sit at the top of the key and just swing the ball. Sure it's boring but it's still a winning strategy like in NFL where you wait until 5 secs before snapping the ball to eat up that time.

SEE RANK David Anspaugh is from Decatur, IN which is my home zip code (I lived out in the country not in town). What is interesting is that Milan used the "Ball Control Offense". My grandpa played in a famous/infamous game in this area known as the "stall game" that was in either 54 or 55. The previous game my grandpa scored quite a bit (30+) and the team (Pleasant Mills Spartans) scored I believe 86 or so points. Their opponent of the stall game, the Berne Bears, (where my grandma had went to school before having to move) decided that wasn't going to happen. So they played stall ball for basically the entire game. Pleasant Mills ended up winning 5 to 4 over Berne. My grandpa scored 3 of the 5 points. It would have probably ended up a tie if my grandpa hadn't done some "gamesmanship" (to put it nicely). He made one of the opponents commit a lane violation (using a dirty tactic and I'll leave it at that LOL) to wipe out the game tying free throw. Grandpa ended up being the all time leading scorer in school history. That will never change as Pleasant Mills consolidated with my alma mater Adams Central. Grandpa is still going strong and maybe after all the COVID is done, Adams Central and South Adams (Berne consolidated into South Adams) could play a tribute game with jerseys from Pleasant Mills and Berne. Also if any living players from that game are around, they can be honored at half time.

I interviewed Marvin Wood in 1995 and he said the only really accurate part of the movie was the final Game winning shot. There was no drunken assistant coach and there was no campaign in the community to have him fired. And Wood said he coached basketball for like 30 years and he got a total of two or three technical fouls (one was the result of a mistake filling out the scorebook) unlike Gene Hackman who got dozens of technicals.

The Hoosiers story is fiction, and was never presented as something else. The Milan game was not won at the buzzer, there were about three second left. Only one Indiana High School boys championship game was ever won at the buzzer. That happened when Jeff Poisel hit a long shot at the end of the second overtime for a Ben Davis championship. The only photo taken of that winning shot is hanging in permanent display in the Indiana basketball Hall of Fame, at the top of the ramp leading to the lower floor. I took that photo.

One of you basketball scholars should look up the 1956 Larado Martin, high school boys team out of Laredo Tx. The State's 1956 champs who were greatly undersize, Mexican American kids , from a boarder town who competed in Texas largest boys division 4A , playing against teams from Houston and Dallas's largest schools. Unbelievable story, no one knows about.

@@steviesevieria1868 Man, l learned about this 1956 team back when l was coached by Coach Batey in the early 80's. He never talked about it, but others would bring it up. I never once thought about if there were black players playing on the other teams. Our teams were mixed, never a problem, we all revered Coach Batey. I looked it up and as far as l can tell , black players had there own high school league up until 1960s. If you read some of the articles about the 56 game ,it makes a point of the Mexican kids that were on the team . When you asked me that ,l was embarrassed that it had never crossed my mind. If you like Hoosier like stories, check out the book, One Shot At Forever, by SI writer, Chris Ballard. It's about the 1971 Macon High School baseball team, the Ironmen. Preposterous that a movie or series hasn't been done. Last I knew, Jon Hamm had purchased the rights.

This is a well made movie with a great story. But one thing that bothers me in basketball movies is showing a player taking a shot and then they cut to a close up of the ball going through the hoop, and it's obvious that somebody up on a ladder dropped the ball in or stood under the basket and tossed the ball up and in. I really hate that!!

Excellent. One aspect not covered here: why did the screenwriter stray so much from the truth? Wouldn't a movie with Milan beating Oscar Robertson be kinda interesting? And why call them South Bend Central (a real school) when the Muncie Central Bearcats are one of the most legendary high school basketball teams in American history? Why so much fiction when the truth is so much more thrilling?

The movie skipped the two semi-state games and the semi-final. I think it’s a matter of how much you can put in to the movie.
4 жыл бұрын
"...But it’s probably also not fair to assume that “Hoosiers” represents all Hoosiers. Oscar Robertson’s Attucks teams weren’t underdogs on the court but faced undeniable racism. Attucks’ title in 1955 came just 14 years after the Indiana High School Athletic Association first allowed black schools as members. Plump remembers walking with his teammates in Downtown Indianapolis before Milan’s game against Attucks in 1954 and hearing people shout, “Beat those (expletive)!” Which they did.
