My vote for Trump was my first vote FOR a presidential candidate. Every other vote was against the Democrat. I held my nose for Papa and Baby Bush twice each. Held my nose for McCain and Romney as well. I was kinda for Dole, but I knew he had no chance.

I see Trump's business background, particularly in branding and marketing, as what enabled him to smash his competitors in the primaries. He assessed the majority issues that consumers (voters) cared about, positioned himself around those issues, and went to market (campaigned) on them. His competitors opted to instead take moderate, traditional Republican views that were simply out of touch with what voters cared about. They tried to the "broad net" approach that didn't speak to any target groups. This is why many businesses or products fail. They don't take a customer-centric approach and just come up with products/services that they think consumers want, rather than truly empathizing with the buyer and knowing their motivations and wants. Take illegal immigration - Trump knew this was a major issue for voters and went all in on it. No apologies, no half-measures. Further, the liberal media likes to say that Trump has "taken over" the Republican party, or that he has some type of stranglehold over it. I disagree. If anything, he reflects what Republican and conservative voters now want. The neo-cons and old school Republicans of the 80s, 90s, and 00s are gone. The Trump era is in. And I see that as a good thing.

VDH seems like a combination preacher/philosopher. I think he has some kind of faith in God in some way; although he does not actively promote Christianity. I normally support academics who have a strong understanding of the Bible, or at least respect for it, and I know at least he's got the second of those qualities.

I truly believe it is because the IDW are moderate liberals. They appear more right-leaning because they balk at the trend the left wing is taking. They would find much objectionable about VDH. The IDW's primary goal is to salvage the current institutions, not an overthrow or radical change to the right. Listen to their political opinions, they are identical to late 90s Democrats. The only conservative strain is questioning of critical theory, there is no real conservatism in them.

I was definitely prepared to hate this guy - but I don’t. He’s thoughtful and his depth of historical knowledge applied to our current circumstances is impressive. But he also ignores the fact that corporate America especially the GOP used China to destroy US labor unions. Immigration too - a corporatist move against American labor. He thinks the US trade deficit is because America was ‘gracious’ to the rest of the world. Not true - it was used to destroy American organized labor. And, this is no knock against him - but he doesn’t understand race (he ignores the fact that it has been a lingua franca going back to the signing of the constitution). He seems to believe liberals invented identity politics - they didn’t. Go back to the KKK, the white citizens councils, Jim Crow, etc. many Americans - including himself - grew up in an era of strict racial discrimination and exclusion. And that’s really his Achilles heel - he really thinks America is a ‘western’ nation ideologically. It isn’t - not to say classical philosophy is not a contributing ideology, but it’s not a controlling one. He’s limited to European history (as told by Europeans) -- and at the end of the day that’s why trump will fail. Both Hanson and Trump are living in a fantasy world that does not accurately depict what’s going on globally. They think that by asserting a western narrative they can bend reality to heir perspective. That’s comforting, but at the end of the day not gonna be effective....Hitler found this out the hard way and it was such a rude awakening he preferred death to truth. He also has sympathy for the devil. He pretends as if trump is unfairly maligned - when trump himself is one of the worst and most vulgar bullies America has ever seen. You get back what you put out there - and trump has shown his ass, time and time again.
