Yep it was more aimed at the F1 box in the Ferrari. Matt Farah is the one I remember hearing about the Aston being so bad he spent tens of thousands to get it to be a manual. Ended up finding out underneath it’s a H pattern box with a robot shifting it. But let’s be honest the v12 is two Taurus V6s welded together and today AM has a AMG German biturbo so officially complaining about it being bad at shifting is just funny. Because no one daily’s a car that was one of.. a few thousand made?

I was the engineer for Aston who was tasked with fixing the flappy paddle issues and we did. Reach out to me Hoovie if you want to know more. I seem to remember Clarkson's big issue was with 'low speed' maneuverability. Such as navigating parking lots, driving on inclines, etc. I don't think he really had any problem with it on a track, or just driving on a highway...
@mmonkeyman14032 жыл бұрын
If you’ve ever driven an early paddle shift car, you know exactly what he was referring to. The early cars couldn’t manage low speed at all when auto was turned on, and it’s even harder to do it with auto off.
@docontra49212 жыл бұрын
Very much this! He never really complained _that much_ about these issues on Ferraris of the time, but he saw the Aston as a Grand Tourer/daily driver, and low speed driveability matters there.

on the streets yes. On the track it was the downshifts mostly. A manual you can just ram into 2nd gear and floor it, with the paddles you have to walk it all the way down.
@aaryeshg.65262 жыл бұрын
The way it uses the clutch is also clunky. You can't really adjust the aggressiveness of the clutch action on the fly (unlike a manual transmission). Also if you compare it with same sequential transmissions in racecars (WRC, GT1, GT3....), it's slower to shift. Ferrari managed to do it better (still clunky in automatic mode though).

Aston were always users of hand-me-downs; parts-bin specials. Maybe not so much in the 1950s, or perhaps even the 60s, but when the oil crises hit and Aston went into their 70s dry spell, they were using all sorts of components from major suppliers. From their point of view it made a lot of sense - the bought-in components were properly engineered and manufactured, cheap because of volume, and most likely with a budget that exceeded Aston's budget for the engine.

The reason why Clarkson is having a go on it, is when the car was new and you buy at that high price point. You dont expect it to be that slow at gear shifting. As a car review, have a drive in a new car. Of course you have to say whats wrong. Because the gear shift on that car is really slow.

Exactly. Clarksons Point was at this price point there was multiple vehicles that did the same thing better. At the same if not better price.

I've got a 2017 GTI with a dual clutch. If I ask it to reverse up a steep hill it shits a brick. Super jerky, the time between the brake being released and the clutch engaging isn't consistent, etc. If you're in a tight spot it's really unnerving. Even sketchier if you're ok gravel or another loose surface. Id rather be in a manual in that situation, I'm not an amazing stick driver but I can slip a clutch properly in reverse
@stuartstogdill24062 жыл бұрын
The VW dual clutch is one of the best on the market… you clearly can’t drive for shit.
@grantkendrick2772 жыл бұрын
@@stuartstogdill2406 yes it is and you've clearly never been in a dual clutch reversing from a stop on a steep hill. Car just freaks out. Dual clutches don't like slipping the clutch so if you're not ready to actually give it some gas it grabs and releases. If you're on gravel attempting to reverse up the hill and you've gotta give it gas you're going to spin. In literally every other scenario the transmission is absolutely fantastic

Jeremy Clarkson absolutely hates all "Flappy Paddle Gear Boxes" with a passion. He hated the gearbox on this Aston Martin because he basically thought adding the gearbox type to this iconic British car brand was "Sacrilege". I think it was a generational thing, the flappy paddle gear box in road legal sports cars was "relatively new" back then and we have had 20+ years to get used to them.
@SkodaYetiFan2 жыл бұрын
Not really a generational thing. All the early iterations of the flappy paddle gearbox (Lambo E gear, Ferrari F1, BMW SMG and whatever nonesence this Aston uses) were garbage. They only got good around the late 2000s and became truly exceptional with the introduction of the double clutch technology in the 2010s.
@crazyfroggie65462 жыл бұрын
Plenty of Ferraris he's liked with flappy paddle shifters. A lot of the problem of cars of this era is the big jerk as the gearbox dips the clutch and shunts it back in again in the next gear. BMW M6 was like this as well, even shunts when driven gently. More aggressive than a conventional auto, but not as smooth to drive

As a long time valet, I’ve gotten to drive plenty of Aston’s, and I absolutely love these cars. As far as affordable Aston’s go, the older vantage, vanquish, Rapide, and DB9 are incredibly fantastic cars, especially for the price range you can find them at. I’d love to get my hands on one 😩 Every time I hear someone talk about a Lamborghini Murcielago, Ed’s voice saying “murse-see-el-ago” pops into my head

Before you replace all the ignition coils check for oil pooling around the spark plugs. The rubber seals around the PVC plumbing get tired and leak, sometimes causing oil to pool around the plugs and misfires. I would strongly recommend a little research in the Vanquish section on the AMOC forum as there's loads of great info in there that will help with your diagnostics and repair.

Clarkson had too much sway in the late 1990's and early 2000's. That one man's opinion buried many good cars and perhaps even brands. He seemed to have a particular dislike for all British car company's, many times without any real reason. He was far better as an entertainer once Top Gear went that way, than he ever was as a serious and impartial car journalist.

Aston Martin is supposed to be a gentleman's brand (an alternative to Jaguar perhaps). How are you supposed to act gentlemanly when your head is bobbing up and down like a yabo. Even when you drive normally and gentlemanly it's making you do that. I think that's where Jeremy Clarkson was coming from. (I would have to watch the episode again to be sure.)
