Hoosiers is a 1986 sports film about a small-town Indiana high school basketball team that wins the state championship. The story is set during 1951/1952, when all high schools in Indiana, regardless of size, competed in one state championship tournament. It is loosely based on the Milan High School team that won the 1954 state championship.

The entire film is about evolution, change and comebacks. The earlier version of Coach Dale in the film would have benched Jimmy for wanting to change the play; now, in the final, crucial moments, he lets his star player (and, really, all the players) overrule him and accepts it without protest. The final step in his evolution, and the final step in his -- and everyone's -- comeback.

And as good as the movie is, if the suits running the studio had allowed them to keep the deleted scenes it would have been even better. The ones explaining Buddy's sudden reappearance, fleshing out the relationship between Hackman and Hersey, the interaction of the coach with his friend's (Cletus)family, etc. All gone just so the movie would be twenty or thirty minutes shorter.

My favorite sports flick of all time. Dale driving in across the farmlands with that steaming cup of coffee before dawn, that scene just makes me want to be there in that time. When he walks into the school everything is so clean and shiny, things like that mattered back then. Jimmy's speech at the meeting to decide Dales fate always chokes me up. Hackman was great, Hopper was great, the soundtrack was sublime and the scenes were visually beautiful. I never get tired of watching this movie, it's a treasure, I'm sure most of you agree.

I'm wondering now, having just watched this again, if the intent of the coach in designing the original play was to test Chitwood, to see how he'd react, and to inspire in him a desire to be the gamer. I only wonder this now because it almost looked like he was waiting for Chitwood to say that. First time I noticed that...hmmm...I guess we'll never know unless we ask the writers of Gene Hackman!

As a former coach, my favorite part of that scene is when notorious control freak Norman Dale releases the reins and lets the kids dictate the last shot. Coaches often think players asserting themselves and challenging the coach is a bad thing. It is the best thing. The game is not about the coaches.

Players challenging the coach is the best thing? What a knucklehead. I can’t imagine a single high school, college, or pro coach agreeing with you, ESPECIALLY when a player challenges them in the middle of a game. Hollywood threw in that scene for dramatic effect. Pure fantasy.
@urbananalrapist
@urbananalrapist 2 жыл бұрын
If you rewatch the movie a few times, you'll realize Coach Dale was never really a control freak. He might have given that impression during the first game by forcing his player to pass 4 times before a shot, and benching Rade when Rade ignored his instruction. But his intention was never about control nor about a 4-pass-before-shot offense. It was always about building up his players' skills, abilities, and confidence, and getting them to play as a disciplined 5-man team. By asking his players to pass 4 times before a shot and sticking with that offense for the first game, he was testing whether they could handle that assignment and stick with it, even when it didn't seem like it was working. Rade failed that test and was benched, even though he scored a few times. At the same time he was building up his players, he was also building up his coaching staff's abilities and confidence too. Think about it this way: if Coach Dale was such a control freak, why would he ever intentionally get kicked out of a game and let Shooter (who was temporarily off the bottle) finish coaching the game for them? Dale saw Shooter's knowledge and abilities as a plus, and the need to repair Shooter's relationship with his son as necessary. So the last play wasn't about Coach Dale giving up control. Rather, it was because his players developed enough along the season to be trusted to make that last play themselves, and Coach Dale recognized it.

Just a fantastic, heartwarming film. The best sports movie ever made. The acting of Barbara Hershey, Dennis Hopper and Gene Hackman carries the day. It is rare that Gene Hackman is outshone in a film, but Dennis Hoppers performance as Shooter is Academy Award worthy. The man was ripped blind of his statuette by whatever clueless wonders were responsible. His scene with his son in the Hospital is a study of complete absolution. When he said, "About the other njght," his boy immediately answers, "No that don't matter dad. You're going to get better." It could squeeze tears from a granite stone. A beautiful tale of redemption and second chances.

