The Constellation was built from November 17 1954 to Jan 30 1975.
The debut 82 has a very decorative wide aluminum ring festooned
All three versions were in production from 1954 to 1957.
The second series began in 1958 with the gold coloured Model 86 (which later in its run became Porcelain Blue), followed by successive coloured models, thus:
Model 87 - 1959 - Garland Green with electric hose On/Off feature (discussed here many times - do an archives search for this singular model) Matches the Model 66 Convertible.
Model 88 - 1960 - 'Pank' officially known as Fawn - matches the Model 67 Convertible.
Model 434 - 1961 - Canton Red and Pearl White - matches Model 574 promo Convertible.
Model 444 - Bittersweet orange - matches Model 34 Convertible Special.
Model 454 - Nassau Blue - matches Model 36 Convertible Special.
Model 843 - Autumn Gold & Seal Griege - This is the tilted model - matches Model 1060 Convertible.
after 1971 base colour changes to Medium Taupe.
Model 858 - Pumpkin & Seal Griege - matches Model 1120 DAM.
after 1971 base colour is Medium Taupe and in 1974 top colour is Poppy Red.
The last two models, 843 & 858 were both in production until January 30 1975
Then, around 2006 came the 'Series Three' Maytag Satellite in Stainless Steel which was brought over to North America via China as the Hoover Constellation S3345 in SS & Black trims & clear hose or painted shimmering Opalescent White with Gray trims & a shorter gray hose. Around 2007/08 these were both sold in Canada at Home Hardware stores and others for a short time until late 2008 when Internet Mail Order Closeout became the only way to get one. The price gradually plummeted from a high of $299 to $149, to $99 on the Hoover Website when I ordered mine. On a road trip in 2009 as Hoover Outlets were closing I saw some in stores marked down to US$75.

Seeing the words TurboPower on that Hoover Maytag is just so nostalgic. That was a nice line of hoover cleaners, black and gold on thrm always looked nice.

Hoover did a great job remaking the Constellation. Keeping the old design with some modern asthenic . I wish it came with an electric power tho. Definitely want a Constellation in my collection. Looks very fun to use!

I've never used a canister with a turbo brush; I'd think that with enough suction, it would be good enough. I wouldn't want a really aggressive one like the ones on Dysons; I've seen the way they destroy carpets.

Having no swivel where the hose meets the canister (they had gotten rid of it by the time my parent's was made in 1959) shouldn't really be a problem with the whole thing on a cushion of air, but having no twist relief at either end was a pain; it looks as if they added it on the Maytag version. I would miss the blower port though; Maytag should at least have included a baffle to allow a connection for blower use. I've noticed that even some shop vacs don't have them now, probably to increase air flow and reduce noise.

I would imagine most people didn't use the blower port....I never used mine. Yes, there is twist relief on the end of the hose for the retro Connie. Better bag, better seal, multiple filters..... they really thought this retro Connie through.

My great grandmother had one (must have been a Model 84) that my sister and I were just *fascinated* by as kids. I just found a beat up Model 858 at a thrift store for $10, still works! It's missing the hose, any recommendations for a replacement? Absolutely loved the videos, wonderful to see someone as passionate about these as you are.

I would love to have one of the Maytag vacs but definitely need the power head My house has 3000 square feet of carpet and a turbo head is going to do it for me.

I so wish they had made the newer one longer as I'd love to have one for it's uniqueness. Not seeing them on Ebay when ever I look. This one a decent vacuum unlike the Revolve that was similar to the GE Rolleasy.

As I've said may times, they took all the faults of the old Connies and made this one their tour de force. I have three older ones all in the orange finish(pumpkin) and this retro Connie(mine is the painted one), does everything better. Still no PN and you LEARN how to use it so that you're not blowing dirt/dust under things. Horse hair bristles on the attachments. I like the floor brush so much I bought a spare and/or use it with my tank Electrolux's. Hard sell to the millennial crowd when it came out with no PN. I love my retro Connie, but question its efficacy at the time and the market place. I guess we should be thankful it was made at all......... The round upholstery brush is a no go.....the suction is so great that it collapses the center of the brush fibers so that they block any dirt/lint from coming in. I just use one of my Electrolux brushes for that. You could power down the suction on the handle with the slider, but you don't have to do that with an Electrolux brush.....just a bad Hoover design.
