Bari Weiss began her career as a mainstream media prodigy, landing coveted positions at the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times in her early twenties. In 2020, she famously resigned from the Times when conditions there became intolerable for her, famously writing in a public resignation letter that “Twitter is not on the masthead of The New York Times. But Twitter has become its ultimate editor.” Now Weiss is the publisher of Common Sense, her wildly popular Substack newsletter, and the host of the Honestly with Bari Weiss podcast. Her ambition is nothing short of becoming a 21st-century one-woman media company, and based on what she reveals in this interview, she is well on her way to achieving that goal.

I heard it said once, and I completely agree, is that Wokism is a religion of all sin, and no redemption. That's a very sad religion.

'Wokism' is simply taboo spread across a wider spectrum. There have always been things one could and couldn't say. The content has changed over time. The right-wing self-victimization culture doesn't change any of this.

As always Peter, enjoyed this episode of Uncommon Knowledge. Even though I'm politically polar opposite of Ms Weiss, I enjoyed what she had to say and what she is doing. So much so that I'm subscribing to her publication and podcast. Ms Weiss, you are ray of light in an increasingly dark society. Keep the faith and continue fighting the good fight!

I'm a rock-ribbed conservative, and I absolutely adore Weiss's Substack. Even when I disagree, it's always edifying, thoughtful, and beautifully written. I often despair about the state of the modern left in America, so it's great to see such sense-making from a liberal.

Great interview. I can tell she is very young, some of her comments showcase this, but good for her. If she keeps looking for truth and not ideology, she'll figure out that a lot of things have already been figured out and simply discarded or forgotten because they were politically inconvenient at the time.

I agree at 73. Bari is incisive, cogent and it seems very honest and honed in oratory which belies her age somewhat but i guess coming from a fine Jewish background with a lovely warm relationship with her Father, and the 'heat of the kitchen' of New York and Washington etc, she surely has been well-fashioned to report her insights and struggles. Dear Peter, he is my favourite interviewer, presenter and moderator - charming, modest, wise, honest, self-correcting, and a wonderfully talented gentleman. An Australian.

I can disagree with Bari on some of her views, but I can respect her willingness to engage in freedom for people to speak their views even if we disagree - effective change comes from discussion/debate, you try to convince me and I try to convince you and maybe from that we come to a middle-ground we can live together with. The new woke radical left doesn't want that - they want to shut you up and coerce/force you into accepting their view, if you don't agree they will cancel you, get you fired, and even go on tv implying you should be arrested or even put to death for disagreeing with them. Those are the traits of pretty much every authoritarian/dictatorial regimes in history.

Learning that Niall Ferguson will be at the University of Austin and other professors slammed by U of Oregon is wonderful. University of Austin -- will have great people -- hmmm. yes, but, the problem with "universities" is that they do not keep great people -- that's because great people are busy doing all kinds of great things -- no offense, but great people don't sit around pontificating the way university profs do. The universities seem to be filled with many professors who are otherwise useless -- with the notable exception of engineering and science schools where there is a blend of "theory" and "practice." Universities gradually fill up with liberals who are otherwise useless, they have no jobs in industry -- so, when the kitchen gets hot, the profs who can make a living in the real world simply leave the university and its politics -- it's an evaporation process that leaves a residue behind. Not sure how U of Austin could avoid this phenomenon, but happy to see someone try.
