HOOSIERS - State Championship pregame words & prayer

Hoosiers is a 1986 sports film about a small-town Indiana high school basketball team that wins the state championship. The story is set during 1951/1952, when all high schools in Indiana, regardless of size, competed in one state championship tournament. It is loosely based on the Milan High School team that won the 1954 state championship.

Last movie I saw with my dad the weekend before he died, over 30 years ago. Still get choked up on the opening sequence. Even more so that this movie takes place in Indiana. Iowa, Illinois, Indiana all have that same look and feel when you get outside the major cities.

Such a brilliant achievement to recreate that nostalgic 1950’s Indiana aura throughout this film right from the opening scene where coach slowly drives his way in early Fall into the small town of Hickory through to the final scene with his narrating while showing the sun setting out on the fields. The lush and beautiful scenery of Indiana seems almost as poignant as the epic basketball story. The cinematography is truly breathtaking. And the soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith just deepens this visual experience even more. A great sports films that captures that spirit of youth…and maybe, in some small way reminds a number of us elders out here of our own high school glory days…our wonder years….

At 0:35 you see a cameo by Tom Carnegie who actually did work the public address for the IHSAA title game for many years. Tom more famous for being the famous "Golden Voice" for so many years at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the 500. Also, the radio announcer in the movie is that of Hilliard Gates, the actual radio announcer that called the Milan/Muncie Central game and is probably the most famous sports voice in the state of Indiana.

When I saw the film in the theater in 1987 I recognized the voice of Tom Carnegie. I didn’t know at the time he did the PA for the IHSAA but knew he was the Track Announcer at IMS.

Every time I watch this scene I get chills and tears. A true David & Goliath moment. I pray my Irish(David) can defeat the Giant(Alabama). This is one of the best scenes in the movie, all very real for anyone who’s ever been in a locker room before the big game ( I ) it’s incredible to go out on the floor in front of a full house of yelling fans. Never forget it. Ask the 77 Epping boys of north dakota, classic David vs Goliath. Most watched championship ever .

Great acting from the preacher as He preaches..."with God of Heaven there is one"..."to deliver with, a, great multitude, or a small company(paraphrasing) ...if you watch right after that his eyes blink which signifies he knows he is dealing with great odds. Understandable, but if they insisted going completely accurate, they would have had the blue paint on the floor removed, and different goal posts, along with the scoreboards. But as much of a stickler I have always been for details, I never minded it much with this movie. My parents almost took me to the filming of that final game. It was so icy and dangerous that night it would have been a rough trip from New Castle to Indy. I guess it's sentimental to me.

One thing they did mess up on. During this time of the Indiana State Tournament, it was incredibly efficient. So efficient that one of the early rules was to not have the National Anthem played during any of the final games. Their were no big bands, no mascots, nothing but just pure basketball
