Recorded in Florence, Italy, on October 19, 2022
With his many varied interests in technology, politics, and culture, Peter Thiel has often been described as a Renaissance man. So perhaps it was only fitting that we traveled to Florence, Italy-where the Renaissance originated and thrived for hundreds of years-to speak with him. In this wide-ranging interview, we cover several topics, including his support for candidates across the country who are running as outsiders, why technology has not fulfilled many of its early promises, and why California is still America’s incubator for ideas and growth.

My opinion on why the West stagnated: - Lost industry to foreign nations, which had hitherto fed off and nourished scientific and engineering advances, and provided a real reward for studying engineering and working blue collar jobs. - Overabundance of artificially cheap goods, care of zero wage foreign offshored industry, turning people into consumers rather than creators. - Government growing in size and influence, with regulation growing endlessly blocking technological advancement by default. - Socialist government policies, to offset the downtrodden former blue collar demographic, creating a permanent underclass and unaccountable elite, creating vast imbalances and giving the government more excuses to expand and crush entrepreneurship in the process.

Great to hear Carroll Quigley quoted at 22:45 by none other than Peter Theil, on the Hoover Institutes podcast! I can see the quote caught our good old presidential speech writer Peter Robinson by surprise when tied into the discussion of the California partisan divide. Quigleys sober look at American history, is of great concern to the foundational beliefs of modern American history as it is taught in public schools. If you want to further your knowledge in regards to American history, Hoover Institute actually produced a great fellow by the name of Antony Sutton, who wrote incredible works, greatly quoting Quigley throughout, that I suggest reading as soon as possible. He is a more condensed understanding of Quigley's 1000 page books such as Tragedy and Hope, focusing more on our foundational understanding of the architects who designed and profited from the second world war.

It's an interesting idea I haven't heard before that everyone lived under the fear of nuclear annihilation for so long that now we are afraid to create new technologies. I suppose one counter argument to that, that just occurred to me would be the biolabs that are still creating new diseases. That's a pretty obvious technology that can easily be used as a weapon that we are still progressing.

one interesting thing to me is its hard to tell exactly the limits of the application of a technology, and which ones will sort of run into a physical limitation versus which techs are poised for a leap in sophistication. batterys are a recent example, they have enabled smaller and smaller tech devices, which enabled entirely new products, etc. The generational impact issue is completely related to high housing prices in desirable locations. of course if young generation cant afford property, they cant/wont build the same wealth as their parents (unless they inherit it).

Great to see this vid get so many views and deserves many more likes. Those (Like Henry Rowen) who decided that somehow China will become a Democracy (by 2015 :):) are either feeling a bit daft or pleased their bs lasted another 25 years. Personally, I feel it's the latter. I don't think they were that thick. I don't remember seeing reports that China said anything like that would happen. We thought this would happen and maybe that that too.. I don't think so. It was a fifty year plan, since Nixon & Co.

We were promised flying cars, what we got were ultra cheap ultra safe flights from NY to LA that literally anyone could afford. We got open heart surgery on an out-patient basis. We got bigger, quieter, safer, cleaner homes. We got the internet, infinite information the ability to communicate with anyone anytime anywhere. Flying cars exist, they are called helicoptors, and the are very expensive to maintain because when you put something in the air, the oversight requirements go up 100x. And what is the advantage of being in the air?

If capitalism is an expression of free will and the ability to navigate between Armageddon and the Antichrist, then which systems of financial expression are going to lead one way or another? If all companies become public and are owned by one corporation you get one anticompetitive regime. If all companies are private and ownership is diverse you have the risk of a rogue innovator. That said, I know which one has more counterbalances.

Who says we have to “beat” China or they’ll “beat” us ? The current and future success of everyone now depends on interdependent relationships that benefit all parties. My iPhone is designed here but made there; we need them to buy our T bonds and they need the US dollar, AND our economy which backs it, to stay viable. Robinson’s whole premise here is obsolete and zero-sum thinking that can only end in failure given the globalized tech-empowered world we have NOW, which isn’t going away, no matter what your political attitude.