Grew up in Indiana and remember putting a sheet over the tiny TV in my bedroom with the sound turned off so I could watch the IHSAA basketball games past my bedtime. Everyone's parents drank and smoked and were constantly having dinner parties, bridge clubs and friends over. It was a great life. However we can make this happen again will be worth it.

When I first saw the movie and Dennis Hopper's name appeared, I thought, Ow wow, he's going to play something weird/edgy. In fact, in the previous/same year as "Hoosiers", he appeared in "Blue Velvet" ("Now it's dark!!!"), "Texas Chainsaw Massacre II", "Straight to Hell", and "Riders of the Storm". So I guess he's in this film for "a rest"!

I went to LEBANON High School in the mid 70's. Steve and Brian Walker were the go to player's on the LEBANON Tiger's. Lebanon is also the home of the Greatest pure shooter in Indiana High School basketball history "Rick Mount" The Walker Brothers were a one two punch. The Coach was Jim Rosinstihl. A under study of Tony Hinkle of Butler. Jim played for Tony in college. The Tiger's went to Semi State a couple of times. But never won the big one. Both Brothers went on to play at Purdue. But faded away into Indiana High School basketball Histroy. Those were some great days indeed! Go! Tigers! Shawn

As a coach I put a 2nd string shooter in close to the end of the game. He asked me, "What do you want me to do coach?" I told him "Play the game". The shooter drained a couple of three pointers and we won by 5 points. A Coach has never won a game.

I think this scene makes me as well as others so emotional because that shot made a town and made people’s lives worthwhile. If you’re from a small town you’ll understand what I mean by that. It’s hard to comprehend how simple life is in a small town and unfortunately those people never get to see the real world for what it is. Basketball and hard work is their way of life. That shot was for all of the small Midwestern towns that never got the chance to be known all across the country. That shot was for the people who lived their entire lives in one little town with one stop light. That shot was for you and me, it brings hope and the chance of prosperity. Jimmy Chitwood did that for us, he made it and that lives within all of us, someday we hope we can make it.

It's so weird to me, coming across the movie Hoosiers the other day and this pivotal scene in the movie. Did you know the kids in the stands and everyone cheering as extras is an actual High School Class. MY OWN! And following the filming, My School went on to win the actual State championship. Bishop Chatard High School vs Broad Ripple High School. We BCHS WON! Gene Hackmen (who was actually raised for a time Hoosier (Indiana) Resident) stayed to watch the game. All those faces are my classmates, Class of 1986. Sadly, many of them are gone now. But they will live on forever in this film as well as actual moment of time. A time which though was filled with tragedy and loss. Nevertheless, It was the happiest time of my life. A age of discovery of who I was to become. The Movie Hoosiers BEAUTIFULLY capture another thing. The State of Indiana's obsession for Basketball, which part of me also loves as a Hoosier.

This is the movie that made me want to play basketball growing up. Kobe Bryant might be my favorite basketball player, but Jimmy Chitwood has my basketball line ever, “I’ll make it”. I know the generations now like Coach Carter or Glory Road and both are good films, but this one movie paints basketball for what the game truly is about. Shooting, that’s the first thing we all learn, fundamentals explain our ball handling and passing, and defense how do we stop the opponent from scoring. This is the first true sports movie of David vs Goliath. And btw, the soundtrack of this whole movie has the best sports soundtrack movie all sports movies I’ve heard. Lastly, the ending is great. It summarizes everything in the movie. Basketball, farming, and school. Not better way to end the movie with the picture of the state champions in Indiana of the 1952-1953 basketball team and head coach Norman Dale say the best quote in basketball at the very end of the movie and tell his players, he loves them. Hands down the best basketball film I have ever been introduced to by my father!!

At 54, I was able to watch this movie in 86 when it came out, and God knows how many times since. I would guess that many who love this movie are from a small town, as am I. When you beat a much bigger school, there just aren't words to express the feeling you get. This final scene does just that, with only three words that say it all, I'll make it. The music and crowd reaction after fills that emotion every time. It brings a tear, every time. And a smile of that memory as fresh as if it was yesterday. EVERY TIME.
